CURTAIN-POLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS J ANKowsKI, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Poles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to curtain poles, and the objects of my invention are to obviate the necessity of using rings and pins for detachably connecting the upper ends of curtains to a pole, and to furnish the curtain pole with simple and efiective means for holding curtains without injuring the same.

Further objects of my invention are to provide a curtain pole with a detachable section that can be positively locked in engagement with the main body of the pole, and to provide a curtain pole that is durable and highly etlicient for the purposes for which it is intended.

I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the curtain pole, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of a detachable section of the pole, Fig. 3 is a similar view of a portion of the pole showing a slide carried thereby, Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the pole showing an end of the slide, Fig. 5 is a plan of the slide end of the curtain pole with the slide thereof removed, Fig. 6 is a plan of the curtain pole showing the sections and slide in position, Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a portion of the curtain pole, Fig. 8 is a perspective View of one end of a detachable section, Fig. 9 is a cross sectional view of the pole. Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a retaining rod, and Fig. 11 is an elevation of a pole.

A pole in accordance with this invention comprises a plurality of parts adapted to be assembled to provide a cylindrical structure and the main section is designated 1 and is semi-cylindrical for the greater part of its length. shoulder 3 and this shoulder has a vertical groove 4. The opposite end of the section 1 has a longitudinally dovetailed tongue 5, and the section 1, between the inner end of said tongue and the shoulder 3, has a longitudinal groove 6 with the wall 7 thereof of a greater height than the wall 8, for a purpose that will presently appear. The height of the wall 8 is reduced by cutting away said wall for a distance of a less length than the groove 6, thereby providing surfaces 9 that are in the same plane with the upper surface of the wall 7 The reference numeral 10' denotes a semicylindrical detachable section having the ends thereof provided with beveled tongues 11 and 12 and the tongue 11 is adapted to engage-in the groove 4. The flat side of the section 10 has a longitudinal groove 13 adapted to confront the groove 6. The vertical wall 14 of the groove 13 engages the vertical wall 7 of the groove 6 and the vertical wall 15 of the-groove 13 is cut away, as at 16 to cooperate with the cut away portion 8 of the main section 1 in providing a longitudinal slot, best shown in Fig. 9. The cut away portion 16 of the wall 15 is of a less length than the groove 13, thereby providing fiat surfaces 17 adapted to engage the fiat surfaces 9.

Slidably mounted upon the tongue 5 of the section 1 is a semi-cylindrical slide 18 and the inner end of this slide has a groove 19 to receive the tongue 12 of the section 10, said slide having the end thereof beveled to engage the beveled end of the section 10 and retain said section upon the main section.

The reference numeral 20 denotes a rod adapted to loosely fit in the grooves 6 and 13 and hold the upper edges 21 of a curtain 22, the curtain 22 extending through the slot provided by the cut away portions 8 and 16 of the sections 1 and 10 respectively.

The pole in its entirety is preferably made of wood whereby it can be finished to present a neat appearance, and as a further fastening means for the section 10, the section 1 is provided with a pivoted hook 23 adapted to be swung into engagement with an eye 24 carried by the section 10, said hook being curved to conform to the curvature of the pole.

What I claim'is:

1. A curtain pole comprising a semi-cyhaving a longitudinal groove formed therein, a detachable semi-cyllndrlcal sectlon hav ing the ends thereof provided With tongues with one of said tongues fitting in the groove of said shoulder, said detachable section 7 having a longitudinal groove formed thereon confronting the groove of the first mentioned section, a semi-cylindrical slide slidably mounted upon the tongue of the first mentioned section and having the inner end thereof provided With a groove to receive the other tongue of said detachable section, and a rod arranged in the longitudinal grooves of said sections and adapted to support the upper edges of a curtain.

2. A curtain pole comprising a semi-cylindrical section having a cylindrical portion at one end thereof, and a longitudinal tongue at the opposite end thereof, said section having a longitudinal groove formed therein, a s'emi-cylindrical guide slidably mounted upon said longitudinal tongue, a detachable section adapted to be retained in engagement with the first mentioned section by one end thereof engaging the cylindrical portion of said section and. the opposite end thereof engaging said slide, said detachable section having a longitudinal groove formed therein confronting the groove of the first mentioned section, and a rod arranged in the grooves of said sections and adapted to hold the upper edges of curtains.
