To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED E. IRELAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Couches, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in bed couches, the object of the invention being to provide a strong durable construction of extreme simplicity, which employs a mattress and a separate couch pad, which are secured to opposite sides of a folding frame, and said frame connected to the end supports in such a manner as to enable the frame to be readily folded to form a couch or opened out to form a bed.

A further obj ect is to provide an improved construction of folding frame, one section of which being connected by pivoted links to the end supports, and another section movable upon rollers supported in hangers depending from said end supports. I

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is an end elevation illustrating my improved bed couch opened out to form a bed. Fig. 2, is a broken plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is an end elevation showing the position of the frame partly folded, and Fig. 1, is an end elevation of the frame completely folded forming a couch.

In constructing my improved bed couch, I provide two inverted U-shaped supports 1 having casters 2 in their lower ends, and connected by angle irons 3, and suitable braces 4; connect the angle irons with the end supports to form a rigid structure. Between these end supports 1, my improved spring frame 5 is located. This spring frame is preferably composed of end angle irons 6, which are connected by longitudinal bars 7 and these end angle irons 6 are connected by a suitable mattress support, the end springs 8 of which are clearly shown in Fig. 2. immaterial, any improved form may be used. Frame 5 comprises three sections, the central section 9 being relatively short, and the angle irons at the ends thereof are rounded as shown at 10, so as to allow the side members of the frame to freely swing upon rivets 11 connecting said members and constituting pivots. Links 12 are pivotally connected at one end to the end supports 1, and at their other ends to one of the outer members of frame 5, while the other outer member is supported upon rollers 13 mounted in hangers 11 secured to supports 1. On the upper face of the frame 5, when the latter is opened to form a bed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a mattress 15 is secured in any approved manner, and to the opposite face of one frame section, a pad or mattress 16 is secured, so as to constitute the cushioned top of the couch when the latter is folded as shown in Fig. at.

To facilitate the swinging of the frame to open and closed position, straps 17 are secured to the frame, and when the parts are as shown in Fig. 1, and it is desired to open the couch, it is simply necessary to grasp one of these straps 17 and throw the frame section over as shown in Fig. 3, and then all. the way down as shown in Fig. 1. This movement is accommodated by reason of the pivoted links 12, which swing around, and the other member of the frame rides upon the rollers 13. These links 12 and rollers 13 render the opening and closing movement of the frame an extremely short one, and to support the frame sections when in position as a couch, brackets 18 are secured to one frame section and engage the end supports 1.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a bed couch, the combination with end supports, of a frame comprising hinged sections, links pivotally connecting one of said sections with the end supports, and depending hangers on said end supports supporting another of said sections, substantially as described.

2. In a bed couch, the combination with end supports, of a frame comprising hinged sections, links pivotally connecting one of said sections with the end supports, and rollers on said end supports supporting another of said sections, substantially as de scribed.

3. In a bed couch, the combination with end supports, of a spring mattress supporting frame comprising three sections pivoted together, links pivotally connecting one end section to the end supports, and hangers on the end supports supporting the other of said end sections, substantially as described.

4. In a bed couch, the combination with end supports, of a spring mattress supporting frame comprising three sections pivoted together, links pivotally connecting one end section to the end supports, hangers on the end supports, and rollers mounted in said hangers and supporting the other of said end frame sections, substantially as described.

5. In a bed couch, the combination with end supports, of a spring mattress supporting frame comprising three sections pivoted together, links pivotally connecting one end section to the end supports, and hangers on the end supports supporting the other of said end sections, a folding mattress secured to one face of said frame and covering the entire frame, and a second mattress secured to the opposite face of the frame sec- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,

6. In a bed couch, the combination with end supports, of a spring mattress supporting frame comprising three sections pivoted together, links pivotally connecting one end section to the end supports, hangers on the end supports, rollers mounted in said hangers and supporting the other of said end frame sections, a folding mat-tress secured to one face of said frame and covering the entire frame, and a second mattress secured to the opposite face of the frame section pivotally connected to the end supports, substantially as described.

7. In a bed couch, the combination with end supports, of a spring mattress supporting frame comprising three sections pivoted together, links pivotally connecting one end section to the end supports, hangers on the end supports, rollers mounted in said hangers and support-ing the other of said end frame sections, a folding mattress secured to one face of said frame and covering the entire frame, a second mattress secured to the opposite face of the frame section pivotally connected to the end supports,-

brackets on said last-mentioned frame section constructed to engage the end supports when the frame is folded to form a couch, and bars connecting the end supports, substantially as described.
