SPACER FOR LINER-PLATES 0F CENTR-IFUGAL CREAM-SEPARATORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2,1912.
Original application filed June 16, 1909, Serial No. 502,505. Divided and this application filed April 17,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAF M. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spacers for Liner- Plates of Centrifugal Cream-Separators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in centrifugal cream separators, and the object of my improvement is to provide improved spacing means for the liner separating plates so designed and formed as to least interfere with the inwardly-moving cream particles when separating from the full milk under the influence of centrifugal force. This object I have accomplished by means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
This application is a division of my application Serial Number 502,505, filed June 16th, 1909.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an enlarged perspective view of one of my improved spacing-clips for spacing apart the superposed hollow frusta of the liner of a centrifugal cream separator bowl. Fig. 2 is an upper plan view of one of the frusta forming part of such a liner, showing the method of arrangement of the spacing-clips thereon to least interfere with the inward movement of cream particles over the surface of the frustum. Fig. 3 is a central vertical axial section of two of such frusta in superposed relation, and spaced apart by means of my said improved spacing-clips.
Similar numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The frusta 9 are of the conical type, and provided on their inner edges with projection adapted to grasp removably an axially located inlet-tube of the liner (not shown). Between such projections are depressions 12 suitable to permit a current of collected separated cream to flow therethrough on its way to the cream-exit of the bowl.
Each frustum 9 is provided with a plurality of slots adapted to receive the spacing devices 10. The spacing device 10 is formed of a small diamond-shaped piece of metal transversely doubled upon itself to form two parallel spaced apart angular members or limbs, and so inserted in a slot of the frustum 9 as to direct the apices of the limbs toward the outer edge of the frustum. The limbs of the device when inserted, are pressed down and clenched tightly upon the opposite surfaces of the frustum, where they may be soldered or tinned over if desired to secure them in place. This arrangement of the spacing devices orclips 10 with their apices directed radially away from the axis of the frustum affords the least resistance to the inward movement of the separating cream, and thus aids in preventing the clogging of the liner inter-spaces with clotted cream when the cream is either naturally thick and rich or when it is by reason of a comparatively low temperature stiffened in its consistency.
The spacing clips are easily made and applied to the frusta, and may be arranged thereupon in any desired way, and may be of varied forms other than that shown, without departing from the principle of my invention, provided that such clips are so formed as to gradually diminish in dimensions away from the axis of the bowl.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a centrifugal cream separator bowl, liner separating plates, and spacing means located between said plates formed angularly with the apices of their angles directed toward the outer edges of the plates.
2. In a centrifugal cream separator bowl, liner separating plates, and spacers between said plates formed with narrowed outwardly directed parts adapted to stem the inwardly moving cream, as the latter passes to the cream zone of the bowl over said plates.
3. In a centrifugal cream separator bowl, liner separating plates having a plurality of slots, and spacing-clips inserted in said slots, the clips being formed to have their projecting portions narrow in width in a direction radially outward from the axis of the bowl.
4. In a centrifugal cream separator bowl,
liner separating plates having each a plu- Signed at Waterloo, Iowa, this 30th day rality of slots, and U-shaped spacers inserted of March, 1911.
in said slots each spacer havin its members i gradually narrowed to poin ts with the GUSTAF ANDERSON pointed ends directed outwardly along the Witnesses: surfaces of the plate to stem the inwardly O. D. YOUNG, moving current of cream. G. G. KENNEDY.
