TURBINE-BLADING. l j
To all whom it may, concern;
Be it known thatI, JONATHAN Si `a citizen of the United States, and a .residenti of Pittsburgh, inthe county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, lhave made Aa new and useful Invention in Turbine-Blading, of which the following is a specification, v
This invention relates to elastic fluid tur'- bines and more .particularly to blades *.or, such turbines and has for an object the pro-1 duction ofv means forassembling turbine blades into blade segments. j A
In the drawings accompanying this application and forming a part thereof Figure 1 is a fragmental section, taken longitudif` nally of the turbine, of a rotating bladecarrying element in" connection lwith bladesl ymounted in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a section along theline A-A of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is ay fragmental planyiew of a rotating blade-carryingv element and blades secured theretov inaccordance with my invention; and, Fig. 4 is a :tragmental section, taken transversely of the turbine, of a stationary V blade-carrying element/wand blades secured thereto in accordance with my In carrying out `myk invention Icontem'n plate assembling' the turbine bladesinto seg-l mental blade rings and Igemploy a baseT strip for the blades which is formedin two separate parts. Each part of the compound base strip is provided withy notches'so arranged that the notches of one lpart co4 operate with the notches of the other to receive and tok secure vrin'place the bases o1'- roots of theblades. `I also provide inde-A pendent and separate-means Jfor positively and permanently locking each blade to .the
base strip and Afor permanently securingthe separate parts of the strip together.
Referring to the drawings a turbine blade-carrying element 6 is provided with a plurality of undercut and peripherally eX- tending blade-mounting lgrooves into` each of which a base strip 3 is adapted to beV secured by means of component wedges 9...y
Each base strip 8 is composed of twovsepa'- rate strips 10 which are curved `to conform" tothe curvature ot the mounting grooves adapted to receive them, and which arel provided, across one face, with a plurality of radially extending notches 13, of such 'shape and so spaced` that the notchesr of one strip jspecmaaon ofieaersraeentl PatntedJan, 23,1912.. Appliatin inea August e, 190s. 'serial m9441229/ 7 A' Y coperate with 'the adjacent notches vof vthe otherl strip in receiving and securing in place thebases-or roots of'blades14. {The base or. root 'of each blade is preferably swagedor'otherwi'se formed to fit the notches 13 and each'blladeis secured in place by aco,- operatingpair of adjacent notchesgfAv transverselyeXtending notch 18 is provided on the convex' face of the mounting .portion lor baseof each blade.` This notch, when the `base ofthe blade is in place in a notch 13,
registers with one of a plurality of cylindrical holes 16 1 which extend transversely throughl both of the strips 10 comprised in a base strip.Y Each hole 16 intersects one pair of cooperating notches 13 and. is adapted to `receive Vand hold in place a separate lockingplug or pin17, which is provided Afor eachk blade and which is adapted* tok cooperate with the notches 15 formed in the base of the blade and thereby positively lock it to the base strip. The plugs, to some eX- 18,-and to rivet` oyerth'e ends ofthe plugs located in the j counters'unk vholesfand to thereby'perman'ently secure thefserparate ele?l together and consequently ments ofthering the bladesto the base strip.;

binding'wire 20," of comma-shaped cross-seo?. tion, adapted toeXtend. Afterther bladesv arepermaneritly secured to the basestrips,
vvthe louter or `freel ends. are properly' spaced j ,and lrigidly locked in the proper relative L 'j positions by shearing and bending over`,be
tween adj acent blades, a longitudinally `ex#y v tending *rib 21 whichisfformed integrally with the ab'odyxportion of the wire 2O.` VThe v. shea-red and bent over'portions of thebindf ing wirefform separate spacing pieces which arer located between adjacent blades' andwhich positively hold, the bladesV intheii' yrelative:positions. The unsheared body portion of the'vwirebihds theouter or freeends j of the blades together.
Therbase strips are,for convenience, cut into Vsegmental sections which are securedy into the'blade-mountingL grooves 7 by means of the wedges 9'although any other suitabletent, secure the separate.I strips of eachl blades. jmounting ringtogether. Il, however, find, it
preferable tocountersink Y the outer 'ends of j a fewof tlie holes'flwin each strip as shownV se; i
, if ffy means may be employed. One of the component strips l0 of each compound base strip is provided with an inclined face 22, the inclination of which corresponds to the inclination of the undercut walls of the mounting grooves 7 The corresponding face of the other strip 10 is vertical; that is, is normal to the curved or peripheral faces of the strip.
In securing the base strips t'o the bladecarryingelement, each compound base strip is introduced into a groove 7 and so located within the groove that its inclined face contacts with, one of the undercut wallsv of the groove. The segments are then secured in place by the wedges9 which are preferably compound tapered wedges and which are introduced intothe space between the vertical face of the strip and the adjacent undercut wall of the groove. The compound tapered wedges are introduced into the groove in pairs and are so constructed that, when driven home, the two component wedgesv yof each pair conjointly form awedge-shaped key which effectively secures the blade ring into the blade-mounting groove and which is prevented by its shape and the shape of its component wedges, from being dislodged from the groove by centrifugal or any other dislodging force. The segmentsr of the base strips are so arranged that they may be inserted into the blademounting grooves end for end without destroying the spacing of the blades. A number of pairs of wedges are employed to seY cure each segment of the strip in the groove and are preferably so spaced within the grooves that the ends of' the wedges of one pair abut against the ends of the wedges of the next adjacent pair, and prevent any possibility of the wedges becoming displaced or loosened in the groove. The first and last pair of Wedges introduced into the groove are in some suit-able way prevented from moving longitudinally and are thereby permanently locked into the slot.
Throughout the specification and claims I have utilized the word blade in its broadest sense, that is, to include both the rotating and the stationary blades, vanes or buckets of a turbine, and I have also employed the term blade-carrying element in its broadest sense;that isto mean the rotating or stationary blade'or bucket carrying element of a turbine.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent 'the `best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means.
What I claim is:
l. In combination with a plurality of blades, a base strip for said blades and an independent locking pin extending transversely of said strip for securing one of said blades to said strip.
2. In combination with a plurality of blades, a compound base strip comprising separate strips for receiving the bases of the blades, and separate locking pieces extending transversely of said strip for securing each blade to said base strip.
3. In combinationv with a plurality of blades, a base strip therefor and pins extending transversely of said strip for independently locking said blades to said strip.
t. In combination with a blade-carrying element provided with a blade-mounting groove, a plurality of blades, a compound base strip therefor, comprising two separate strips provided with coperating notches adapted to receive the bases of the blades, and separate locking pieces extending transversely through said strips for securing each blade in place.
5. In combination with a plurality of blades comprised in a row, a compound base strip for said blades comprising separate strips each provided with radially extending and coperating notches for receiving the bases of said blades, and separate pieces extending transversely through each strip for securing said strips together and each of said blades in place.
6. In combination with a plurality of blades, a base strip for said blades and transversely extending locking pins, one for each blade, to secure said blade to the strip.
7. In combination with a plurality of blades, a base strip for said blades comprising two parallel members and locking pins, one for each blade, extending through the two members and engaging the blades.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 4th day of August, 1908.
