To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. WEAVER, of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lavatories; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in lavatories and more particularly to the construction and arrangement of the waste devices, and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view partly in section showing the application of my improvements to a bath tub. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the plug showing the attachment of the operating lever thereto. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the devices shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detailed view of the pin by means of which the operating lever is connected with the stem of the valve or plug.
1 represents a portion of a bath tub provided in its bottom with a waste outlet opening and in this opening a sleeve or bushin 2 is mounted and provides a seat 3 for the plug or valve t. The sleeve 2 depends a short distance from the bottom of the tub and is externally screwthreaded for the reception of a hollow casting 5. This casting is connected by a pipe-section 6 with an elbow 7 and with the latter a vertical waste pipe 8 communicates. A hollow casting 9 is secured to the upper end of the waste pipe 8 and provides in its upper portion a bearing for an operating rod 10. The casting 9 is connected by a short pipe-section 11 with the overflow outlet of the tub, said overflow outlet being provided with a perforated cap 12. w I
The stem 13 of the valve or plug 4 is provided with a series of guide wings 1 1 movable in the sleeve 2 and said stem is also provided with a socket 15, the upper portion of which is threaded for the reception of the threaded upper end of a pin 16. The pin 16 depends below the lower end of the stem 13 and is provided with an elongated slot 17 for the reception of the flattened end 18 of an operating lever 19. The pin 16 is also provided above the slot 17 with curved lugs 20 against which the upper edge of the flattened end 18 of lever 19 can ride when said lever is turned on its fulcrum. The operating lever 19 is provided with integral trunnions 21 mounted in suitable bearings in the casting 7 and the outer end of this lever is pivotally connected with the lower end of the operating rod 10 which passes downwardly through the overflow pipe 8. In order to prevent the weight of the operating rod 10 from jamming the valve from its seat, a spring 22 is secured within the casting 9 and has frictional contact with said operating rod. A suitable pipe 23 connects the casting 5 with a sewer.
By connecting the stem of the valve with the operating lever in the manner above described, the pin 16 can be maintained in a proper upright position and thus facilitate the replacing of the valve or plug after said valve or plug has been removed for cleaning purposes.
It will be observed that my improvements permit the utilizing of the overflow pipe as a housing for the valve operating rod, thus simplifying the structure, protecting the valve rod from injury and avoiding all ap pearance of a complicated fixture.
It is evident that changes in the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts might be made without avoiding my invention and hence I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but,-

The combination with a bath tub having a waste outlet and an overflow outlet, of an elbow communicating with the waste outlet, a vertical pipe, an elbow communicating with the upper end of the vertical pipe and with the overflow outlet, a pipe connection between the lower end of the vertical pipe and with the first-mentioned elbow, a plug for the waste outlet, a stem for said plug comprising two removably connected members, the lower member having a horizontal opening, a lever pivotally supported in the pipe connection between the vertical pipe and the first mentioned elbow, and having one arm passing freely through the opening In testimony whereof, I have signed this in the lower member of the plug stem, an specification in the presence of two suboperating' rod passing through the vertical scribing Witnesses.
