Application filed October 11. 1911. Serial No. 654,190,
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that l, \Vailrnn fl. (lniLLi-LY, a ('itizen ot the United States of Aineriea, residing at bniithton. in the county of West roreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented eertain new and uselnl Ifll1)lt)\'t!- nn-nts in Metallio Ties and i'tail-l asteners, of which the following is a speeifieation, ret'erenet heing had therein to the aeeonr panyingg; drawing.
This invention relates toinetallie ties and rai-l fasteners. and the primary ohjeet o't any invention is to furnish a tie ot' the L hean'; eonstruetion with novel tastenta's 'for rttaining' rails thereon and in alinenient to preserve the gage ot' a traelt.
Another ohjeet of this invention is to proride 'lasteners that allow for the expansion and eon'trzu'rtion ot' rails and insure a positire Fastening ot' rails without resorting to a eoniplimted eonstruetion or a eohstruetion that is liahle to injury by ordinary use.
A further oh ieet of this invention is to aeeoniplish the ahove results by a lneehanieaf eonstruetion that is tjlurahle, easy to install and highly eflieient tor the purposes for whieh it is intended.
llith the above and other objects in View the intention resides in the novel eonstruetion. eoinhiuation and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter speeitieally deserihed and then elainied.
teferenee will now be had to the drawing \\'herein:
Figure l is a side eteration of" the tie showing a rail mounted thereon. Fig. .2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 a perspta'tive View of a portion of the tie. and Fig. -t is a per u i't'ire \ltfW o'f'a detached 'f astener.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a tie ot' the I-heain eonstruetion having base flanges 2 and top flanges 3. said top flanges heingr ot a greater depth than the hase flanges 12. The top tittllgtiS adjaeent to the ends of the tie are eut away to provide rail seals l and outer fasteners 47 adapted to extend over the outer hase flanges (3 of rails 7 arranged upon the seats -f-, these outer fast'euers deter mining the gage ot' the tl'tlt'h. The top thing-es I; at the inner edges of the seats t are further eut away to provide inner fus tener seats 8 and tongue ways 9. The outer edges of' he seats 8 and the tongue' nu s 9 are straightv while the inner edges ot the seats 8 are heveltal toward the (enter of' the tie to provide int-lined hereled walls 10.
[)etaehahly mounted upon the seats 8 are inner fasteners if, said fasteners having the inner ends thereof beveled. as at 1; to engage the walls It), and the outer ends oi said fasteners extend over the inner hase flanges 13 ot' the rails T and are st aight. The tasteners ha \o depernling, tongues If extending: into h nglu ways 9, said tout ue heing angle larly di'iposed to protrude under the inner flanges 1.; ol' the rails i'. The fasteners fl are eonneefed tog g'ether hr a transverse bolt 15 and a nut lti, said holt drawing the 'lasteners toward the longitudinal axis of the lie whereby said fasteners will hare a wedging aetion that tends to hind said tashmers hetween the inner flanges 12; and the walls It), with the tongues t-l preventing vertieal tlisplaetanent of said fasteners.
it is apparent trout the foregoing that the inner tasteuerz-i ran he asilv and uiehly as:--:einliled upon the ti to rigidly hold the rails thereotn said 'f'asteu rs not interfering with the tainping or plaeing of the tie in the liallast oi a road lied.
l. in a nietallhlie and rail lt istener, the eonihinalion with rails. n: a tie of the I- ln-ani eoustruetion having the top flanges eut awa t to provide seats tor said rails and outer l'asttui rs engaging the outer flanges of said rails. the top of said tie heipg' fur ther eut away to providi an inner fastener seat and tougrue-wars. with said fastener seats presenting); int-lined het'eled Walls, inner tast'eners mounted upon said seats and having a wed ring aetion hetween the inner flanges of" said rails and the walls of said seats. tongues earried hy said fasteners and extending; into said tongg nedray under the inner flanges of said rails, and means ar-- ranged transversely of' said inner fasteners for retaining said fasteners up n the seats of said tie.
In a metallic tie and rail tastenen the eonihination with rails, of a tie ot the L heani eonstruetion having: the top thereof provided with seats for said rails and outer fasteners to engage the outer hase flanges of said fails, the top of said tie being further flanges to said rails, and bolts connecting cut away to provide seats for inner rail fassaid fasteners. 10 toners, inner rail fasteners arranged upon In testimony whereof I affix my signature said seats and having a Wedging action toin the presence of two Witnesses.
Ward each other to bind said fasteners upon I WALTER H. CRILLEY.
