It will be seen that-with the'present ini: provements, there. can be no tendency of the centrifugal action to produce 'a' vacuum bea tween the opposed roughened surfaces and that, hence, there will be no tendency for" these faces to draw together. Moreover, as the pressures on-both .sides'of the-rotating member a; are the: same, the-latter will be perfectly balanced and will always maintain its true position so that a uniform distance between the roughened surfaces, and therefore a uniform action, is always assured.
Besides using the present improvements for emulsifying milk to extract the butter fat therefrom, it may also be used to effect the sterilization of milk and other liquids without destroying any of the nutritive qualities of the milk or'without otherwise detrimentally affecting the same, which, obviously, cannot be done by heating or the usual process of pasteurization.
Various changes may be made inthe present embodiment of the improvements without departing from the spirit of the invention. V
I claim as my invention: I
1. In an apparatus for treating milk and other liquids, the combination of a rotating member, and a casing therefor arranged to form a narrow space with the rotating member on each side thereof, said casing having an opening'through its central portion ad jacent to the rotating member to provide an exit for the treated substance. 7 2; In an apparatus for treating milk an other liquids, the combination of a rotating member formed to" permit liquid to pass through it from center to -periphery, a casing therefor arranged to form a narrow space with the rotating member on each each side thereof, the adjacent faces of the rotating member and casing being roughened and means to permit the treated substance to pass from the central portion of the space between the'members.

In'an apparatus for treatin milk and other liquids, the combination 0 a member formed to'permit liquid to pass'through it from center to periphery, and a casing therefor arranged to form a narrow space with the rotating member on each side thereof, said casing inclosing the periphery of the member, the adjacent faces of the "member and easing being roughened and the member and casing having relative rotary movement therebetween.
5. In an apparatus for treating milk and other liquids the combination of a rotating -member, a casing therefor containing two rings forming a narrow space with the rotating member on each .side thereof and leaving the center of said member exposed.
6. In an apparatus for treating milk and other liquids, the combination of a rotating member formed to'permit liquid toj'pass through it from the center to the'periphery,
