Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 14, 1911.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JORDAN H. GREEN, a citizenof the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to car door fasteners, and has for its object the provision of means whereby the car door will be elfectually held in its closed position, which means will be of a simple form and easily operated.
A further object of the invention is t provide a car door fastener of such construction that it may be readily connected with the train pipe so that an application of the brakes will be effected when the fastener is manipulated to permit opening of the door.
These stated objects, and other incidental objects which will hereinafter appear, are attained in such a mechanism as is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement which will be first fully described and then more distinctly stated in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car door and its connections showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail elevation of the fastening device. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the fastening device, showing the car door and a portion of the car body in section. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line'44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the bracket attached to the car door and looking at the under side of the same. Fig. 6 is a view partly in horizontal section and partly in plan showing the connection of the fastener with the train 1pe. p The car 1 and the door 2 may be of any desired material and of a desired dimensions, the lower edge of the door being held to the car by the usual guiding track or rail 3, and abutting against a stop 4 in the usual manner. The upper track 5 preferably consists of front and back walls 6 and 7 through which securing bolts 8- are inserted to secure the same to the car, the back wall being extended below the front wall to provide a track or rail 9 at the ends of which are stops 10. To the front wall 6 are secured the upturned ends 11 of a keeper 12 which forms a stop to prevent the door swinging laterally or being dislodged to expose the contents of the car.
To the upper end of the door I secure the hangers 13 which aresuspended from pins 1 inserted through carriages 15 provided with rollers 16 running on the track 9 whereby the door may be moved easily in its proper operation.
To the lower corner of the door 2 I secure a locking bracket 18 consisting of a casting having a back plate 19 through which securing bolts are inserted to secure the same to the door, a top 20 projecting horizontally outward from the upper edge of the back plate 19 and a locking lug 21 formed on the under side of the said top plate at one end of the back plate and having its outer end beveled or curved, as shown at 22, to facilitate its engagement by the locking lever.
On the car body, immediately adjacent the lower corner of the door opening, I secure a supporting plate or bracket 23, having an outwardly projecting horizontal shelf 24 upon which the locking lever 25 is mounted. This locking lever 25 has an eye 26 at one end to receive the upper end of a pin or rock shaft 27, provided at its lower end with a rocker arm 28, the purpose of which vwill presently appear. The eye 26 extends under the lug 21 when the parts are engaged and the lever is constructed with a shoulder 29, adjacent the said eye, adapted to engage the said lug 21, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, whereby the opening of the door will be prevented. The lever is further provided with a bifurcated head 30 which expands laterally beyond the intermediate portion or shank of the lever, and is adapted to abut the edge of the plate 19, as shown in Fig. 4, and thereby aid in holding the door in its closed position. Within the bifurcation 31 of the head 30, I pivot the upper end of a latch 32, which is adapted to depend from the said head through an open-ended slot or notch 33 in the shelf 24, and thereby prevent accidental or unwarrantedmovement of the lever over the shelf to be released from the bracket 18 on the door. It will be readily seen that in order to release the door, this latch 32 must be swung upward to clear Patented Dec. 19, 1911.
the shelf 24, after which the lever and the latch may be swung outward over the shelf. The rocker or crank arm 28 at the lower end of the rock shaft or pin 27 is connected by a link 3-1 with a valve lever 35 projecting from the stem of a valve 36 located in the train pipe 37 which is connected through a coupling 38 with the auxiliary reservoir 39 011 the car. The train pipe is bent so as to extend transversely under the bottom of the car and the valve 36 is duplicated so that the pipe will be connected to duplicate fastening devices on the two sides of the car whereby the brakes will be operated if the door on either side of the car is opened.
It will be readily appreciated from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that I have provided an exceedingly simple fastening device by which the door will be elfec tually held in its closed position, and which will cause the train to be brought to a stop should an attempt be made to open the door or should the latch be accidentally released while the train is in motion.
To fasten the door, the door is closed in the usual manner and the latch 32 is held in a horizontal position, so that the lever 25 may be swung into place upon the shelf 24, thereby engaging the bracket on the car door, after which the latch 32 is permitted. to drop into engagement with the notch 33 in the shelf, as shown, and as before stated. Should the latch be released and then swung outwardly horizontally, the locking lever will be released from its engagement with the bracket on the car door, but the movement of the locking lever will be transmitted directly to the rock shaft 27, so that the rocker arm 28 will be oscillated and this movement, imparted through the link 84: to the arm 35, will open the valve 36 and permit the air to escape from the train pipe and apply the brake in the well known manner.
The device is composed of few parts, which are simple in construction and may be applied to any car now in use at a slight cost and at a small outlay of time.
The locking lever, when in its holding position, is disposed bet-ween the horizontal shelf 24 and the horizontal top or plate 20 projecting from the car door, so that it will be impossible to move the lever in a vertical plane sufliciently to release it from its engagement with the rock shaft 27 and consequently the releasing of the lever without operating the brakes is prevented.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a car, and a door slidably mounted thereon, of a laterally proj ecting lug on the door, and a locking lever mounted on the car and adapted to swing in a horizontal plane to engage the said lug and means carried by said lever to prevent movement thereof.
2. The combination with a car, and a door slidably mounted thereon, of a support secured to the car, a locking lever mounted on the said support, a latch pivoted to the said lever and adapted to engage the support to prevent movement of the lever, and a lug projecting laterally from the door and adapted to be engaged by the lever.
3. The combination with a car, and a door slidably mounted thereon, of a bracket secured on the door and comprising a horizontally projecting plate and a locking lug on the under side of said plate, a shelf secured to the car, and a locking lever mounted on the said shelf and adapted to fit between the same and the said plate and engage the lug depending therefrom.
4. The combination with a car, and a door slidably mounted thereon, of a locking lug projecting laterally from the door, a bracket secured to the car and having an open-ended slot at one end, a locking lever mounted upon the said bracket at the opposite end of the same and adapted to engage the locking lug on the door, and a latch pivoted to the free end of the said lever and adapted to engage the open ended slot in the bracket.
5. The combination with a car, and a door slidably mounted thereon, of a locking lug projecting laterally from the door, a shelf secured to the car below the door, a lever mounted on the shelf at one end of the same and having a vertically disposed shoulder adjacent said end to engage the said locking lug and provided at its free end with a laterally expanded head, and a latch pivoted to said head and adapted to engage the shelf to prevent movement of the lever.
6. The combination with a car, and a slidable door thereon, of a lateral projection on the door, a horizontally swinging member on the car below the door adapted to engage behind said projection when the door is closed, and a vertical pivot for said member, said pivot being extended below the car and adapted to be connected with a train pipe.
7. The combination with a car, and a slidable door thereon, of a lateral projection on the door, a member mounted on the car below the door and adapt-ed to engage said projection to hold the door in its closed position, and means carried by said member for holding it in engagement with said projection.
