COMBINATION POINTER AND JOINTER FOR STONE AND BRICK LAYERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1912.
Application filed April 15, 1910. Serial No.,555,627.
and State of Oklahoma, have invented oer-- tain' new and useful Improvements in a Combination Pointer and J ointer for Stone and Brick Layers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates toa combination pointer and jointer for stone and brick layers, in which a small trowel-blade has an ofiset, tapered and bent handle to point and smooth the joints between the stones or bricks in walls.
The objects of my invention are to combine in one tool a pointer and a jointer as a matter of convenience and economy. I accomplish these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device; Fig. 3 shows a portion of a wall in elevation and the device, in part, in operation, Fig. 4: shows the device, in part, being used as a jointer. v
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings A designates a steel blade having a blunt point a, and oval edges 1) varying in degrees of convexity to adapt it to scrape off the surplus mortar in pointing the various joints between the courses of stone or of brick in walls, it belng customary to leave the mortar in the joints below the plane of the wall and also smooth. See Fig. 3. To make the device more convenient in operation the portion of the blade A, opposite its point has an upwardly and rearwardly extending shank B, terminating in a rearwardly extending cylindrical handle G, being slightly enlarged at 0, intermediate its ends and having its rear end gradually tapered and downwardly bent. See Fig. 1.
The device is preferably, constructed from a single piece of metal.
In the construction of stone and brick walls it is quite common to point the joints in the walls with colored mortar to show contrast and break the monotony of the appearance of the wall.
In operation, the blade A is used in filling the joints h of the wall with mortar and where little importance is attached to the finish, the edge 7) of the blade A is moved along the joint, transversely thereto, to remove the surplus mortar to a-degree below the plane of the wall, varying according to the portion of the edge I) of the blade used, as at d and 6, Fig. 3, the greater the convexity of the edge ofthe blade used the deeper will be the depression of the mortar in the joint. In walls where the corners f of the stones 2' are cut away as at f in Fig. 4: and where the bricks j have bevelededges as at g, Fig. 3, after the surplus mortar is removed from the joint h by the blade A the device is reversed and the convex portion of the handle G, as at C, or O, is drawn along in the joint pressing the mortar firmly into the joint and leaving its surface smooth. See Figs. 3 and 4. On account of the handle C being bent and tapered it is adapted to joints of varying sizes within the range of ordinary practice, as at C and C" being cross sections on lines 00 w and w m Fig.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A combined pointer and jointer, in one piece, comprising a blade, a handle integral ALirY w. KLINE.
