To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Grundy and State of Missouri, 'have invented new and useful Boiler-Flues, of which the following `is a specification.
. It is the aim of the present invention to through the Hue sheets or draw them through the same, and to this end, one of the boiler Hue sheets is formed with Hue end recelving openings around the edges of which areshoulders against which the` ends of the boiler Hues abut, a packing gasket being interposed between the said ends of theboiler Hues and the said shoulders at the edges of the openings. The shoulders in the edges of the` openings are formed by counterboring the Hue sheets from their inner faces so that the shoulders are presented in the same dithimble being shown in end elevation, and
rection as are the inner facesA of the said sheets, and consequently such longitudinal expansion of the Hues as would ordinarily result in their being forced rearwardly through the Hue sheets is eHectually checked or obviated.
Another feature of the invention resides in the provision of a thimble which is fitted into the ends of the Hues and `4which eH`ectually protects' the said ends of the Hues, the packing gasket, andthe edges of the openings into which the ends of the Hues are Htted, from such extremes of temperature as would tend to cause abnormal expansion or contraction of the elements mentioned.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view showing two Hues and two Hue sheets with which the Hues are assembled, one Hue being shown in position prior to the insertion of the protecting thimble thereinto and t-he other Hue being shown completely assembled. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of a portion of one Hue sheet and that end v'of the Hue into which the projecting thimble is inserted, the said ends of the Hues are,

In the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates the rear Hue sheet of a boiler-and the Irumeral 6 indicates the front Hue sheet thereof or more specifically stated that sheet which forms onewall of the smoke-box of the boiler furnace. The boiler Hues are indicated by the numeral 7.
As is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the rear Hue sheet 5 is bored with openings 8 which extendentirely through the said sheet and subsequent to the boring of these openings, is counterbored as at 9, the counterbore extending from the `forwardly presented faceof the sheet inwardly to a point near the rear face of the .sheet whereby an annular shoulder 10 is afforded at the edge of each opening 8 in the sheet. Also as clearly shown'in the said figure of the drawings, the counterbore 9 is threaded and the rear ends of the Hues 7 are alsov threaded exteriorlyas at 11 and the said when being assembled with the rear Hue sheet 5,. threaded into the counterbore 9 in the said Hue sheet and abut at their said ends each against a pack- 2 butlooking ing gasket 12 which is disposed between the` said ends of the Hue and the shoulder lO'of the corresponding'Hue end receiving open`4`v ing, this packing gasket being preferably of brass although any other material may be employed as may be found expedient. After each Hue and its respective packing gasketV have been assembled with the rear boiler Hue sheet 5, the end of the Hue, the said gasket, and the edge of the opening 8v are interiorly rolled so as to present a smooth interior surface and further to slightly exy pand the Hue at the said end thereof and to cause a snug Ht of the packing gasket. After the ends of the Hues have been rolled as above stated, a thimble 13 is driven into the rear end of each Hue and is overturned at its outer end as at 14, in the usual manner, this thimble projecting into the Hue to such degreev as to cover the interior surface of the Hue at the said rear end thereof, the inner edge of the packing gasket 12, and the inner ,i or annular edge of the shoulder 10. It will be understood that by inserting this Hue thimble 13 into the end of each Hue, the said end of each Hue, its respective packing gasket 12, and the edge of the opening in the boiler ue sheets are all effectually protected from sudden abnormal changes in temperature and that consequently abnormal expansion and contraction of the several elements will not be liable to occur. Furthermore, the thimble protects or tends to prevent to a considerable degree the burning out of the flues and gaskets. At their forward ends (their ends which open into the smoke-box of the boiler furnace) the flues 7 project through openings 15 which are formed through the forward boiler flue sheet 6 and at their ends beyond the forward face of the said sheet, they bein rolled after their engagement through the s eet whereby to secure a water-tight fit. The said forward endsw of the flues are formed each with a plurality of d iametrieally oppositely dis-4 posed notches 16, in which may be engaged a suitable tool which may be rotated for the purpose of rotating the iues to tighten their engagement of their rear ends in the threaded counterbores 9 in the rear flue sheets 5.
From the foregoing description of the invention, it will be understood that as far as lthe same concerns the manner in which the lues are assembled with the rear flue sheets 5, the abutment of the flue ends against the shoulders 10 or more specifically speaking against the packing gasket which is interposed between their said ends and the said shoulders, insures against longitudinal expansion of the said flues such as would force their-said rear ends through the ue sheets and beyond the rear face thereof, the shoulders 10 arresting any such tendency in an effectual manner.
It will further be understood that the {iues may be more readily assembled with the flue sheets and atconsiderably less expense in the manner disclosed in the drawings and heretofore described than bythe present methods of assembling in which the ends'of the flues are overturned.
It will still further be understood that by forming the forward ends of the flues with the notches 16, means is provided whereby the lues may be quickly and easily tightened.
What is claimed is.
1. In boiler construction a iue sheet formed with an opening having a shoulder at its edge presented toward the inner face of the sheet, a packing gasket disposed withinthe opening and against the shoulder, a flue threaded into the opening `and abutting at its end against the said gasket, and a thimble pressed into the opening of the sheet beyond the gasket, the outer end of the thimble being spun to cover the rim of the opening in the sheet.
2. In boiler construction, a flue sheet formed with an opening having a shoulder at its edge and presented toward the inner face of the sheet, a packing gasket disposed within the opening and against the shoulder, a flue threaded into the opening and bearing at its end against the said packing gasket,
the flue being formed at its opposite end A with a plurality of notches, and a thimble pressed into the opening of the sheet beyond the gasket, the outer end of the thimble being spun to cover the rim of the opening in the sheet.
