Description
S. PONGO.
ROCKING HORSE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE'I, 1011i ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 19, 1911.
WIT/V5853? w I 0pm.,
of New York provide UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
sIG-MUND PONGO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ROCKING-HORSE.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, SIoMuNn Pena-o, a subjeet of the King of Hungary, and resident of the city of New York, in the county and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Im )rovements in Rocking-l Iorses, of which the t'oL lowing is i. specification.
The present irn'ent'ion relates to an :n'nuso- 10 meat device, and more particularly to that class in Whieh the user is supported and earried on a body in sinmlation ot' a horse or other animal.
()ne of the objects of the invention is to a. simple support for a holiby-lterse, or other similar device, in combination with an etlicient motor operatedmechanism for imparting rocking motion to said support and the device carried thereby.
Another objeet of the invention is to pro do. an innin'oved sup mrt ot the character described which will hold the body ot the ln'ihby-horse, or other similar device, in a substantially horizontalposition during the roelcing movement.
liVith these and. other objects in view, which will appear as the nature ot the invention is better understood, the same eonsists in the combimititm, arrangement and construction, ot? parts hereina'l'tcr tully described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the aeemupanying draw ings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and pro 'iortion ot the several parts and minor details ot eonstruetion without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any oi the advantages ot the invention.
One of the many possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 2 Figure l is a side elevation, partly in seetion, of the invention complete, and Fi is a front elevation of a detail of ermstruotion.
allel rods 5 5 and 5 5 res )GCt-lVtl Y whieh support a body made in simulation of a horse, although it Will be easily seen that the Specification of Letters Patent.

mechanism may a s well be adapted to any other animal form or sent. The lower ends of the rods 5 and 5 are provided with eyes, in management with cross rods (3, (l, which are fixedly attarhed to a base 7, the latter being secured to the floor by screws 8, 8, or otherwise. in the base are provided recesses t), t), which will permit of an oscillating motion of the rods 5 and 5 upon the transverse rods (1, t5, which latter net as pivots for said rods. The upper ends ol the rods and 5. which project a eonsiderable distance above the platform 1, are pivoted at it) and 10', respectively. to lugs ll. and ll, whirh are fastened to the body portions of the hobby'horses l2 and 1;
Oscillating motion is imparted to the supporting rods 5 and 5" from a rotary shaft 13, which is journaled in ubeariug l1, and has keyed or otherwise attarhed thereto eranlts l5 and 15, the eranlt pins .16 and 16 of whieh are engaged by connecting rods 17 and 17', respectively, the other ends of which are pivotally attaehed at 18 and 18', respectively. to one of the pair of eonneeting rods 5 and Ti. resperlively. Rotary motion is imparted to the shal't 13 from a motor it), for instant-r an eleelric motor. A pulley 20 is mounted upon the shalt of this motor, and oi'er this pulley runs a belt ll, engaging also a pulley 32, which latter is keyed, or otherwise secured to the shaft .13.
The base 7 is provided upon its ends with upwardly extending projections 22 .223, which earry thereon inclined pins Q-l, J-l, upon which are shil'lably arranged perforated plates 25, Between these, plates and the projections are loeuted springs 26, it; for a purpose to be described.
it will be observed that the supporting rods 5' and i) must be arranged at a distance from each other \vhieh would allow two riders to oreupy the hobby-horses l2 and 12 without interfering with each other as the said hobby-horses are being rocked. Fur thermore it should be observed. that, while herein only twohorses have been shown, it is obvious that a large number of the same could be arranged in a row, and driven from a single rotary driving shaft.
The operation of the device is as follows: The riders mountthe horses one after the other, when the said horses are brought as near as possible to the plane of the platform .1. The motor 19 is then started, whereby rotary motion will be imparted to Patepted Dec. 19, 1911..
. be observed that the horses will move one behind the other. More particularly, if one is in its lowermost position, the other will be in its highest position. As one of the horses reaches its lowermost position, one of its supporting rods will compress the springs 26 above decribed, whereby shocks and jars will be prevented, and, on the other hand, the backward movement of the horses facilitated and aided.
It is to be noted that the horses will always remain in their substantially hori-- and 5 project a considerable distance above the plane of the platform 1. If the horses were not kept in horizontal positions, the riders might be thrown from the same in the rocking movement.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base, of two parallel supporting bars pivoted thereto, a body made in simulation of an animal pivotally attached to the upper ends of said supporting bars, a rotary shaft, a crank keyed to said shaft, and a connecting rod between said crank and one of said supporting bars, piubistantially as and for the purpose speci- 2. In a device of the character described, the combination witha base, of two parallel supporting bars pivoted thereto, a body made in simulation of an animal attached by two independent pivots to the upper ends of said supporting bars, a rotary shaft, a
crank keyed to said shaft, and a connecting rod between said crank and one of said supporting bars, substantially as and for the purpose specified,
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base, of two parallel supporting bars pivoted thereto, a body made in simulation of an animal pivotally attached to the upper ends of said supporting bars, a rotary shaft, a crank keyed to' said shaft, a connecting rod between said crank and one of said supporting bars,; whereby said supporting bars and the body attached thereto are rocked, and resilient means upon said base adapted to be com pressed by said bars when the latter reach their outer positions in both directions, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 4. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a base, of two parallel supporting bars pivoted thereto, a body made in simultation of an'animal attached by two independent pivots to' the upper ends 7 of said supporting bars, a rotary shaft,- a
crank keyed to said shaft, a connecting rod between said crank and one of said supporting bars, whereby said supporting bars and the body attached thereto are rocked, and
resilient means upon said base adapted to be compressed by said bars when the latter reach their outer positions in botlrdirec
