To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT JAMES PAGE, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at 47 Stirton street, in the city of Hamilton, in the county of Wentworth, in the .Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Seal- Lock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to seal locks and it has for it-s main object to provide a simple, cheap and extremely effective seal lock which is particularly applicable for use upon railroad cars.
A further object of my invention is to furnish a seal lock which is weather-proof and which instantly gives a visible indication of any illicit attempt to tamper therewith.
I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l, is a central longitudinal section through my improved seal lock. Fig. 2, is a face view of the same looking from the left of Fig. 1.
According to my invention, and as illustrated, a. is the body port-ion of the lock which may be made of any suitable material, and it is provided axially with a recess or boring b, for containing the bolt c. This bolt c, is preferably made as shown, that is to say, it consists of a hollow bushing or cylinder which is closed in at its outer end. Obviously the cross section of the recess b, and bushing c, will be similar and the latter be finished so as to be adaptable for easy axial movement.
d, is a compression spring of appropriate strength which is housed in the recess b, and it is arranged to normally have a tendency to force the bolt c, outwardly.
The locking means generally of my improved seal lock consists of a shackle y', of appropriate cross section which fits snugly into, and is adapted for longitudinal movement through a correspondingly shaped aperture f, provided for its reception in the body portion a, approximately at right angles to the axis of the recess b. Obviously the aperture f, may be at an inclination to the said axis if desired. The shackle j comprises a long leg c and a short leg c. The leg c, is furnished at its lower end with an eye g, to which is secured a chain 7L,- one link only being shownby means of which the seal lock is attached to the door of a railroad car for example. At the upper part of the leg c, I form a collar or enlargement z', which, when the lock is in use, beds down firmly on the upper part of the body portion a, and thereby prevents the ingress of dirt and moisture into the lock. The free end of the short leg c of the shackle enters a recess 7c of the body part a when the shackle is in closed position. The cross-section of the leg c, and the aperture c, will be similar and may be of any desired form.
Ooncentric with the axis of the bushing or bolt c, in the legc, on its inner face and adapted to aline therewith when the lock is in use, I form a recess Z, of similar cross section to said bushing or bolt c, also a key-hole or key-way m, and in said leg c, on its outer face I provide a recess a, of appropriate configuration. This latter recess n, is designed to receive the seal o, conveniently a thin sheet of readily destruct-ible but opaque material. Destructible so that illicit tampering with the lock may be read ily detected, and opaque in order to hide the position and shape of the key hole m.

Assuming that my improved seal lock is securely attached by a chain to the door frame of an ordinary railroad car and that a suitable staple is firmly fixed to the door in a convenient position for cooperation with said lock. When it is desired to seal up the car, the door is closed and the proper official forces back the bolt c, by means of an appropriate key-not shown-passed through the key-way m, whereupon the slidable shackle y', is moved forward until the link 7i, contacts with the lower end of the body portion a. This movement releases the short leg c of the shackle j, which is then hooked over, or on to the staple above referred to. A seal o, bearing the requisite data or distinguishing matter on its face is thereupon placed in the recess a, and the body portion a, is slid back thereover into the position illustrated. Immediately this operation is completed the bolt c, is brought into alinement with the recess Z, whereupon said bolt c, is outwardly forced by the spring (Z, and the parts are firmly and securely locked together. To detach the parts the seal o,
must first be broken before access to the bolt or bushing c, is rendered possible.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that by my invention I provide an extremely simple and effective seal lock, and I Wish it understood that I do not limit myself exclusively to the specific shape or arrangement of the parts above outlined, others being possible Without in any Way departing from the spirit of my invention, and it is intended to include all same Within the ambit of the appended claims. v
Having described my invention, What claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A seal lock comprising, in combination, a body portion embodying a head and a rearward extension having a longitudinal recess formed therein opening into a facial recess of the head, said extension also having a vertical external recess adjacent its rear end, a shackle member, one extremity of Which enters the external vertical recess when the shackle is in its closed position and the other member of which is vertically slidable through the head at the juncture of the longitudinal and facial recesses, a spring actuated bolt mounted in the longitudinal recess and adapted to engage in a cut-out portion of the shackle member, there being a key opening formed transversely through said shackle member yvhich lies in alinement With said bolt When the shackle is in closed position, and a frangible opaque sealing member seated in a recessed portion of the shackle member, and bodily slid able into position with said shackle member, said frangible member concealing and covering said key opening and being freely accessible through the facial recess of the head.
