Specification of Letters Patent.
NECK-YOKE CENTER.
Patented Jan. 16,1912} Application filed December 2'7, 1910. Serial No. 599,343.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, SAMPSON H. REN- VILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Power, in the county of Roberts and State of South Dakota, "have invented c.e r
tain new and useful Improvements in Neck- Yoke Centers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved neck yoke center and to this end it consists of the novel devices and com binations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims. I
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in rear elevation with some parts broken away and with some parts shown in sectlon; Flg. 2 1s a view 1n vertlcal sect on taken on the line 09 m of Flg. 1; Fig. 3 1s a detail view in horizontal section taken on.
the line m m of Fig. 1; and Fig. 1 is a detail view of a portion of the so-called clamping band. 1 r
The numeral 1 indicates the neck yoke and the numeral 2 the front end portion of a vehicle pole which latter is provided with the customary pole cap 8 having a segmental stop holder 4. The neck yoke center is adapted to be secured to the intermediate portion of the neck yoke l by means of a split clamping band 5, the free ends of which are brought together at the underside of the neck yoke 1 and terminate in depending flanges 6 detachably secured together by means of short nutted bolts 7. On the outer face of each flange 6 is detachably secured by means of the nutted bolts 7, a plate 8 having formed therein a half socket 9, and the intermediate portions 'of the flanges 6 be tween the half sockets 9 are cut away to form a seat 10. Swiveled withinthe 00- operating half sockets 9 and the seat 10 is a supporting head 11 terminating at its lower end in a depending hinge lug 12. The clamping band 5 is positively held against movement on the neck yoke 1 by means of a wood screw 13 countersunk in the clamping band 5 and screwed into the neck yoke 1. The pole socket is in the form of a metallic disk 14 having a marginal and laterally projecting annular flange 15. At its central porti'on, the disk l f'isprovided with the customary perforations 16 through which the ,pole cap 3 is adapted to be inserted,
Secured to the upper surface of the flange 15 is a'pair of laterally spaced hinged lugs 17 adapted to receive therebetween the hinge lug 12, and the hinged lugs 12 and17 are secured. together'for hinge-like movement by means of a long hinge bolt 18 passed through alined perforations formed therein. To prevent accidental removal of the hinge bolt 18, the same is provided with a nut 19 and a cotter 20.
Detachably mounted within the annular flange :15 is a non-metallic filling block'21 preferably made up of several thicknesses of leather sewed together and provided with a central perforation 22 which is alined with theprforation 16 inthe disk 14 through which the pole cap 3 is adapted to be inserted asfaras permitted by the stop flange 4 (see Fig. 2.) By reference to Fig.,2, it' 7 will be noted that the central perforation 22 of the filling block 21 is of slightly less diameter than the diameter of the perforation 16 in the disk l lthereby preventing any of the metallic parts of the neck yoke center from coming incontact with the pole cap 3 or the stop flange 4. The filling block 21 is detachably held within the annular flange 15 "by means of several small screws 23, as shown, three. By making" thenon-metallic filling block 21 detachable, the same may be turned into various different positions within the annular flange l4 and when worn out,
I a new filling block may be substituted therefor.
The numeral 24 indicates a so-called look yoke, the prongs of which are pivoted on the hinged bolt 18, and the/lower portion of which is adapted to be engaged with the pole cap 3, just at the rear of the stop flange 4, so as to thereby hold the pole socketfrom accidentally slipping off from the pole cap.
The swivel connection between the members of the neck yoke center permits free action between the neck yoke and the pole.
What I claim is:
1. In a neck yoke center, the combination with a neck yoke and a clamping band surroundlng the same and. having formed therein 'a pair of cooperating head receiving seats, of detachable half-sockets secured to said clamping band for cooperation with pole socket and swiveled in said seats and cooperating half-sockets, substantially as described.
2. In a neck yoke center, the combination with a neck yoke and a clamping band surrounding the same and having formed therein a pair ofcooperating head receiving seats, of detachable half-sockets secured to said clamping band for cooperation With said seats, a pole socket having a pole passage,
and a connecting head secured to said pole socket by a hinge joint, and swiveled in said seats, and cooperating half-sockets, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix signature in presence of two Witnesses.
