To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR G. Morin, J r., citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Look and Mortise Gages, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to gages, and particularly to a gage for the marking of lock mortise and tenon cuts.
The object of the present invention is to provide a substantial, easily adjusted, compact and inexpensive gage for the use of carpenters, joiners and others, and particularly to provide a gage constructed of punched, stamped and folded sheet metal.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an edge View of the tool, showing it as adjusted in several positions when adapted for use in marking hinge mortises in door and rabbets and for marking the lock and striking plate mortises. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device, showing it as fully expanded and adjusted. F ig. 3 is a central, longitudinal section through the tool. Fig. 1 is a transverse section on line X* Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the spacer. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the sliding plates. Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing the under part of the nose plate, 6 and but-t member, 17.
In the present embodiment of my inven tion I build a rectangular body structure by riveting together an upper plate 2 and bottom plate 8, and an intermediate body member or spacer 4t of even length with, and secured permanently between the upper and lower plates 2 and 3. The upper plate 2 is upturned at a right angle, forming a transverse wing 5, and over this wing 5 is carried an adjustable nose plate 6 adapted to be temporarily clamped in its several adjusted positions to the composite central body, formed by the pieces 2, 3 and 4, by means of a screw or equivalent locking device 7, having a countersunk head working in a slot 8 formed in the upper surface of the nose piece 6.
As shown in Fig. 2, the upper edge of the wing 5 is raised to form a seat in which is reciprocable the shank of a marking point Specification of Letters Patent.

8 which projects from the transverse end of the nose piece 6 and is downwardly bent, as at 9, forming a point whereby a line may be scribed by the user of the tool to mark the dept-h of a hinge cut at the rear edge of adoor, indicated at a, Fig. 1. The marker 8' is adapted to be adjusted longitudinally beneath the nose piece 6 and screwed in adjusted position by means of the screw or equivalent clamping device 10, reciprocable in the slot 8 of the nose piece. The nose piece 6 is bent downwardly at 11, forming a'gage surface adapted to rest against one face of the door indicated at b, Fig. 1, and then bent forwardly in a pair of parallel bars 12, which are separated by a central slot 13, through which there projects upwardly a scribing point 14 bent upwardly from the upper body plate 2; and the distance between the adjacent gage surface 11 and the projecting scribing point 11 may be variously adjusted by releasing the clamping screw 7 and sliding member 6 relatively to the body plate 2. The nose piece 6 is angularly bent from its upper plane and eX- tended transversely across the end of the body structure and then bent rearwardly, forming a pair of parallel spaced arms, 15, adapted to bear upon the lower plate 3 of the body structure. This lower body plate 3 is provided with an integral scribing point 16 whereby marks can be made upon material to be worked, at various distances from the outer plane of the transverse end of the nose piece 6; the relative location of the adjustable point 16 of the body portion 3 being temporarily locked in its adjusted position by means of the screw 7, when the parts have been adjusted as re quired. For instance, to mark a hinge cut on a door jamb, as indicated at 0. Upon the opposite end of the composite body structure there is adjustably mounted a substantially U-shaped butt member 17, the upper surface of which is divided into a 'pair of parallel spaced arms 18 within the plane of which reciprocates the projecting arms 12 of the nose piece 6. Thus the two adjustable members 6 and 17 are alined and guided by each other, and one may be adjusted independently of the other and each locked by its respective screw; the nose piece 6 by its screw 7 and the butt member 17 by a screw or other appropriate locking device 19 which passes upwardly through the slot formed in the lower long arm 20 of the butt member 17, the screw 19 being threaded into the composite body portion of the tool.
The central body plate or member 4, as shown in Fig. 5, is provided with a clownturned scribing point 21, projecting downwardly and beyond the plane of the plate 20 of the butt member 17 Fig. 3, which plate 20 is provided with a central slot 22 wherein may play the scribing point 21, when the butt member 17 is longitudinally adjusted upon the body structure. The body member 4 is shown as cut out upon each side, as at 23, to form channels between the upper and lower body members 2 and 3, wherein may move screws 25 carrying on their ends sliding plates 26 and 27, the former of which moves in a chamber formed above the central plate 1 by a recess or slot, formed for its reception in the body plate 2 Fig. 3. Similarly the lower sliding plate 27 is reciprocable in a chamber formed between the lower face of the central member 1 and butt plate 20. Each of these slidable plates 26 and 27 is provided with scribing points 28 and 29 respectively, which project through the upper members 18 of the butt member 17 and through the lower plate 20 of the butt member 17.
In operation, when the user of the tool desires to mark upon the front edge of the door, as b, the width of the slot of the mortise for the lock, he adjusts the nose member 6 upon the body structure to or from the fixed scribing point 14: of the upper plate 2 the requisite distance, so that one line will be marked on the edge of the door parallel to the face of the door and at the desired distance therefrom. Determining the width of the lock to be inserted into the door, scribing point 28 is then set a distance from the fixed point 14 equal to the width of the look by moving its respective screw 25 backwardly or forwardly in its chamber or slot 23 formed in the member 4:. Then by placing the gage face 11 against the face of the door and pressing the tool against the edge, appropriate marks may be scribed by moving the tool vertically along the edge of the door. When the user desires to scribe marks upon the jamb for the reception of a striking plate, he works the butt member 17 by unscrewing its retaining device 19 and slides the member 17 so that its operative face will assume a position as distant from the fixed.

The scribing point 29 is then adjusted a requisite distancefrom the fixed point 21 and locked in the adjusted position by its respective screw 25 and the adjustable butt member 17 is also locked by its screw 19. It will now be seen that this tool may be adjusted and locked in its adjusted positions so that various scribings may be made without readjusting the tool for each different use; that is, after the hinge marking gage has been adjusted a number of pieces may be marked with the same adjustment and at the same time the lock marking gage points may be independently adjusted and locked and likewise the striking plate scribing points may be adjusted and locked.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A look and mortise gage, comprising a rectangular composite body portion having scribing points, and longitudinal adjustable gage members carried by the body portion, the upper member of the body portion carrying one of the scribing points and having the end opposite said point bent parallel therewith and housed within one of the gage members, said gage member also housing one end of the composite body portion.
2. A look and mortise gage, comprising a rectangular composite body portion composed of upper, lower and intermediate plates, said plates having integral scribing points, longitudinal adjustable gage members carried by the body portion, the upper member of the body portion carrying one of the scribing points and having the end opposite said point bent parallel therewith and housed within one of the gage members, said gage member also housing one end of the body portion, and adjustable scribing points reciprocably mounted in the composite body port-ion.
3. A look and mortise gage, comprising a rectangular composite body portion composed of upper, lower and intermediate plates, said plates having integral scribing points, longitudinal adjustable gage members carried by the body portion, the upper member of the body portion carrying one of the scribing points and having theend opposite said point bent parallel therewith and housed within one of the gage members, said gage member also housing one end of the body portion, adjustable scribing points reciprocably mounted in the composite body portion, and means for locking the scribing points in adjusted positions.
1. A lock and mortise gage, comprising a rectangular body portion composed of upper, lower and intermediate plates, said plates having scribing points, an adjustable butt member bent to inclose one end of the composite body portion and slidably engaging opposite surfaces of the body portion, the upper part of the butt member being recessed longitudinally, and means for temporarily locking the butt member in adjusted position.
5. A lock and mortise gage, comprising a rectangular body portion, composed of upper, lower and intermediate plates, said plates having integral slotted scribing points, an
adjustable butt member having parallel upper and lower portions inclosing one end of the body portion, said upper part of the butt member being recessed longitudinally, an adjustable nose member housing the other end of the body portion and having parallel parts slidably engaging opposite surfaces thereof, said nose member having a longitudinal extension slidably fitting the recessed portion of the butt member, means for temporagily lockingthe butt member in adjusted position, and means for looking the nose member in adjusted position.
