In the present construction I have materially simplified the mechanism by providing a boss or fulcrum support 6 at the side of the sliding cylinder-guide structure and herein, although not necessarily, at the side of the crosshead guide itself. This removes the usual obstruction, heretofore necessitated by the pivotal mounting of the rocker reverse lever, from the space beneath the cylinder head and about the stuffing box gland 7).
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 5, the piston at its upper end is provided with a tail-rod 9 (see Fig. which projects through the upper end of the cylinder and is slidably mounted in a sleeve or bushing 71, the latter having a tapered seat in the auxiliary cylinder head H. The bushing h is held to its seat, and the open end of the auxiliary head closed, by means of the plug it threaded into the top of the auxiliary head. In addition to the guidance which is afforded by the presence of the auxiliary head H serving to maintain the alinement of the piston and cross-head, the said auxiliary head also provides means for lubricating the tail-rod and thereby supplying lubricant to the engine cylinder. For this purpose there is formed in the auxiliary head a hollow chamber 7?, which, being separated from the tail-rod by the bushing it, forms an annular reservoir for the lubricant. This reservoir may be filled or replenished through the passage 7L3 arranged in an offset portion of the head and closed by the plug h Leading from the lower end of the reservoir is the lateral exit passage h (see Fig. 5') having connection through the valved passage h with an annular groove 72. located opposite a series of apertures in the bushing which serve to conduct the lubricant to the surface of the tail-rod. The passage 72, is normally closed by the ball valve it the latter, however, being raised by superior pressure from beneath to permit the oil to pass to the tail-rod. Pressure is admitted intermittently at each forward stroke of the piston from the head end of the cylinder to the pressure chamber its at the end of the tail-rod through a vertical passage (shown in dotted lines Figs. 1 and 5) formed in an offset portion 71- of the head and directly connecting the cylinder and the chamber it". When pressure is thus admitted it enters the groove 717 and lifts the ball valve it to the space allowed for ball movement by the adjusting screw It (Fig. 5). When the ball is lifted oil passes to and within the bushing 71- and by reciprocation of the tailrod is carried to the cylinder, oiling the parts gradually as required, By adjusting the screw h the lift of the ball and the feed of the oil may be regulated as desired.
While I have shown and described one form of my invention for the purpose of illustrating the parts thereof, it is to be understood that extensive departures may be made from the details of the described form without departing from the spirit thereof.
1. A channeling machine comprising, in combination, a channeling tool carrying member; a cylinder and piston to actuate the same; valve means to govern the cylinder; valve controlling connections bet-ween the tool carrying member and the valve means; a tail rod to guide the piston and tool; an auxiliary cylinder head to receive the tail rod; a lubricating chamber in the auxiliary head; and means to regulate the flow of lubricant to the tail rod, the whole being arranged to facilitate the guiding of the piston and tool and thereby to insure the proper control of the cylinder governing valve through its connections with the tool.
2. A channeling machine comprising in combination, a channeling tool carrying member; a cylinder and piston to actuate the same; an auxiliary cylinder head having a lubricant chamber; a tail rod extending into the auxiliary cylinder head and receiving lubricant from said chamber; and means to regulate the flow of lubricant to the tail rod.
3. A channeling machine comprising, in combination, a channeling tool carrying member; a cylinder and piston to actuate the same; a tail rod to guide the piston and tool carrying member; an auxiliary cylinder head; a bushing in said head in which the tail rod is mounted; a lubricant chamber around said bushing; lubricating passages leading from the chamber to the tail rod; an adjustable valve controlling said passages; and provision for controlling the operation of the auxiliary cylinder head and lubricating means, by movement of the channeling tool.
4. A channeling machine comprising, in combination, a channeling tool carrying member; an actuating cylinder and piston for the same; a lubricant reservoir associated with said cylinder; lubricant feeding passages leading from said reservoir; a pressure-governed check valve controlling said passages; and means to control the pressure governing said valve, said means being connected to and controlled by the piston in its movement.
5. A channeling machine comprising, in combination, a channeling tool carrying member; an actuating cylinder and piston for the same; a tail rod attached to the piston; an auxiliary cylinder head; a bushing therein in which the tail rod is mounted; a lubricant chamber around said bushing;
lubricating passages leading from the chain her to the tail rod; an adjustable ball valve controlling said passages; a pressure passage connecting the cylinder with the interior of said bushing; a cylinder valve controlling the pressure in the cylinder and the pressure Within said bushing; and operating neans for the cylinder valve controlled bymovement of the piston; said meansbeing offset from in front'ct the cylinder to leave'the head of the latter unobstructed.
6.
