Description

Letters Patent No. 101,287 dated March 29, 1870.
FEED-WATER HEATER POR LOCOMOTIVES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
IIb-all persons to lwhom these presents ymay come:
Be it known that I, ISRAEL PUTNAM MAGooN, of St. J ohnsbnry, of the county of Caledonia, ofthe State of Vermont, have made a new and useful invention or AImprovement in Locomotive Steam-Engines; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanyin g drawings, of which- Figurcs l and 2 are vertical sections of the smokebox and chimney of a locomotive engine with my invention applied thereto.
Figure is a top view of the saddle at the bottom of the chimney. 4
This saddle A, instead of4 being formed in the ordinary manner, viz., with a at horizontal bottom, has two semicircular depressions or cavities, a a, arranged on opposite sides of the steam-chimney B, which goes `through and is led'upward from the saddle and opens ont ofthe smoke-arch or box C.
Thebottoms b b of these cavities are inclined in op posite directions, and there is an opening, e, made through the side of the steam-chimney, so as to lead ii'om each cavity a into it.
The exhaustfpipe is shown at D, and the smoke or steam-chimney at E. The latter rests directly on the saddle and is arranged concentrically with the steamchimney. l
The said steam-chimney B is surmouuted by a deiiecting-bonnet, F, which serves to throw or deflect downward into a hollow conical frustum, G, open both at top and at bottom, which encompasses the steamchimney, and is arranged in the smoke-chimney, in manner as represented, the steam and smoke which may escape from the top of the steam-chimney.
Withiu'the said frustum G is a helical coil of pipe,
` H, Whose ends open through the lower' part of the smoke-chimney.
One terminus of the coil is to communicate with the boiler, and the other with the force-pump of the engine, the same being so as to cause the water from the tank, in its passage to the boiler, to be heated by the coil exposed within the frustum G to the. smoke and steam which may be thrown therein.
There is a space, s, around the coil and between it and lthe frustum G, the same heilig to enable the smoke and the waste steam defiected into the frustum to freely act on the outer surface of the coil.
The steam driven into the exhausopipe passes with the smoke directly into the steam-chimney, and striking the deiiect-or at its top, will be deiiected downward into the frustnm G and against the coil and out of the lower end of the -i`rustum G, the smoke and steam will rush into and up through the smoke-chixnney or space aroundl the frustum G, and thence through the wire netting or cap I ofthe top of the said chimney.
Any sparks or cinders which may fall down upon the saddle, or into either of the. cavities a a thereof, will be drawn out of the cavity and through its escapei hole c, the position ofthe said escape-holes being such as to prevent the steam from being driven through them while .passing from the exhaust-pipe into the chimney or flue B.
The cinders which may escape through lthe openings c c will fall into the smoke-box or finally be consumed.
By means of the internal frustum G, arranged and combined with the outer or smoke-chimney, the steam4 chimney, the deiiector, and the coil, such coil will be heated to bet-ter advantage than it would be were there no such internal frustum about it and in the main chimney.
I therefore claim my invention the arrangement and combination of the internal 'rustum G with the steam-chimney or pipe B, the deflector F, the heat-- ing-coil H, and the main or smoke-chimney E.
I. P. MAGOON.
