ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF NEW ANCHOR FOR- TANK-BANDS.
Patented Jan. 16,1912.
Application filed December 30, 1910. Serial No. 600,015.
To all whom it Hi (12/ concern Be it known that I. ALLEx E. Osrnxxonn, residing at Ridgewood, Bergen countv. New Jersey, and being a citizen of the I'nited States. have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Anchors for Tank-Bands. of which the following is a full, clear. and exact description. such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof will occur to persons skilled in the art.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a transversev A further object is to provide a cross' bearer of strong but light construction and to support upon the opposite. ends of said cross bearer the running boards of the car.
ll'ith these and other objects in view, the invention comprises parts, referred to by numerals, as follows:
1-1 indicate the center sills; 2 the tank and 3 one of the tank bands which are usuall employed in tank-car construction.
Fixed to the top flanges of the center sills is the tension member a of the cross bearer which extends beyond the opposite sides of said sills and carries upon the upper surface of its opposite ends the usual running boards as 5.
Extending beneath the under side of each of the center sills is a compression member 6 which is ordinarily of angle shape and is formed with a pendent flange as 7 and extends transversely of the car under said cen- The portions of the member 6 extending laterally beyond said sills are bent upwardly as shown in Fig. l to engagement with the adjacent end portions of the ten- Fixed to the under side of each of the center sills. adjacent the member 6 is an anchor casting 9 which casting is formed with a pendent flange 10 disposed to fit against the vertical leg of the angle 6 and to be riveted thereto. Each of said castings is also formed with an upwardly extending flange 11 disposed to engage the inner faces of the respective center sills and to be riveted thereto. Each of the castings 9 is further formed with an obliquely disposed extension 12 which is effectually strengthened by hav ing one of its sides formed integral with the adjacent portion of the flange 10. Therespective ends of the tank band are adapted to be passed through a suitable aperture as 13 formed in each of the extensions 12 and to be secured by a nut as 14.- fixed to the end of said band below said flange.
lVith the structure as disclosed it is ap parent that the strain of the tank hands is transferred partly to the center sills and partly to the cross bearer,
ll hat- I claim is:
1. In a tank car, a cross-bearer, center sills and tank band anchors connecting said sills and, cross-bearers.
2. In a tank car, a cross-bearer and running board support, center sills and tank band anchors connecting said sills and crossbearers. r
3. In a tank car, a center sill, a crossbearer extending partly below said center sill, tank band anchors connectingasaid s ill and cross-bearer and tank bands termiin ating insaid anchors.
4. In a tank car, a center sill, a crossbearer and running board support extending partly below'said center sill, tank band anchors connecting said silland cross-bearer and tank bands terminating in said anchors.
5. In. a tank car, center sills, a crossbearer and tank band anchors connected respectively between and to said sills and to the cross-bearer.
6. In a tank car, flanged center sills, a flanged cross-bearer and flanged tank band anchors connected respectively with said sills and crossbearer.
7. In a tank car, center sills, a crossbea er comprising a member extending below said center sills and to a plane above the bottom of said sills, anchor members connected with said member and to said sills and tank bands extending into said anchor members.
8. In a tank car, center sills, a crossbearer comprising a flanged member, an anchor member formed with a flange adapted to, engage the flange of the cross-bearer member, said anchor member serving as a connector between said cross-bearer member and said center sills and a tank band extending into said anchor member.
9. In a tank car, center sills, a crossbearer comprising a flanged member, an anchor member formed with a flange adapted to engage the flange of the cross-bearer member, and being also formed with a plurality of flanges adapted to engage said center, sills upon a plurality of faces,-said anchor member serving as a connector between said cross-bearer member and saidcenter sills and a tank band extending into said anchor member.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set -my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
ALLEN E. OSTRANDER.
