FOOT COTLTTRQL 33GB STEAM SHOVELS.
Application filed September 10, 1923.
(/71 '10]? em v't may concern Be it known that I. lVrnLrAM ONnin. a citizen of the United States of America. residing at Eicienceville, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot Controls for Steam Shovels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to steam shovels and more particularly to lever means for operating a steam. shovel.
The principal object is to provide an im proved and efficient lever mechanism whereby the steam shovel may be more rapidly controlled and at the same time reducing the number of motions necessary for the operator to make in controlling the various engines and parts of a device of this character.
A still further object is to provide footcontrol in operating a steam shovel. This footcontrol mechanism is so constructed as to allow of three distinct functions that is, when the foot is thrust downwardly a ram is turned off and a brake on a drum is set; when the foot is raised slightly a brake is released on drum; and when foot is further raised the ram movement is put in action ready for hoisting.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification, and be specifically pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings exemplifying the invention, and in which Fig. 1 is an elevation of the device showing certain parts cut away.
Fig. 2 is a detail top plan view loci-ting down on a portion of the lever mechanism.
Fig. 3 is a View taken on line 33 of Figure 1.
Fig. 4: is an end View of a portion of steam shovel showing brake and friction bands.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken on line 1t of Figure 7.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 5 of Figure 4:.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
By referring to Figure 1 it will be seen that I have provided a foot rest 1. This foot rest 1 is secured at the junction of a push-rod 2 and a rocker arm 3. The upper end 4 of the push-rod 2 and the upper end 5 of the rocker arm 3 are secured together by means of a hinge pin 6.
Serial No. 661,811.
This rocker arm 3 is pivoted at rest 7 and rocks on a pin 8. This rocker arm 3 is provided with a weght arm 9 carrying a weight 10. The push-rod 2 is provided with an adjusting link 11 for the purpose of lengthening or shortening the same.
By referring to Figures 1, 2, aid 3, it will be seen that the end 12 of the push-rod 2 is secured to an arm 13 by means of a pin 14-. The upper end of this arm 13 is keyed to a brake shaft 15 which carries a brake arm 16 which in turn is secured to a brake band 17, functioning on a drum 13. (See Figures 1. 5. and 6.)
A link member 19 is secured at end 20 to the pin 14. The end 21 of the link member 19 is provided with a slot 22. This end 21 is joined to the lower end of an arm 23 provided with a pin 24 functioning with the slot 22. The upper end 25 of the arm 23 is pivotally secured to a frame portion 26 of an ordinary steam shovel, by means of a pivot pin, 27. This arm 23 has attached to it a piston rod 28 at an inner point 29 by means of a pivot pin 30.
The device operates as follows By referring to Figure 1 it will be seen that the weight 10 has brought the foot rest 1 to its maximum upward position. The piston rod 28 carrying a piston 31 within a piston chamber 32 shows the piston positioned to the left of an outlet steam line 33. The inlet steam line 34:, is brought in at the right end of the chamber 32. The steam now is passing through the steam line 33 and down into the end 35 of a piston chamber 36. This piston chamber 36 is secured to a gear wheel 43 positioned upon a shaft 44. It will be seen that the steam will push the piston 37 and the piston rod 38 outwardly and thereby moving arm 39 which is keyed to an eccentric shaft 10, which functions with a friction band 4-1 thereby set-- ting the friction on a drum 42.
The next movement of the device may take place by pressing the foot rest 1 to its extreme lower position. The arm 13 has caused the brake shaft 15 to rotate slightly in an anti-clockwise direction thereby setting the brake band 17. (See Figure 6.) The arm 23 has been swung to the right causing the piston 31 to be carried to the right of the outlet steam line 33 which then releases the pressure on the piston 37 and in turn releases the friction band 41.
The next movement of the device is set in operation by the operator now allowing the foot rest 1 to come up slightly. The push rod 2 secured to the arm 13 now causes aslight rotation otthe brake shaft 15 to rotate in a clock-wise movement thereby loosening the brake band 17. A drum 4:5 is now free from both brake bands 17 and 41 functioning upon the outer drums 18 and 42 of the drum 45. By referring to Figure 1 it will be seen that the arm 28 will remain stationary when the slight upward movement is made by the foot rest 1 and connecting parts due to the slot 22 termed in the link member 19, which allows a pin 2% to travel in this slot 22 until the right end of the slot 22 has been reached. At that time the pin 24 engages the inner end of the slot 22 and will actuate the arm 23 as above described when the foot rest is allowedto come 20 to its highest upward position.
What I claim is A device of the class described, a rocker arm a weight secured to one end of said rocker arm, a foot rest secured at the other end 01 said rocker arm, a push rod hinged to said rocker arm underneath the foot rest, the other end of said push rod pivotally secured to an arm, said arm functioning with a brake shaft, an arm having its upper end secured to -frame work of a device described, the lower end of said arm carrying a pin, a link member secured to the brake shaft and provided with a slot functioning with said pin, a piston rod pivotally secured to said rod which. arm is attached below the pivot point or said arm, substantially as de scribed for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
