Specication of Letters Patent.A
Application led March 22, 1911.
To all whom t may concern:
ABe it known that we, ERNEST L. PAYNE, GEORGE F. TAYLOR, and PETER A. PETERSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements' in Tablet-Forming Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention provides a press designed most particularly for book binders,
printers or paper manufacturers to facilil tate the formation of sheets of paper into blocks or tablets, said press being of such formation as to be quickly adapted to sheets of different sizes and to centralize the pressure upon the sheets so that the compressive ferce may be evenly distributed, which is essential to the formation of tablets to prevent rebounding or disalinement of the edges which are to receive the binding material, such as glue or other adhesive.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a side view of a tablet forming press embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a view thereof as seen from the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a section on the line of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section on the line g/-y of Fig. 1, the dotted lines indicating the position of the door when swung upward.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
The press comprises four corner posts or uprights 1 and horizontal bars 2 connecting end portions of the posts near their upper and lower ends, thereby forming a substantial structure or framework. Two of the sides are left open, whereas the other two sides are closed, the one by means of a door 3 and the other by means of a wall 4. The door 3 is hinged to one of the upper bars 2 so as to swing upward and is adapted to be secured when closed by suitableV fastening means, such as a catch 5. The wall 4 is movable so as to remain parallel to a given position at all adjustments. The sheets of paper to be formed into tablets are placed in a pile with adjacent edges in contact with the wall 4 and door 3. A bottom 6 supports the pile of paper 7 and is secured to the lower bars 2. The wall 4 is movable vinwardly and outwardly and is adapted to be held in the adjusted position vby suitable fastening means which as shown consist of rack bars 8, plates 9 and turn buttons 10. The rack bars 8 are secured to the upper and lower bars 2, the lower rack bars being engaged by plates 9, which are attached to the lower portion of the wall 4 and the upper rack bars being engaged by the turn buttons 10 which are pivot-ally connected `to the upper portion of the wall. Movement of the wall 4 admits of adapting the press to the size of the paper to be formed into tablets so that the strain may be nearly equalized upon the framework of the device.
The press embodies a follower 11 and pressure screw 12, the follower 11 being placed upon the pile of paper 7 and the pressure screw 12 being mounted in an adjustable carrier which is movable horizontally in two directions so that the pressure screw may be brought to a position centrally of the paper to be pressed so as to equalize the compressive force thereon. The carrier for the pressure screw 12 comprises two members 13 and 14 which are arranged relatively at a right angle to each other, both members having a two-fold movement, the one longitudinally and the other laterally. The pressure screw 12 is mounted in the members 13 and 14 centrally of their point of crossing and its lower end has a shoe 16 connected thereto by means of a swivel joint, whereby the pressure screw may turn therein without imparting any rotary movement to the shoe. The pressure screw-supporting means is mounted at the top of the framework so as to be retained in place against vertical movement without interfering with its horizontal adjustment in the two directions stated. The upper bars 2 are provided in pairs, which are spaced apart a dist-ance to receive between them the end portions of the members 13 and 14, said bars retaining the carrier in place and admitting of its ready adjustment. The members 13 and 14 preferably consist of plates so as to obtain an eX- tended bearing upon the sustaining bars.
v In the operation of the press the sheets or leaves to be secured in tablet, block or pad form are placed upon the bottom 6 in a pile with their adjacent edges touching the inner sides of the wall l and door 3 after which the follower l1 is placed on top of the pile and the pressure screw adjusted to bring it to a central position with reference to the dimensions of the pile so as to exert an even pressure thereon. After the pile has been compressed to the proper degree the door 3 is released and swung out of the way to eX- pose the edges of the paper to admit of glue or other adhesive being applied thereto for securing the sheets together in a well understood manner.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection wit-h the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while we have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which we now consider to be the embodiment thereof, we desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.

l. A tablet-forming press comprising a framework embodying corner posts or uprights, bars connecting the posts at or near their upper and lower ends, a bottom supported upon the lower connecting bars, a door for closing one of the four sides of the frame and hinged so as to be turned aside, aA
wall closing a side of the frame adjacent the door and adjustable inwardly and outwardly, means for securing the wall to the frame in the required position, and means `located at the upper end of the frame for compressing the material placed upon the bottom and touching the inner sides of the door and wall.
2. A tablet forming press comprising a framework embodying corner posts or uprights, bars connecting the posts at or near their upper and lower ends, a bottom supported upon the lower connecting bars, a door for closing one of the four sides of the frame and hinged so as to be turned aside, a wall closing a side of the frame adjacent the door and adjustable inwardly and outwardly, means for securing the wall to the frame in the required position, means located at the upper end of the frame for compressing the material placed upon the bottom and touching the inner sides of the door and wall, and a carrier for said pressure-applying means adjustable horizontally, laterally and forwardly and rearwardly to admit of centralizing said pressure-applying means with reference to the work.

In a press, the combination of a framework for receiving the material to be compressed, pressure-applying means at one end of the framework, and a lcarrier for said pressure-applying means adjustably mounted upon the framework and comprising two members the one arranged at a right angle to the other and each member having a longitudinal and a lateral adjustment.

A press comprising a framework adapted to receive the material to be compressed, said framework embodying spaced members, a pressure applying means, and a carrier for the pressure applying means comprising two members crossing at a right angle to each other and having their end portions passing through the spaces formed between the before mentioned spaced members, said carrier having a lateral and a forwardly and rearwardly movement to admit of centralizing the pressure applying means with reference to the work.
5. In a press, the combination of a framework, a wall closing a side of the press and adjustable inwardly and out-wardly, rack bars applied'to the upper and lower portions of the framework, plates secured to an end portion of the wall and adapted to engage with the teeth of one set of rack bars, and turn buttons applied to the opposite end portion of the wall to engage with the teeth of the other set of rack bars, said plates and turn buttons serving to hold the wall in the adjusted position.
