ROBERT TUDOR GARRIS ON OF PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY.
TRAP-COVER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT TUDOR GAR- RISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Princetonfin the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trap- Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trap covers designed for the purpose of covering a catch basin or trap or a casing in which is inclosed the water cocks of a water supply system, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a cap or cover which will lie substantially flush with the surface of the floor or pavement.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cap or cover for a trap having a threaded boss and having a recessed upper side having a centrally disposed wrench engaging projection by means of which the cap or cover can be readily connected to or disconnected from the trap, said cover being provided with an outlying flange and a flat metal disk to cover the recessed portion at the center of the cap or cover, to present an unbroken surface flush with the upper surface of the floor.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a cover for a trap which will have no projecting portions to wear out the carpet, oil cloth or other floor covering.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the cons uction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a central vertical sectional view taken through the cap or cover, and the upper portion of the trap, a portion of the flooring being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cap or cover removed from the trap.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a floor or pavement in which is secured a trap 2, the upper end of said trap being internally screw threaded and terminating at a slight distance below the surface line of the floor.
The cap or cover for the trap comprises a casting consisting of an annular flange 3, and a recessed or depressed central portion Specification of Letters Patent.

4 having a wrench engaging projection 5 extending centrally from the recess 4, said wrench engaging projection terminating below the upper surface of the flange 3. The periphery of the cap is preferably screw threaded as at 6 to fit the screw threads on the interior of the trap 2. Around the recess 4: is a rabbet 7 comprising an annular shoulder and fitted in this rabbet is a metal disk 8 which rests upon the shoulder of the rabbet at its periphery while its. central portion is supported on the top of the wrench engaging projection 5.
From the foregoing, it will be obvious that my trap cover can be readily connected to or disconnected from the trap 2 by means of a wrench applied to the projection 5 and that after the cover has been secured in place the disk 8 is placed in position to conceal the projection 5. The entire device will lie practically flush with the upper surface of the floor and thus prevent any projections from wearing the carpet or oil cloth.
My invention is comparatively simple in construction, can be manufactured at low cost and has many advantages over the devices now in use for a similar purpose.
I claim:
The herein described trap cover comprising a threaded boss having a depression in its upper side, an annular flange surrounding the boss and extending from its upper side, a shoulder surrounding the depression in the boss, a centrally disposed wrench-engaging projection formed integral with the boss and extending from the depression in the upper side of said boss, and a removable disk fitted to lie against the shoulder for covering the wrench-engaging projection, the entire cover and disk being adapted to lie substantially flush with the upper surface of the floor and to form an air-tight trap cover.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT TUDOR GARRISON. Witnesses:
