Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMPsoN BACHRACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Display-Cabinets, of which the following is a specication.

My invention relates particularly to display cabinets adapted to be placed upon counters, show-cases, etc., to contain and display small articles of merchandise, such as collar-buttons and other small articles of jewelry.

My primary object is to provide a cabinet of the character indicated of simple and improved construction and thoroughly adapted to its purpose.

The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a broken front elevational view of a display cabinet constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a section taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1, the dotted lines showing the closure of the cabinet in the open position; and Fig. 3, a broken perspective sectional view showing the manner in which the curved glass sectors employed are united and framed.

In the construction illustrated, A represents a half-circular base upon which are mounted half-circular tiers 1 of receptacles 2; and B, a closure composed of a back section 3 joined by hinges 4 to a back-section 5 which rises from thev rear upper margin of the base A, said back-section 3 carrying a curved glass wall 6 which is preferably approximately in the form of a quarter of a spherical shell. The glass wall is composed of curved sectors 7 which are united at their meeting edges by meridional metallic con necting members 8, the corresponding free edges of the flanking sectors 7 being bound by meridional members 8a. The members 8 and 8a meet and are united to a cap-member 9 having a shank 10 connected with the central upper portion of the back-section 3, it being understood that the back-section 3 has a curved upper edge, whose curvature is continued at the ends of the back-section 5, the curved edge of both members taken together forming approximately a half-circle. The meridional ribs 8 and 8a are joined at their lower ends by a half-circular rib 11,

so that the glass segments are well supported and framed. The member 9 carries an upwardly-projecting stud 12 upon which is mounted a handle 13, which, in the illustration given, is in the form of a collar-button thek base of which rests upon the member 9.

The tiers 1 of the receptacles are located in successively elevated planes from front to rear, being grouped in front of and curved about an axis corresponding approximately with the center line of the back of the structure. The back-section 3 may be composed of a board 14 and a mirror 15 disposed in front of said board and having its reflecting surface turned forwardly, so that the contents of the receptacles will be reflected from the mirror. The base A has a curved projecting margin 16 which is outside of or in front of the lower tier 1 o f receptacles and has on its upper surface a half-annular felt pad 17 upon which the lower edge of the frame of the glass portion of the closure rests. Se pred to the backsection 5 is a bracket or vrackets 18 having a rearwardly-inclined, felt-covered upper surface 19 adapted to support the closure when the latter is in the open position, thus providing for ready access to all of the receptacles of the cabinet.

Fig. 3 shows one manner in which the glass sectors may be united by the ribs 8. According to the construction shown, two U-shaped binding-members 20 are employed which embrace the adjacent edges of the glass members and have their backs united by solder 21. The lower bindingmember 11 is composed of a similar U-shaped member 22 having upturned ianges and to whose outer surface is soldered a wire member 23. The marginal ribs 8a are equipped` with bracket-members, or clips, 24", which have downturned projections which embrace the rear surface of the back-section 3 to which they are secured. Thus, the frame o f the glass portion of the closure is firmly united to the back-section 3 by the clips 24 and clip 9.

It may be noted that owing to the hinging of the back-section which carries the glass cover at some distance above the lower edge of the glass cover, the structure is more evenly balanced when in the open position, so that the danger of the structure tipping backward is obviated. Inasmuch as the device is likely to be placed near the rear edge of a counter or show-case, this is regarded as an important feature. It is noted, also, that the receptacle-structure rises some distance above the line of hinging of the cover-carrying back-section. Moreover, the framing carried by the back-section 3 is adapted to contribute great strength to the glass-cover.

The frame for the glass cover may be constructed in any desired manner, that illustrated being used by preference.

The form and construction of the receptacles mounted on the base A may be according to fancy or desire, the foregoing detailed description having been given for olearness of understanding only. What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A Cabinet comprising a base, a fixed backsection, a movable back-section hinged to said fixed back-section some distance above the base, a cover united to the free edge-portion of said movable back-section and having its lower margin extending beneath the line of hinging of said movable back section and adapted to bear upon said base, and a stop for limiting the rearward movement of the cover.
