Description

J. SINGER.
GOMPBNSATING LUG FOB SHOTGUNS.
APPLICATION nun nov. 19, 1910.
1,014,913. Patented Jan. 16,1912.
JOSEPH SINGER, 015 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHRISTIAN KREMPEL, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
COMPENSATING LUG FOR SHOTGUNS.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
lle it known that I, Josnrn Smonn. a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Compensating Lug for Shotguns, of which the following is a specification.
In some forms of shot-guns now in use great annoyance, as well as loss of accuracy in shooting qualities, is caused by the wearing of either the bolt seat in the lug which is attached to the breech of the barrels or the wearing away of the bolt which engages with the lug to lock the barrels to the frame of the gun. Such wear of bolt or lug seat is caused by the strain of the explosion coming upon these parts. Any wear upon either the bolt or seat on the lug will pre vent an accurate locking of the barrels to the frame which is evidenced by the barrels having a play or movement with relation to the frame when the gun is closed. This movement or looseness, while being most annoying to the user, also lessens the accuracy in sighting the gun in shooting.
One object of my invention is to provide a lug for shot-guns with compensating means, whereby the wear thereon occasioned by contact with the locking bolt may be taken up.
Another object of my invention is to provide in a lug for shot-guns compensating means for takin up the wear thereof which will be simple 1n construction, positive in action, and which is easily accessible for adjustment.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention, and referring thereto:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lug and bolt, with the barrel and frame of the gun shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the compensating device. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a section on line m--m in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on line 00 w in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a perspective of the compensating seat member and its attaching parts.
In Fig. 1, the barrel is indicated at 1 and the frame at 2 in dotted lines. The lug 3 is attached to the barrel in the usual manner and a bolt 4 is provided on the frame for engagement with the lug to hold the barrel to position on the frame, said bolt engaging in a recess or socket 5 in the lug. A compensating seat member is provided at that Specification of Letters Patent.

part of the recess where the wear and strain comes due to the kick of the gun. said member comprising a barrel 6 adapted to slide longitudinally in a cylindrical channel or way 7 in the lug 3, a flange 8 extending from said barrel and a head 9 on said flange formed with a seat 10 for engaging the bottom of the bolt 4 and with a shoulder 11. The lug 3 is formed with a. vertical channel 12 extendng upwardly from the channel 7 and receiving and guiding the flange 8 and with a recess 13 in which the head 9 is received and guided. The channel 7 in which the barrel 6 is guided extends obliquely or is inclined upwardly and forwardly with reference to the axis of the barrel or the lower edge of the bolt 4, whereas the seat 10 is parallel to said lower edge of the bolt 4.- so that longitudinal motion of the compensating member by sliding of the barrel 6 in the channel 7 causes the seat 10 to be raised and lowered slightly. Such longitudinal motion may be produced by any suitable adjusting means, for example, a screw 14 engaging in a screw-threaded bore in the barrel 6 and provided at its rear end with an operating head 16 having a kerf 17 for receiving a screw driver or other operating means and provided with an annular groove 18 in which engages a locking screw 19 screwing through the lug 3 and into said groove.
The device is used as follows: When the parts of the gun are assembled, the compensating member is adjusted by means of the adjusting device 14 in such manner as to bring the seat firmly against the bottom of the bolt 1 and when the bottom of the bolt or the seat, or both of these parts, become worn by continued use, so that there is any looseness in their contact, this may be taken up and removed by screwing the compensating member forwardly so as to cause it to rise on its inclined guide and bring the seat again into tight contact with the bolt. The screw 19 is screwed into engagement with the annular groove 18 to lock the parts in position.
What I claim is:
1. In combination with a gun barrel and frame, and lug and bolt means on the barrel and frame for fastening the barrel to the frame, of a compensating member on said lug adjustable relatively to the bolt to provide tight contact therewith, said compensating member being slidably mounted in the lug means on the barrel to move obliquely relatively to the engaging portion of the bolt and provided with a seat for engaging the bolt, and means for adjusting the said member longitudinally in its oblique mounting.
2. In combination with a gun barrel and frame, and lug and bolt means on the barrel and frame for fastening the barrel to the frame, of a compensating member mounted to slide obliquely on said lug so as to be adjustable relatively to the bolt to provide tight contact therewith, and a screw connected to said lug means on the barrel and engaging the said compensating member to adjust the same longitudinally in its oblique mounting.
3. The combination with a gun barrel and frame, :1 lug on the barrel and a bolt on the frame engaging said lug, of compensating means for providing tight contact between the lug and bolt consisting of a member comprising a cylindrical barrel, an extension therefrom formed with a seat for engaging the bolt, the said lug being provided with a cylindrical channel for receiving and guiding said barrel, a screw engaging in said barrel and having a head provided with an annular groove, and a locking screw screwing in the lug and engaging in said groove. said cylindrical channel extending obliquely to the engaging portion of the bolt whereby longitudinal adjustment of the barrel in said channel tightens the seat of said compensating member on said bolt.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 11th day of November, 1910.
