FIREPR-OOF DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1911.
Application filed August 8, 1910. Serial No. 576,110.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, AXEL R. J ONES, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in metallic or fire proof doors and the invention has for its primary object a simple construction of door of this character which may be easily made of sheet metal and which will be durablc and well able to stand the effects of heat without warping.
WVith this and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a face view of a fire proof door constructed in accordance with my invention; and Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views on the line 22 and 3-3, respectively, of Fig. 1. Fig. d is a sectional perspective view of details hereinafter specifically described.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
My improved fire proof door embodies stiles and head and foot portions which constitute the rails, the main body portion of the door being composed of metallic plates 1 and 2 that are pressed or banked down at the middle to form a panel portion, the said plates being spaced from each other, as best illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, so as to receive a fire proof filling. Each of these two plates is provided at one side of the panel portion of the door with stile portions 3, 41 and 5 that are substantially of rectangular form, the portion 5 of each plate being joined to the inwardly pressed portion 6 of the adjoining plate by a lock joint 7 of any desired number of walls, the lock joints be ing oppositely disposed, as best illustrated in Fig. 3, that is, one being on one face of the door and the other on the opposite face.
The top and bottom rails of the door are each composed of sheet metal strips 8 and 9, said strips embracing the upper and lower edges of the plates 1 and 2 and the inner edges of the strips 8 and 9 being returned inwardly on themselves to form hooked flanges 10 that are engaged by clips or lugs 11 that are preferably struck up from the plates 1 and 2, as best illustrated in Fig. 2.
The top and bottom edges of the plates 1 and 2 are turned outwardly in a lateral direction, as indicated at 12, tubes v13 being engaged with the flanges thus formed and rivets 13 passing through the tubes and the strips 8 and 9 near the outer edges of the latter so as to securely connect the parts together. The edges of the strips 8 and 9 are extended outwardly a short distance beyond the tube 13 so as to form flanges .14; to which filler strips 15 are connected by screws or other fastening device. 15 designates inner filler strips, preferably of angle metal that are interposed between the strips 8 and 9 and the plates 1 and 2, as shown, so as to assist in reinforcing the parts, the filler strips 15 being secured by rivets to the plates 1 and 2, respectively.
It is to be understood that the body portion of the door may be filled by any substance or material which is a poor conductor of heat, the asbestos filling 16 and cork filling 17 being illustrated for this purpose in the present instance.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple construction of fire proof door which may be easily formed out of sheet metal, the parts being securely held together with relatively few joints and the exterior wall of the door being practically devoid of any projections, the same presenting a uniform and smooth appearance, while at the same time not detracting from the rigidity of the door.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A door of the character described, comprising stiles and a panel constructed of plates disposed in spaced relation to each other and secured together, top and bottom sections consisting of strips embracing said plates and formed at their inner edges with inturned hook flanges, the plates being formed on their outer faces with clips engaging said flanges and the plates being further formed at their outer edges With laterally disposed outturned flanges, transversely extending tubes resting on said lastnanied flanges, rivets extending through said tubes and secured to the outer edges of said strips, such edges extending slightly beyond the tubes, filler strips held in between said last-named edges, and angular reinforcing strips secured to the plates and interposed between the latter and the strips,
