THRESHING-MIACHINE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed August 30, 1911.
0 all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, Ann/tar L. Rnnsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVilmore, in the county of Comanche and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful ThreshingMachine Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
By way of explanation I will state that in certain grain weighers for threshing machines, and notably in that device which is known in the trade as the Peoria VVeigher, the gate of the hopper is controlled by a trip arm, which, in its turn, is actuated by the scale beam of the weigher, the scale beam operating a friction clutch which is operatively connected with the trip arm. The friction mechanism which thus controls the action of the gate of the hopper, soon becomes worn and does not connect the operative parts of the machine promptly, when the scale beam rises. As a result, the operation of the weigher lags behind the tilting of the scale beam, with a consequent inaccuracy in the weight of the grain delivered.
The present invention aims to provide a novel form of spring means for imparting an initial actuation to the trip arm of a grain weigher for a threshing machine, whereby, so soon as the trip arm is set free for movement by the friction clutch of the weigher, there will be no lagging of the trip arm.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in. the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying draw1ngs,Figure 1 shows the invention in perspective, as sembled with portions of the weighing mechanism of a threshing machine; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the cut-off mechanism; Fig. 3 is a perspective of the clamp which serves, in connection with a fixed abutment, to hold one end of the spring as the other end of the spring is engaged with the trip arm; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of one end of the supporting member which carries the spring whereby the trip arm is actuated.
Specification of Letters Patent.

will be touched upon but briefly, only such parts thereof being described as are necessary for a complete understanding of the operation of the structure for which patent protection is desired.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the hopper of a grain weigher for a threshing machine. The cutoff mechanism for the hopper 1 comprises a gate 2, carried by a lever of the first order, the lever including converging arms 3 supporting the gate 2, and an operating rod 4, connected with the arms 3 at their place of union. At the point where the operating rod 4 is bifurcated to form the arms 3, the lever is fulcrumed, as shown at 5.
Pivotally connected, as at 6, with the operating rod 4, is a longitudinally adjustable trip arm 7, pivotally connected at one end with a crank pin 8 carried by a crank arm 9 secured to a shaft 10. The numeral 11 denotes the scale beam of the weigher, and the construction of the device is such that when the scale beam 11 tilts, friction mechanism (not shown) is automatically connected with the shaft 10 to actuate the same, the construction being such, when the device is in perfect working order, that when the scale beam 11 tilts, the shaft 10 W lll be operated, thereby moving the crank arm 9 and the trip arm 7, the trip arm 7 actuating the lever 4- 8, the gate 2 being thereby moved with respectto the hopper 1. As hereinbefore pointed out, the friction drive for the shaft 10 soon becomes worn, and the movement of the gate 2 lags behind the movement of the scale beam 11. To correct this difficulty, I have devised tae mechanism hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The invention comprises a supporting member, preferably taking the form ofa rod 12, formed at one end with a flattened, spring eye 14, the free end 15 of which lies against one side of the rod, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. In the inner edge of the eye 14, adjacent the free end 15 of the eye, there is a notch 16, adapted to receive a loop 17 formed at one end of a retractile, helical spring 18, the spring 18 surrounding the rod 12. The eye 14 constitutes a means whereby the rod 12 may be connected pivotally with the crank pin 8, the free end of the rod 12 being slidably supported by mechanism which will now be described.
As clearly shown in Fig. 3, the invention includes a clamp denoted generally by the numeral 19, the clamp embracing a pair of jaws 20, pivotally connected adjacent one end, as shown at 21. The jaws are overlapped upon each other, and in their adjacent edges, notches 22 are formed, the notches 22 defining an opening 23 through the clamp 19. A securing element 24 is passed through the free ends of the aws 20, the securing element 2% carrying a wing nut 25 or the like. The rod 12 rides freely in the opening 28, but the spring 18 is engaged by the jaws 20. An abutment plate 26 is provided, the ends 27 and 28 of which are angularly disposed. The spring 18 and the rod 12 are movable in the end 27 of the abutment plate, the end 28 being secured by means of bolts 29 or the like to the register casing 30 of the weighing machine. The end 27 of the abutment plate 26 is located between the clamp 19 and the trip arm 7 and thus, through the cooperation of the clamp 19 and the end 27 of the abutment plate, one end of the spring 18 is held, so that the spring may exert a tension upon the eye portion let of the rod 12, and conse quently upon the trip arm 7. By shifting the clamp 19 along the spring 18, the tension of the spring may be adjusted, it being obvious that the jaws 20 may be separated for this purpose, by removing the securing element 24..
In practical operation, so soon as the scale beam 11 tilts, thereby connecting the friction mechanism (not shown) with the shaft 10, the spring 18 will exert a pull upon the rod 12, the rod 12 serving thus to tilt the trip arm 7. Consequently, the trip arm 7"will be actuated initially, so soon as the scale beam 11 tilts, even though the aforementioned friction clutch mechanism should lag somewhat in engaging the shaft 10 whereby the crank arm 9 and the trip arm 7 are actuated.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple mechanism is provided whereby the cut-off structure including the gate 2 will be actuated promptly, when the scale beam 11 tilts.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is in a device of the class described, cutoff mechanism; a trip arm operatively connected with the cut-off mechanism; a rod Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents pivoted to the trip arm; a retractile spring surrounding the rod and connected thereto; a clamp in which the rod is adapted to slide, the clamp being engaged with the spring; and a fixed abutment adapted to engage the clamp.

3. Mechanism for initially actuating the trip arm of a weighing device, said mechanism comprising a rod having means to en gage the trip arm; a spring surrounding the rod and connected thereto; a clamp engaging the spring, in which clamp the rod is slidable; and an abutment member surrounding the spring and adapted to receive the clamp.
1. Mechanism for imparting an initial actuation to the trip arm of a weighing ma chine, said mechanism comprising a rod h aving means to engage with the trip arm; a spring surrounding the rod and secured thereto; a clamp comprising pivotally connected parts, adapted to engage the spring and to receive the rod slidably; and an abutment member through which the spring and the rod pass, and against which the clamp abuts.
5. Mechanism for imparting an initial actuation to the trip arm of a weighing ma chine, said mechanism comprising a rod formed at one end with an eye adapted for connection with the trip arm; a spring surrounding the rod and engaged at one end with the eye; a clamp comprising pivotally connected parts adapted to engage the spring, in which parts the rod is adapted to slide; means uniting the parts of the clamp, to hold the same engaged with the spring; and an abutment member through which the rod and the spring pass, the abutment member being adapted to engage the clamp.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
