COMBINED CABINET AND PRINTER FOR TOILET-PAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9,1912.
Application filed May 4, 1911. serial No. 624,993.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM G. STEWART and LOUIS GAUERMANN, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combined Cabinets and Printers for Toilet-Paper, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined cabinet and printer for toilet-paper, and has for its object to construct a device of this character which may be placed in the toilet-rooms of railway stations or other public buildings, and which when utilized will place an advertisement before the user, which advertisement is printed when the user manipulates the device to obtain the paper.
The device is so constructed as to permit the use of a special ink which is very slow in evaporating but will readily and quickly dry when the imprint is made upon the paper, and when dry will not blur or rub off. The ink used will also have medicinal properties so that a benefit will be derived by the use of paper so printed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will 'be exceedingly simple in construction, in-
expensive in the cost of manufacture, but strong and durable, thus preventing the parts from becoming broken or displaced.
'Astill further object of the invention is to provide means for holding a pad of paper for removing one sheet at a time therefrom, printing upon said sheet and delivering the same at an opening provided for such delivery.
With these-ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, we will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of our improved cabinet and printer for toilet paper. Fig. 2, a plan view thereof, a portion of the top wall of the cover being broken away, leaving the side walls of said cover in section for clearly illustrating the relation of the different parts to one another,
and Fig. 3, a sectional view of a portion of the cover and box, showing some of the different constructions which may be used for bearings for the rolls.
In carrying out our invention as here embodled, (1) represents a box or cabinet having one end open as at 2 and having its side walls provided with notches 8. In this box is mounted a toilet paper pad holding device, comprising an attaching member 4 which is fastened to' the bottom of the box 1, said attaching member having wire arms 5 movably carriedby said attaching member, said arms being provided with a plate 6, at their outer end, which plate is normally held away from the bottom of the box by a spring 7. Extending away from the plate 6 toward the attaching member 4 is another arm 8 which is inserted in a pocket 9 formed with the cardboard backing member 10 of the pad, said backing member carrying a knife 11 {vhich holds the sheets of paper 12 of the pac.
l3 denotes the type roll on the periphery of which is placed the impression element 1 1 which is preferably in the form of a rubber stamp. This roll is carried by a shaft 15, that portion of which enters the roll being squared for carrying some suitable means to prevent the revolution of said shaft without the roll 13. This shaft is journaled in suitable bearings carried by the cover 16, the bearing therefor being here shown as a hole 17 in the side walls of said cover, and when the bearings are in the form of holes, it permits the shaft to be passed therethrough and also through the roll. This shaft has a hand wheel 18 whereby the shaft and roll may be revolved, and on the opposite end may be mounted a nut or other retaining device 19 to prevent the withdrawal of said shaft.
The roll 18 carries a gear 20 which meshes with an idle pinion 21 mounted upon a short shaft 22 which is preferably formed with one of the side walls of the cover. This pinion meshes with another gear 23 carried by a gripping roll 24 having a reduced sectional portion 25, thus producing two relatively wide flanges 26, on each of which is mounted a frictional grip 27, said grip being sandpaper or other similar fabric. The gripping roll 24 is mounted upon a shaft 28, the ends of which are journaled in the bearings 29, which as here shown are formed with the side walls of the cover, the shaft being held in place by a cap 30 mounted upon the bearing and held thereagainst by the screws 31.
32 is a distributing roll, the perlphery of which is covered with a fabric 33, which fabric transfers the ink from the font roll 34 to the impression device carried by the type roll. This distributing roll is mounted upon a shaft 35, the ends of' which are mounted in bearings 36, each of said bearings comprising a pair of parallel ribs 37 formed integral with the side walls of the cover and running at an angle to the lower edge of said cover, thereby producing a groove 38 with which registers the ends of the shaft 35. In these bearings are also mounted the ends of the shaft 39, running through the font roll 34, said font roll being held in frictional contact with the distributing roll 32 by springs 40, one end of each spring being attached to the shaft 39 and the opposite end of a pin or projection 41. These springs through the medium of the roll 34, hold the roll 32 in engagement with the impression device 14.
The font roll 34 is covered with a number of layers of absorbent material 42, and on this is placed the ink, said ink being absorbed by the fabric 42 then transmitted in even small amounts to the impression device upon the type roll. As these rolls are revolved, the uppermost sheet of paper is removed from the pad by the gripping device 27 and carried forward until its front edge engages the carrier roll 43 which is covered with a suitable fabric 44, said fabric acting as a cushioning means for the impression device, said carrier roll being held in frictional contact with the type roll by a pair of springs 45, one end of each of said springs being attached to the shaft 46 which passes through the roll and has its ends mounted in the slots 3, the opposite end of each of said springs being fastened to a pin or projection 47.
The operation of the device is as follows :-The entire cabinet may be set upon a shelf or hung upon the wall so that the bottom of the box 1 lies against the wall with the open end 2 at the bottom. Then by revolving the hand wheel 18, the type roll 13 will be revolved through the medium of the shaft 15 which will cause the roll 24 to be revolved in the same direction as the type roll, through the medium of the train of gears. During the revolution of the gripping roll the grip 27 will remove the uppermost sheet of paper from the pad, which pad is held in contact with the gripping roll by the spring 7, forcing said sheet of paper forward to the carrier roll 43 which will carry said sheet of paper between said roll 43 and the type roll 13 producing an inked impression upon the sheet of paper,
the impression device being engaged through the medium of the distributing roll 32 from the fontroll 34. The sheet of paper will then drop downward and be forced out through the open end 2 of the cabinet.
Of course we do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as here shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of our invention.
