To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, EDMUND A. SCHADE and CHRISTIAN BODMER, citizens of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to an improved adjusting device for saw carriers and guides for miter boxes.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of such parts of a miter box and saw carrier as are necessary to an understanding of our invention, Fig. 2 is a front elevation partly in section. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the plane at right angles to the plane of the section of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view of a detail. Fig. 5 is a front elevation partly in section of certain parts shown in Fig. 1.
l represents the forward end of the swinging arm of a miter box. The saw guide and carrier is mounted on this arm and includes a foot 2, which preferably has a tapered projection 3 which wedges into a correspondingly tapered hole in the end of the arm 1, being held therein by a screw 4.
5 5 represent the two rods of the guide and carrier upon which is usually mounted to slide up and down, the carrier element proper, the same being indicated at 6, Fig. l, and which carrier element may be of any well known construction. The rods 5 5 are rigidly secured in a block 7 which snugly fits in a vertical transverse slot in the upper end of the foot 2. The lower front edge of the block 7 is preferably beveled as indicated, at 8.
9 is a pivot screw passing through the foot 2 and through the block 7, and upon which said block 7 may rock.
10 1Oa are adjusting pins which are screw-threaded and carried by the foot 2 at opposite sides of the pivot 9. The inner ends of the screws l0 l0a are preferably tapered to engage the beveled wall 8 of the block 7. By adjusting the screws 10 10a forward and back respectively, the block 7 may be tilted in the foot piece 2, thereby adjusting the upright position of the guide, whereby exactly the vertical position may be acquired. By this simple adjusting device, it is possible to correctly position the saw guide and carrier even though the foot piece, from one cause or another, is not so positioned in the arm l as to itself guarantee the vertical position of the rods 5 5 of the guide. Since many causes are responsible, in constructions of this character, for the faulty positioning of saw guides, it is our aim to provide a simple means whereby, if from any cause, the saw guide is found not to be positioned accurately, such position may be corrected easily and quickly. The fit of the block 7 may be so snug between the walls of the foot 2 that the pivot screw 9 may, after adjustment, be set up to clamp the two opposite sides of the carrier rigidly upon the block 7.
While we have shown the adjusting device as applied to the front end of the arm l, it is obvious that a similar adjusting device may beprovided for the saw guide and carrier mounted on the rear end of said arm.
What we claim is:
An adjusting device for miter box saw guides and carriers comprising a foot piece having a transverse slot in the upper side thereof forming two4 clamping walls, a block arranged in said slot and bearing against said clamping walls, said block being spaced apart from the bottom of said slot, a combined clamping and pivot screw passing freely through one of said clamping walls and through said block and screwing into the other clamping wall, an adjusting screw on each side of said combined pivot and clamping screw, said adjusting screws operating to tilt said block in said foot piece to the desired degree, and saw carrier and guide mechanism carried by said block.
