Description

niid gisten @anni otitis.
Letters Patent No. 101,317, dated March`29, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN Przsssnms.
The- Schedule referred to in these Lettera Pa'tent and making part of thev same.
and construct the same, reference being had to the zic-- colnpanying drawing which `makes part of this speciication, and represents a perspective view of the instrument.
The nature of my invention consists in supporting the uterus by means of a springl nent in V-shape, and provided at each end with a-pivote-d cushion for the proper adjustment in the vagina.
The intention of this instruruentis to support the uterus in cases of prolapsus uter, by giving its natural, but pre-lapsed support in the vagina, an artiiiciai one by means of spring-power; and so as to prevent any injury of the folds bf the vagina in which the cushions find their place, and, so as to facilitate and simplify the application and adjustment of the instrument, the cushions are pivoted.
A, in the drawing, represents a bent spring of V- shape, the ends being bent outwardly alittle more than the body of the spring, so as to conform as nearly as possible to the shape of the uterus. This spring I prefer to construct of horn, as this material is not liable to corrosion, but any non-corrosive material will answer.
lThe ends of this spring pass into grooves b of cush- ,ions B of suitable shape, which 'are centrally pivoted to the ends, so ae'to have a rotary reciprocating motion with the pivots as their centers. These cushions are made of any suitable material and proper shape.
The application and operation of my improved supporter are as follows:
The cushions B being t'ijrned as shown in dotted lines, the instrument, held between the thumb and first iinger, i's passed by the patient as far into the vagina as possible, scfl that the cushions are at the right and left of the uterus, and, as they are pivoted, they must necessarily pass into the upper folds of the vagina, regulating their own proper position.
- The cushions being of semicircular shape, no danger ot' perforation of the tissues of the vagina by their contiguous portion can occur. The bend of the spring naturally directs itself toward the os pubis, and re mains in that position.
As the cushions are pivoted, the motions o f the wearer of the instrument will not ltend to press the same against or irritate the uterus, urethra, or rectum, as the instrument adjusts itself to every motion. It is as easily removed from the vagina as lt is adj listed in. the same, by merely seizing the bend, and thus removing it without pain.
Having thus described my invention,
`What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A uterine support consisting of the V-shaped spring A, and pivoted cushions B, arranged and operating ,Y
substantially as herein described.
