To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. Canons- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Worth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Drawer or Unit for Filing-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in filing cabinets, cases, etc.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of filin cabinets, and to equip the same with a simp e, eflicient and comparatively inexpensive relatively thin slide or drawer, designed particularly for card systems, and adapted to hold cards and similar material, and capable of exposing a portion of each of the cards, whereby a particular card may be quickly and easily found.

A further object of the invention is to provide a card holdin drawer or slide of this character, equippe at both the top and bottom with card holding means, whereby the capacity of the drawer or slide is doubled.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Each of the drawers or slides consists of an open oblong frame, preferably constructed of wood, but they may be made of any other suitable material, as will be readily understood. Thesides of the open frameof the drawers are provided at their inner faces with central longitudinal grooves 5 for the reception of a central longitudinal support 6, constructed of sheet metal or other suitable material and zig-zagly bent between its ends to provide upper and lower pockets 7 located at the upper and lower faces of the support 6 and formed by alternate long and short inclined walls 8 and 9. The long inclined walls 8 are arranged in spaced overlapping relation, and the short inclined walls 9 connect the adjacent overlapped edges or portions of the long inclined walls 8. By this construction, the reversely arranged u per and lower pockets are formed, and the slldable drawer is reversible, and in reversing it, it is adapted to be turned end for end to bring either set or series of pockets to the top, and it is provided at each end with a knob 10, or other form of handle, and it is designed to be indexed at 'each end. The support is also provided with smooth fiat terminal portions 11. The folds or bends .of the support are arranged transversely of the drawer or slide and extend entirely across the frame, and the support is fitted at its side edges in the side grooves, and the endedges 12 of the support are embedded in grooves or kerfs in the inner faces of the end bars or. pieces of the frame of the drawer at the upper and lower faces of the same and connected with the'sides of the. frame of the drawer by meansof suitable hinges 14, which permit the strips to swing upwardly and outwardly. The frame of the slide or drawer is provided at its upper and lower edges with inner longitudinal recesses 15, which are preferably extended across the ends of the frame. The outer leaves of the hinges are secured to the bottom of the recesses, and are located below the upper edges of the frame of the drawer and above the lower edges of the same. The hinged card retaining strips or members are locked in engagement with the cards by means of pivoted buttons 16, or other suitable means, mounted in the longitudinal recesses 15 and located between the upper and lower edges of the frame. When thehinged card retaining strips are open ready access is had to the contents of the drawer, and as a portion of each of the cards contained therein is exposed, the card retaining strips are arranged in flush relation with the bottom of the recesses 15, and they are constructed of sheet metal, or other suitable material and may be hinged to the frame of the slide or drawer in any preferred manner.

Inpractice the side and end bars of the frame of the drawer will be preferably one inch in height, so that a relatively thin drawer is provided. This will enable a large number of drawers to be mounted in a comparatively small space.

As the slides or drawers are equipped at their upper and lower faces with'card holding means, their capacity is not only increased but they will greatly expedite the filing and examining of cards or other matter.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is c 1. A device of the class described comprising a relatively thin drawer provided at its upper and lower faces with pockets adapted to hold the cards, etc., and means I also located at the upper and lower faces of the drawer for retaining the cards in the pockets, said drawer being reversible to arrange either of the said pockets at the top.

2. A device of the class described comrising a drawer provided at its upper and ower faces with a longitudinal series of pockets adapted to receive cards and the like and to expose a portion of each of the cards, and spaced means arranged at the top and bottom of the drawer for retaining the cards in the pockets.

3. A device of the class described comprising a drawer provided at its upper and lower faces with a longitudinal series of transversely disposed pockets adapted to receive cards and the like, and retaining strips hinged to the drawer at opposite sides thereof and located at the upper and lower faces of the same and arranged to retain the contents of the pockets in the drawer.

4. A device of the class described comprising a drawer provided with a longitudinal series of transversely disposed pockets adapted to receive cards and the like, and hinged strips arranged to engage the cards for retaining the same in the pockets and adapted to swing outwardly to afford access to the cards.

5. A device of the class described comprising a drawer provided with a longitudinal series of transversely disposed pockets adapted to receive cards and the like, longi tudinal card retaining strips hinged to the drawer at opposite sides thereof and arranged to swing inward over the pockets to engage the contents thereof, and means for locking the said strips in their engaging position.

6. A device of the class described comprising a drawer including an open frame, a support constructed of sheet metal provided with substantially zig-zag folds forming upper and lower transversely disposed pockets, and means for retaining cards and the like in the upper and lower pockets.

7 A device of the class described comprising a drawerincluding an open frame,

a support constructed of sheet metal provided with substantially zig-zag folds forming upper and lower transversely disposed pockets, said support being provided with smooth flat terminal portions, and means for retaining cards and the like in the upper and lower pockets.

8. A device of the class described comprising a drawer including an open frame provided at opposite sides with central longitudinal grooves and having upper and lower longitudinal recesses, a support mounted in the central grooves and provided with upper and lower pockets, and longitudinal strips hinged at the said recesses and arranged to project over the pockets to retain the contents therein.
