PAGE-TURNING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL O. KING, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at El Toro, in the county of Orange, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Page-Turning Device; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a page turning device for sheet music or the like, and it may be said to consist in the novel and improved construction, arrangement and com bination of the parts thereof as will be apparentfrom the description hereinafter and as set forth in the claims.
The objects of the invention are to provide a device of the character. specified which is compact, strong and durable, simple in construction and cheap to manufacture, easily adjusted and applied in use, ef-
fective in action, of a neat appearance, and which is possessed of features which make it practical and marketable.

jecting portion 8. On the top portion of the barrel 6 may be pivotally mounted a back rest 9 adapted to be moved forwardly and downwardly against the platform 3 when desired.
Pivotally mounted in the base 2 is the post 10 which passes through the bearing block 11 mounted on the base and extends upwardly centrally through the barrel. Arms 12, 13, 14 and 15,four being used in this instance although more or less might beeach have one end thereof pivotally connected with the post 10 and have their other end extending outwardly slightly beyond the side of the base 2 and provided with upwardly extending spring clips or fingers 17 thereon. To attain compactness and simplicity the construction of the pivotal connection of the arms to the post 10 is preferably such that they may lie close together in parallel in the same horizontal plane. Each arm carries a part 18 preferably of a width or diameter equal to the width of all the arms together and of a thickness equal to one-fourth of the thickness of each of the arms. As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the part 18 is joined with the arm 12 so that the outer side 19 and the lower surface 20 of the latter are respectively flush with one extremity 21 and the lower surface 22 of the former, and said part is joined with the arm 15 so that the inner side 23 and the upper surface 24 of the latter are respectively flush with the other extremity 25 and the upper surface 26 of the former, said part being joined with the arm 13 to have the outer side 27 of the latter at a distance from the plane of the extremity 21 equal to the thickness of the arm and to have the lower face 29 of the part 18 at a distance from the side 30 of the arm equal to the thickness of the part, and oined with the arm 14 to have the inner side 28 of the latter at a distance from the plane of the extremity 25 equal to the thickness of the arm and to have the upper face 31 of the part at a distance from the side 32 of the arm equal to the thickness of the part.
The part 18 of each of the arms is provided with a central opening 33 whereby it may be fitted on the post 10 to have the arms pivotally mounted thereon preferably with the part 18 of arm 12 resting on the block 11 and the part 18 of the arms 13, 14 and 15 superimposed, in the order named, on the part 18 of arm 12. Helical springs 34, 35, 36 and 37 are nested and arranged concentrically in the barrel 6 with the upper ends thereof secured in a slit 38 in the upper end portion of the post and the lower end portions thereof extending below the platform 3 and respectively secured to the arms 15, 14, 13 and 12. The base 2 may have thereon the rail 39 extending around the edge thereof and the rail may be partially cut away at one of the sides of the base to provide a shoulder 40 against which the outer end portions of the arms may bear. A head 41 may be provided on the upper end of the post 10 and it may be provided on its underside with ratchet teeth 42 which fit corresponding sockets 48 on the top 17 of barrel 6 whereby the torsion of the springs may be adjusted in common by raising the head 41 out of the sockets and turning it, in this instance, in a clockwise direction and then lowering it again to be fitted in the sockets 48.
A trip lever 44 pivoted in the slot 45 in the rail 39 may be held down by spring 46 and has one end thereof disposed below that one of the arms 12, 13,- 14 and 15 which is against the shoulder 40 and has hinged at its other end an extension 47 having remov ably connected therewith a downward eX- tension 48 carrying a finger piece 49.
From the foregoing it will be understood that when the finger piece 49 is pressed downwardly that one of the arms 12, 13, 14 and 15, which is against the shoulder 40 is raised over the latter and automatically moves over the rail 39 to the opposite side of the base where the arms are restricted from further movement by the stop 50; the remainder of the arms being held down by a spring 51 move forwardly to bring another one of them into position against the shoulder 40 when the finger piece 49 is released.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a base having a rail partially cut away to provide a shoulder, a raised platform on the base, a barrel on the platform, a post mounted on the base and passing through said barrel, arms pivotally conarms, means whereby the torsion of said springs may be adjusted at will, and means operable at will to raise the arms above said shoulder, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a base, a raised platform thereon, a barrel on the platform, a post mounted on the base and passing through said barrel, arms pivotally connected with said post, said arms adapted to lie together in parallel in the same horizontal plane, nested helical springs arranged concentrically in the barrel and secured at their upper ends to said post and severally secured at their lower ends to the arms, means whereby the torsion of said springs may be adjusted at will, a back rest pivotally connected with the top portion of the barrel, and means carried by said base for controlling the actuation of said arms, substantially as described.
