WALL-PAPER-DISPLAY FRAME.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL SHAFFER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Middletown, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVall-Paper-Display Frames, of which the followin is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to what are known as screens, forms or frames for displaying or showing wall-paper and which are usually hinged to an upright support and may be swung back and forth so as to display or show the wall-paper, sheets of which are secured to both sides thereof; and the object of the invention is to provide a frame of this class which will not be drawn out of shape by the paper when it contracts, but will retain its proper form at all times and under all conditions.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following s ecification, of which the accompanying rawin forms a part, in which the separate parts 0 my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters 1n each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wallpaper display frame and showin the same hinged to a support and also showing a sheet of wall-paper mounted therein or secured thereto, part of the construction being broken away; Fig. 2 a partial transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and; Fig. 3 a partial longitudinal or vertical section on the line 3-3 of 1.

In the practice of my invention I provide a rectangular outer or supporting frame a which is hinged to a suitable upright support I) as shown at N. The frame a is preferably composed of wood and comprises side bars a and end bars a, and said frame is provided centrally with a transverse brace a and a longitudinal brace a, and the braces a and a are of less transverse thickness than the side and end frame members a and a, and the ends of the said braces are countersunk in the side and end frame members as shown at a". I also connect with the inner side of the side and end frame members a and a, respectively, cleats c and d said cleats c and d being arran ed in pairs as clearly shown in Figs. 2 an 3, and the Specification of Letters Patent.

cleats c and d are connected with the frame members a and a by headed screws e which are also preferably arranged in pairs. The screws 6 are passed loosely through the cleats c and d into the frame members, and said cleats are movable on said screws, and mounted on said screws between the heads thereof and the cleats are spiral springs c. It is to be understood that there are two cleats 0 connected to each side bar above the brace a and also two cleats 0 connected to the same below said brace, and that there are in like manner two cleats (Z connected to each end bar of the frame on each side of the brace at. These cleats are shorter than the side and end bars of the frame in order to permit inward movement on the screws 6 against the tension of the spring e The two cleats at any one point are parallel with each other and are easily accessible on each side of the frame. The cleats in one and the same vertical plane form what may be termed an auxiliary frame and said frames are movable independently of each other and of the main outer or supporting frame and it will also be seen that different parts of the same auxiliary frame are movable inde endently of each other.

11 practice, I secure to the outer sides of the cleats c and d strips f of cloth or any suitable fibrous material, and the sheets 9 of wall-paper to be displayed are secured to the fabric or fibrous strips f. The connection of the strips f of cloth or fibrous material with the cleats c and d is preferably made by means of a suitable paste, and the sheets 9 of wall-paper are also secured to the fibrous strips f by means of paste, and when the frame is constructed in this manner any contraction of the sheets of wall-paper will draw the cleats c and d inwardly on the screws e, as will be readily understood, and the main frame consisting of the parts a and a will not be drawn out of shape or twisted or distorted by the said contraction of the sheets of wall-paper.

In devices of this class as heretofore constructed it has been customary to secure the sheets of wall-paper directly to the sides and ends of the main frame and when the sheets of wall-pa er contract, the said frame is drawn out o shape, but with my improvement the frame remains in proper form at all times.

The cleats c and d or the separate pairs thereof taken together, are of the same thickness as the braces a and a and when the sheets of wall-paper are secured in or to the frame as shown and described they are smooth and even throughout the dimensions of the frame. It will thus be seen that I secure two independently movable auxiliary frames to which wall paper can be secured, to a single outer or supporting frame and that such frames are made in sections to permit the bracing of the main frame.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the class described comprising a single outer or supporting frame, and within the same two independently movable auxiliary frames providing for the attachment thereto of paper and exhibiting the same on each side of the main frame.

2. A device of the class described, comprising a single main outer or supporting frame, and two parallel auxiliary frames within the same, said auxiliary frames being movable independently of each other and composed of parts movable independently of other parts of th same frame.

3. A device of the class described comprising a single outer or supporting frame, having a central longitudinal brace and a transverse brace, and two auxiliary frames within the outer or supporting frame, said auxiliary frames being divided to permit the said braces to extend outward and engage the supporting frame.

4. A device of the class described comrising a single outer or supporting frame, iiaving a central longitudinal brace and a transverse brace, and two sectional auxiliary frames within the outer or supporting frame, said auxiliary frames being movable independently of each other and having the sections of each also independently movable.
