To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK F. SOHWALLER, citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in bed-steads; and it consists'in the novel details of construction more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a bed-stead showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1; parts being broken away; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, with parts in elevation; Fig. 4c is an end view of the corner casting or socket; and Fig. 5 is an end view of the coupling link-carried by the corner post.
The object of my invention is to provide a special coupling to connect the sides of a metallic bed-stead with the head and foot sections thereof, with a view of facilitating the disassembling of the parts for purposes of packing, shipping or storing; to provide a coupling which if broken, or injured in any way may be readily replaced without affecting the remaining portions of the bed construction; to provide a coupling which will permit the quick assembling of the parts composing the bedstead, and to provide further and other features possessing advantages better apparent from a detailed description of the invention, which is as follows Referring to the drawings, H represents the head-section, and F the foot section of a conventional metallic bed-stead, each section being provided with posts 1 which constitute the corner posts for the bed, the posts being made of hollow piping as shown.
S represents the side rails or members, and G the terminal, cross rails or members, the latter terminating in the present instance in corner castings or sockets 2 secured there-' to, the sockets being provided with chambers 3 which are open at both ends. The sockets 2 are provided with semi-cylindrical vertical extension bearings 4: for the reception and partial embrace of the posts 1, the latter being provided opposite the adjacent open end of the chamber 3 withan opening to receive the finger or arm 5 bent from one of the arms of a looped link 6 disposed on the outside of the post, said link being formed or bent from a stilf cylindrical bar of iron. The arm 5 is bent substantially at right angles to the plane of disposition of the loop of the link 6 so that whenthe loop is at right angles to the aXis of the post, the finger 5 will bear the full length against the inner wall of the post, the loop being thus anchored to the post. The opposite arm of the link 6 terminates in a bent portion or finger 5 shouldered against the outer wall of the pipe 1, and entering a depression d in the wall of the socket 2. The ends of the members S are provided with loops, eyes or staples 7 which are received by the opposite open ends of the chambers 3.
The loop 6 beinganchored to the post 1 is inserted into the chamber 3 from one end thereof, and the loop 7 is inserted from the opposite end, the lengths of the loops being such, and being so positioned, as to overlap one another within the chamber. The top wall of the socket is provided with an opening through which is dropped a locking pin 8 which enters the passage-way formed by the overlapping of the loops 6, 7, thus securing the parts together. The assembling is thus done quickly and effectively. When it becomes desirable to pack the bedstead, the pin 8 is withdrawn, leaving the parts 2, S, F, and C free to be disassembled and packed snugly for shipment or storage.
Having described my invention, claim is 2-- 1. A metallic bed-stead comprising corner-posts, side rails, terminal cross-rails, sockets at the ends of the cross-rails, loops formed on the ends of the side rails, and adapted to enter the sockets, pins for securing the loops within the sockets, suitable bearing formations on the sockets for receiving the posts, and means cooperating with the pins for coupling the posts to the sockets.
2. A metallic bed-stead comprising hollow corner-posts, side and terminal cross rails between the posts, open-ended socket formations at the ends of the cross-rails, loops at the ends of the side-rails, for entering the chamber of the sockets from one end, loops coupled to the posts and positioned to enter the socket chambers from the opposite end and overlap the first mentioned loops, suit- What I able bearings for the posts formed on the sockets, and pins passed through the Walls of the socket and through the opening of the overlapped loops, whereby the parts are coupled together.
3. In combination with a hollow bedpost having an opening in the wall thereof, a loop projecting from the post and provided with a bent terminal or finger to enter said opening and engage the inner wall of the post the loop proper being disposed at right angles to the axis of the post, a terminal cross-rail for the bed, a socket at the end of said rail for receiving the loop carried by the post, and means for securing the loop within and to, the socket.
