O. S. KING. INDICATOR FOB. FTORAGE VESSELS.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 28, 1911.
Patented J an. 9, 1912.
ATTORNEYS o'r'ro 's. KING, OF
NEW YORK, N. Y.
INDICATOR FOR STORAGE VESSELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 28,1211. Serial No. 617,411.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OTTO S. KING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in thecounty and State of New York, have invented a new and "Improved Indicator for Storage Vessels, of which the -foland exact description.v
lowing is a full, clear, My invention is a-nattachment for medlcine bottles and storage vessels of all kinds,
designed to indicate, both tot-he eye and to the touch, the nature of the contents.
The object thereof is to prevent people from drinking-poison and other. deleterious substances, by mistake.
To this end 1t comprises a signal device which can be attached either to the stopper of the bottle or'other: storage vessel, or to the erence indicate the same parts in all the cator and the'stopper attached thereto; Fig.
3 is a view of my improved indicator in the ring receives a button 6, having ear'sor projjections 7 standing out front its opposite the top of, this cap. rises a shank views.
Figure 1 is a view of my improved indicator, showing a form designed for attachment to the stopper of a bottle; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the indiform which is'designed to be fitted around the neck of the bottle or other storage vessel; Fig. 4 is asection on a plane taken throughthe necko'f the bottle and indicator thereon, in the view shown on Fig. 5; and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of a bottle or storage vessel, showing both forms of my improved-indicator attached thereto, one loc 'ing fastened to thecork andthe other being fastened to the neck, as shown.
One form of my improved indicator is indicated. by the numeral 1. This form com prises a cap which can bemade of metal or wood ,andis designedto be firmly secured in any suitable-way to the top. .of a stopper 2 of a bottle .or other storage vessel 8. From supports an integral'annularring- 5. This faces.- This buttoni flat, b'ut bulges on each side of the ring 5, and it may be made integral with the'ring 5 and shank 4 if dewhich sired. The button is given a distinctive color, suclras red, and the word Poison or any other suitable expression, is placed upon the opposite faces of this buttong6.
When the stopper 2 having this indicator attached to its outer end is placed on the bottle or storage vessel 3, the. eye of any person picking up the same will be attracted by the red color of the disk 6, so that note will infallibly be taken of the word-f Poison thereon. This will give warning that the contents 'of the vessel 3 are unsafe, which is the purpose of my invention. It willbe noted that the outstanding ears 7 will make. the red color of the disk or button 6 suffibe viewed edgewise of the ring portion 5. It will also be observed that this form of my indicator has a distinctive "shape, and that a person who has once seen the same will-recognize the indicator by the sense of touch, should he happen to take up the bottle in the dark. The. form of indicator shown on Fig. 3 consists of a strip of soft metal 10 havinga transverse slot 11 in one end. The other end isrOunded, as shown at 11, and when the strip is placed in position around the neck of the storage vessel, the end 11" passes through the slot 11 and is bent back, as shown on Fig. 5. to hold the strip in place. Adjacent the end containing the slot 11 are a series of recesses or indentationsll", formed in both edges of the strip. I preferably use three such recesses, and in the bottom of an opposite end recess' on'the opposite edge, I
series of openings through the strip '10; and in these openings I place buttons 15, similar to the button 6, with the exception that these buttons are flat onone sidejand have projections lti extendingfroin the other side, as shown, these projections being similar. to: the .ears 7. The-projections having theears preferenceof-the maker. .1 may also make the-buttons 15 with the projections 16 therethese buttons and their projections are colored similarly to the button-(5,a1id have the word Po is on, "or othensuitable extori's 1,5may bulge out"frorn theface of the strip if desired.
It will be seen that two of-the buttons 15 Patented Jan. 9,1912.
end recess aloiigone edge, as well as in the.
form projecting lugs 13.114 indicates a 16 may be flat or curved, according tothe.
on integral with the strip 10, if desired; and
pression, acr oss' the-faces thereof. The but ciently noticeable, even should the indicator are formed in that portion of the strip 7 which has the edge indentations 12, these two buttons having a pairof these indentations 12 lying on opposite edges. of the strip between them. Then the strip is placed around the neck of the bottle .3, it isbent together around the portion lying between the two middle recesses '12, so that thebuttons which lie on either side of this portion will stand out, as shownon Fig. 5, and form projection '17 Each of the lugs 13 will now be bent over to engage one of the recesses 12 along the same edge of the striplO, to lock the portions containing the two buttons between the lugs 13, on Fig. 3, together, and the end 11 passing through the slot 11 will be bent back against the band 10, and
- hold the same in place. This band may be 'used with the-indicator 1, as shown onFig. 5, or it may be -used alone if desired. 'The red color of the buttons 15 will warnanyone handling the bottle as to'the nature of the contents; and since the band passes entirely around the neck of this bottle or storage vessel, and has the lug 17 formed thereon, the redcolor of the parts 1 5 will be apparent from whatever direction the bottle is viewed; and should any person take-hold "of the bottle, or other vessel, in the dark,
the projection 17 will comeinto contact with 'his hand and warn him of the danger.
It will be observed that'my indicator is not necessarily limited to use on storage vessels or bottles containing poison. I may attach the same to a storage vesselcontaining inflammable liquids, or any storage vessel, to indicate the nature, of the contents,
whether the same are poisonous or not; In such a case I merely substitute a suitable word for the word shown in the figures on the drawings. I-may also attach the strip 10- around the body of a bottle, or around the handle, or any other projecting part, in-
stead of fastening the same around the neck- .thereof.
I wish to reserve to myself the right to make such changes insize, shape and arrangement of parts as fairly fall within the scope and spirit of my invention. I V -Having thus described mywinvention, I
. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
