VALVE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9, 1912.
Application filed November 28, 1906. Serial No. 345,527.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHNSTON NOLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have inventedy certain new and useful Improvements in.
Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valves and particularly to that class of valves known as blow 0E valves, for steam boilers. The .object of the invention is to provide a valve of simple and efcient construction whereby the steam or other fluid may be eii'ectually shut off, and a further object of the inventionv is to provide for the adjustment of the parts when they become worn, all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a. longitudinal section through a valve embodying my invention, showing the valve closed. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof, as on the line 2-2 of Fig; 1, showing the valve open. Fig.'3 is a transverse section, as on the line 3-3, of Fig. 1.v Fig. 4 is a transverse section as on theline 4-4 of Fig. 1.
4 designates a cylindrical casing having lateral openings 5 therein, constituting the inlet and .outlet passageways of the valve. One end of the casing 4 is closed by a head 6, and the interior of the casing is provided with a suitable bushing 7 Fitted to the interior of the casing, is a piston 8, comprising a body portion 9, having` a flange 10 on one of its ends, and a stem 11 projecting from the other of its ends; collars 12 and 13 surrounding the body portion 9, and having rings 14 and 15 between theI collars 12 and 13 and the collar 13 and flange 10, respectively. The width of the lateral openings 5 in cross sectional area as shown in Fig. 2, is less than the diameter of the Casin 4, to the end that when the piston is move to the position shown in Fig. 1, the packing 14 will engage the interior of the casing 4 all around the openings 5, and thus effectually prevent the passage of pressure fluid from one opening into the other.
Extending transversely through the body 9 of the piston and the collar 13 surrounding the same, is an opening 16 substantially equal in area to the area of the opening', whereby, when the piston is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow, the open- Ving 16 may be brought into register with the openings 5, and thus open the valve by effecting a communication between the openings 5.
. Thelstem 11' is screw-threaded, and extends outwardly, and is slidingly tted to an opening in a boss extending from the end head 6. Screwed on to the outer end of the stem 11 is a hub 18, of a suitable hand wheel 19. The inner end of the hub' 18 is provided with a flange 20 in engagement with a flange 21 on the outer end of the boss 17; and surf rounding the hub 18 and boss 17, is a collar 22,v provided on its interior with a circumferential groove to 4 which arev fittedzthe flanges 20 and 21, thus permitting the wheel 19 to be rotated and-preventing its movement longitudinally of the stem 11. In 0rder to prevent the rotation of the stemvll during the rotation of the wheel 19, I provide a key 28 secured to the boss 17, and adapted to slide within a groove in the stem l1.' By the construction just described it will be seen that by rotatingthehand wheel 19 the piston 8 may be moved longitudinally within the casing4 to bring either the opening 16 or packing 14 into register with the openings 5, and thus effect the opening or closing of the valve as described. Thehead 6 is provided witha vent passage 29 to permit the ingress and egress of air to and from the interior of the adjacent end of the casing 4 during the movement of the piston 8 therein. The stem 11 is provided with a longitudinal groove therein l,into which extends a key 28 projecting from the boss 17, to prevent rotationof the piston 8 with the rotation of the hand wheel 19, and insure the registry of the opening 16 with the openings 5. The collars 12y and 13 and the packing rings 14 and 15 are longitudinally movable on. the 'body 9 of the piston 8;
provide the following The body of the piston is provided withr transverse slots 23 through which extends a block 24 having its ends engaged with the collar 12. Bearing against the block 24 is the inner reduced end of ay rod 25, extending outwardly through the rod may be turned.
the stem 11. The inner end of therod25l is slidingly fitted to the stemA 11, andthe Vouter enlarged'end 26 of the rod is screw `threaded and screwed into the outer end of s the-stem`117 whereby; when the rod 25is.
turned, it will engage the block 24 and force the collar 12 toward the flange 10, and thus leffect the adjustment of the packing rings 14: and 15. 'Ihe outer end of the rod 25 is` provided with a nut 27; by means of'which I claim I y 1.
