CUBRENTJNDUCING APPARATUS.
m ners.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1911.
Application. filed January 17, 1911. Serial No. 603,18 1.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE O. BRETH- ERICK, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the count of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin "Current-Inducing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to rotary fluid impelling or impelled apparatus embodying working vanes from which the fluid is delivered to one side of the plane of rotation, and the primary aim thereof is to improve such apparatus for freer delivery of the fluid from the vanes.
The invention is further directed to an improved apparatus of the above type primarily designed for inducing currents of air.
The invention resides in the novel fea tures and combination-of parts as set forth in the following description and succinctly defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout: Figure 1 shows in diametrical section a blowing apparatus embodying the features of my invention. Fig. '2 is a sectional end view of the same on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 with a portion of the wheel broken away.
One feature of the invention resides in providing, at one side of the wheel, as 1, a suitable shield 2, which, as shown, is positioned centrally in the turned-in mouth portion 3 of a bell shaped chamber a and provided of circular form with a crowning surface facing the plane of rotation of the wheel vanes 5. These vanes, which as will be observed are concavo-convex in cross section, extend radially from an a ertured web 6 with gradually increasing width outwardly'and are connected at the tips with a circular rim 7 whose diameter is substantially equal to the opening in the mouth ortion of chamber 4. Shield 2 is conveniently supported from a cross piece 4'. of
chamber 4 through the medium of a screw threaded stem 2' fixed to the shield and engaged in a screw threaded aperture in the 8 is an adjusting shaft 9 ournaled on cross piece 1. and provided on its outer end portion with a hand wheel 10. Stem 2 fits freely in the bore of gear 8 and is provided with a groove engaging a feather secured to the gear, which latter is provided with a peripheral groove for engagement with a pin" 4 secured to cross piece 4.
Combined with wheel 1 is a regulator comprising a series of shut-off plates 12 se cured to a ring 13 which is releasably secured, by a suitable'set screw, to a hub extension of web 6 for angular adjustment to position the plates 12 over respective apertures 6 of the web, as may be desired to vary the capacity of these apertures for cross currents which are induced, in operating the wheel, by interposition of shield 2 between the mouth and delivery passage 3 of chamber 4.
1 Wheel 1, as shown, is secured to an armature shaft extension 14 of an electric motor 15, mounted in axial alinement with chamber 4 on support 16, secured to said chamber.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters latent of the United States of America, 1s:
1. In apparatus of the character described, a wheel having vanes curved in cross section, a shield extending alongside said wheel and spaced from the vanes thereof, the adjacent face of said shield being convex to thereby obtain a greater spacing thereof with respect to the vanes of said wheel toward its outer edge, and a chamber extending about said shield in spaced relation thereto.
2. In apparatus of the character described, a wheel having radial vanes which increase in width in an outward direction and provided with concave. active faces, a chamber, and a shield arranged in spaced relation to said wheel and casing, said shield having a convex face opposing said wheel.
3. In apparatus of the character described, a wheel having varies for working fluid, a shield adjustably supported at one side of said wheel for movement toward and from the same, a chamber receiving said shield, and means for adjusting said shield including meshing gears one of which is mounted on a relatively fixed part and connected with said shield, the other of said projecting without said chamber.
4. In apparatus of the character described, a wheel comprising a hub part and vanes for working fluid, said vanes being carried by said hub part, said hub part being formed to permit of the passage of fluid therethrough, means for regulating the flow of fluid through said hub part of the wheel, and a shield extending alongside said wheel and spaced from the said vane'sthereof.
5. In apparatus of the character described, -a wheel comprising a hub part and van'es extending about the same, said hub part being formed to permit of the passage of fluid therethrough, means for regulating the :flow of fluid through said hub part of the wheel, a shield extending alongside said wheel, and means adjustably supportingsaid'shield for movement toward from said wheel. Y
6. In apparatus of the character deand scribed, a wheel comprising a hub part and shield for movement toward'and from said wheel, and a chamber extending about said shield and providing a passageway for fluid. Signed at Seattle, Washington, this 9th day of January 1911.
