Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLVESTER DOUBET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to improvements in drills and relates particularly to a coal-drill, although the application of the invention may be equally as well applied to other forms of drills.
One of the objects of the present invention is in the provision of means for reducing friction and making the drill run lighter, by keeping the large bevel gear wheel on the thread-bar straight and true on said bar, so that said gear wheel will have a perfect mesh with the driving pinion at all times.
A further object of the invention is in the provision-of means for reducing friction, said means comprising a ball retainer supported within a gear-nest with the bevel gear on the thread-bar.
The invention consists essentially of a boxing composed preferably of two hinged sections, a gear-nest supported by the lower section of said boxing and provided with a bearing for the hub of a bevel gear-wheel carried on a thread-bar operating in said boxing, and to means interposed between the gear-nest and said gear on the threadbar for reducing friction during the operation of said thread-bar and for holding the gear on the thread-bar even and true on said bar, and in perfect mesh with a driving pinion carried on a stud, projecting laterally from the lower section of said boxing.
That the invention may be more readily understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a boxing and a thread-bar, showing my improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the parts seen in Fig. 1, showing the threadbar in cross section; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the boxing shown in Fig. 1; the thread-bar being omitted and the bevel gear carried thereby being shown in dotted lines;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged face view of a ball retainer and the balls therein; Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional detail showing the manner of securing the balls in said retainer, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation, somewhat similar to that shown in Fig. 8, but only showing the forward portion of the boxing in which said view illustrated the use of means integral with the gear-nest for holding the bevel gear true to its work on the thread-bar and in mesh with the bevel driving pinion, in lieu of the ball retainer, shown in Figs. 1 and 4; Fig. 7 is a longitudinal sectional view through Fig. 1 on a plane taken longitudinally through the feed screw thereof; Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view through Fig. 6 on a plane taken longitudinally through the feed screw thereof.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures.
The boxing referred to consists preferably of the upper and lower hinged sections .1 and 2, being somewhat similar to the ordinary boxings employed for use in connection with coal-drills, wherein the top section is hinged to the lower section at 3, and a pin 4: is employed, substantially in the manner seen, for locking the sections 1 and 2 together. Although not shown, the interior of the sections 1 and 2 are suitably threaded and serve as a nut to be engaged by a threadbar 5 operating in the said boxing. The removal of the pin 4: allows for the opening of the sections of said boxings,
whereby the thread-bar may be placed or removed at the will of an operator. At the rear end and extending laterally from opposite sides of the section 2 of the boxing are provided trunnions 6, having the outer flanged heads 7 as shown. By means of such trunnions, as will be understood, the boxing may be suitably supported in a bracket or some other support of a post-drill or a grip-drill. Projecting laterally from one side of the forward end of the lower section 2 of said boxing is a spindle 8, and
on this spindle is carried a pinion 9, prefwhich has an extended erably a bevel-gear, hub portion 10 which is squared as at 11, to adapt the connecting therewith of some suitable tool for operating the said pinion. And said pinion is retained in operative working position on the spindle 8, by means of a collar 12; and between the said collar said ring is and the hub of the said pinion is carried a ball retaining ring 13, which is in all respects similar to the ball retainer shown in Figs. 4 and 5, 'in which is suitably secured the balls 14 which have a rolling contact with the hub of the pinion and the collar aforesaid, serving as a ball bearing for said pinion, relieving the same of any friction on said collar and materially assisting in the smooth operation of said pinion.
15 refers generally to a gearnest which may be formed integral with or attached to the lower section 2 of the boxing, it being preferable to make said nest a part of the section 2, as shown in the drawings. Said nest consists of the forward portion 16 con-- nected with the forward end of the lower portion of the section 2 of the boxing by means of the web 17, which extends downwardly and forwardly from the boxing andmerges into the portion 16 of said nest, as shown; and from the portion 16 and extending from the opposite sides thereof are the webs 18 and 19, which are substantially U shaped as shown in Fig. 1 and connecting with the forward end of the section 2 of the boxing, the web 19, being curved clownwardly and upwardly as shown in Fig. 2 to avoid the pinion 9 as shown. The portion 16 of said nest is cut out as at 20, forming the bifurcated ears 21 and also a slotted bearing 22 in which may be detachably seated an extended hub 23, of a bevel-gearwheel 24, which is intended to be in con stant mesh with the pinion 9 when the thread-bar 5 is in working position in the hinged boxing, said thread-bar being grooved and the hub of the pinion being provided with a spline so as to adapt the bevel gear 24 when being operated, not o11l to impart power from the pinion 9 to the thread-bar 5, but also to allow the said thread-bar to have longitudinal movement through the said gear.
When the bar has been placed in the boxing and the gear 24 is in working position in the gear-nest 15 shown in Fig. 1, there is preferably interposed between the rear face of the gear and the inner face of the portion 16 of the gear-nest, and on the hub of said gear, a ball retainer indicated as 25 and a flat ring 26. The ball retainer is an annular ring adapted to be slipped over the thread-bar and the hub of the gear 24 and provided with a pair of flanges 25 between which is formed an annular groove 27, the said flanges being provided with a series of corresponding openings 28 disposed in an irregular circle as shown in Fig. 4. The flanges thereof may be made of some suitable spring metal, so that balls 29 which may be forced into the annular 'groove27 and which are made to co-incide with the openings 28 in the flanges of the ring, will be yieldingly retained in the be understood.
In the operation of the drill, the use of the balls employed in the manner shown will relieve all friction incident to the operation of the thread-bar and the gear and pinion, and the bearing furnished by said balls between the gear 24 and the flat ring 26 keeps the large gear-wheel in a true working position on said thread-bar and also in perfect mesh with the pinion at all times, the result of which is the obviation of 'any friction and materially aids the free and perfect operation and light running of said device.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings a boss 30 is shown, and although attached to or made a part of and projecting inwardly from the face of the portion 16 of the gear-nest 15, may be attached to or formed a part of the gear-wheel 24 and extend outwardly there'- from; said boss at the ears 21, preferably conforming thereto (if attached to the portion 16) and extending across the face of the portion 16 beneath the opening formed therein. Such boss is intended to take the place of the ball bearing use of the ball retaining ring 25 and the balls thereof. While the boss itself does not relieve the friction to the extent that the ball retaining ring would, yet such boss will hold the gear to its work, true on the thread-bar and in perfect mesh with said pinion.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a gear-nest for machines of the general character herein shown, but I am not aware of the provision of a gear-nest which is formed integral with the lower sect-ion of a hinged boxing, as shown. I do know that they have been made in different forms attached to a one part sleeve forming the nut for the thread-bar. With the arrangement I have shown a gear-nest is provided which fulfils provided by the the requirements of such an element and the disposition of the same is such that when the top section of the hingedboxing is opened the thread-bar and parts thereof may be very easily removed or replaced, the arrangement of the nest not interfering with such removal or replacing of the parts indicated as is found in the gear-nests which have been heretofore used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desireto secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. Ina device of the character described,
the combination of a boxing composed of hinged sections, the lower section at one end provided with a gear-nest, formed integrally with said section and composed of a forward portion spaced a suitable distance from said boxing and having a slotted face at its upper end adapted to serve as a bearing for an extended hub portion of a gear to be retained within said nest, and laterally extending webs connected with the body of said nest and united with said lower section for bracing said nest.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a boxing composed of hinged sections, the lower section at one 'end provided with a gear-nest formed integrally with said section and composed of a forward portion spaced a suitable distance from said boxing and having a slotted face formed between bifurcated ears adapted to serve as a bearing for an extended hub portion of a gear to be retained within said nest, and substantially U shaped portions connecting the opposite sides of the body of said nest with said lower section for bracing said nest.
3. In a device. of the character described, the combination of a boxing composed of upper and lower hinged sections, a gear-nest formed integrally with and disposed at one end of said lower section of said boxing, the same consisting of a vertical wall spaced a suitable distance from said boxing and having a slotted bearing at its upper end adapted to receive and serve as a bearing for an extended hub portion of a gear, a web extending downwardly and forwardly from said lower section and merging into the said wall, and webs extending in opposite directions from said front wall and at their opposite ends merging into said lower Copies of this patent may be obtained for section, said webs forming a closure for the gear aforesaid.
4. In a drill, the combination of a boxing, a thread-bar operating through said boxing, a gear on said thread bar, means for operating said gear, a gear-nest for said gear, to retain the gear in operative relation with its operating means and said thread-bar, said nest composed of a front wall connected to the end of the boxing by a lower axially alined web, laterally extending U shaped webs connecting the opposite sides of said wall with the opposite sides of said boxing, and said front wall of said nest provided with upwardly extending bifurcated ears which extend up above the axial center of said thread-bar.
5. In a. drill, the combination of a boxing composed of two hinged sections, a threadbar operating through said sections, a gear carried on said thread-bar, a spindle projecting radially from the lower section, a pinion on said spindle in mesh with said gear, a gear-nest for said gear consisting of a vertically disposed portion connected with said lower section by a web, laterally disposed braces for said vertical portion connected with said lower section, one of said laterally disposed braces being curved downwardly and upwardly so as not to interfere with said pinion, and said vertically disposed portion provided with bifurcated ears extending up above the axial center of said thread-bar.
