To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. ARM- STRONG, citizen of the United States, residing at Marysville, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn- Sprinklers, of which the following is a specification.
My present inventionrelates to improvements in lawn sprinklers, and has, among others, for its objects the provision of a sprinkler which may be produced at an extremely low cost, which will produce a fine spray, and which will distribute such spray evenly over a square plot of ground; and the invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly defined by the appended claims.
A. sprinkler constructed in accordance with my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view; Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of l; and Fig. 3 a view illustrating how the spray is distributed over an area of ground of rectangular form.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral 4 designates the body of the sprinkler which is composed of three parts only, to wit: a shell 4? for atop, a formed bottom 5, and a sheet metal receptacle 6 for the hose connection, having a rolled thread. In the construction of my improved sprinkler, I shape up the top by the aid of suitable dies and (preferably at.
a single operation) punch therein a circular series of holes a, using for this purpose a punch of such a character that the holes have rough or serrated edges which break up the outgoing streams into mist-like spray. After the holes have been punched, the portion of the top which carries the holes is bent or formed to different angles so that the issuing sprays are correspondingly differently inclined, the water being thrown to different distances to cause it to be distributed over a square area or plot. If desired, more or less holes I) may be provided in the space within the circular series.
The top and bottom are provided with central alining openings, the edges of which are brought together and the one spun over the other to secure a firm and water tight joint, as indicated at P, and these parts are likewise secured together at the bottom edge by spinning one over the other.
The hose connection 6 which, as before stated, is made of pressed metal, is provided with a rolled thread as indicated at 6* for engagement with the hose coupling, and an internal flange 6 forming a washer seat, and said connection 6 is preferably secured in place by spinning together its edge and the edge of the opening in which it is seated as I indicated at 6.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A lawn sprinkler comprising a formed and perforated top and a bottom, said parts having edges spun together at the center and bottom, and having a hose coupling at the side.
2. A lawn sprinkler comprising a perforated top provided with a subsantially vertical annular wall and a central opening, and a bottom having also a central opening, .the edges of said openings being in contact and spun together, and the outer edges of said top and bottom being also spun together, and a hose coupling carried by said vertical wall.
3. A lawn sprinkler comprising a hollow sheet metal body having an annular series of holes punched therein with the metal of the sheet through which the holes pass and adjacent some of the holes pressed to difierent angles from that adjacent other holes.
4. A lawn sprinkler having its top provided with a circular series of holes, the perforated portion of said top being shaped to cause the spray issuing from said perforations to cover a square area.
