HOG-RINGER.
Application filed February 11, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. GRIzzLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nancy, in the county of Dickenson and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hog-Ringers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hog ringers and the particular object of the invention is to provide a simple and efiicient tool which may be conveniently handled, which may be readily operated to ring a hog without holding the same, and which may be manufactured and sold at a relatively small cost.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a hog ringing tool which comprises a pivoted ring holding jaw having a pawl to hold it in operative ring compressing position and means adapted to throw the pawl out of engagement with the jaw so that the ring will be released when fully compressed.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of one side of the tool. Fig. 2 is an edge ele ation of the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pawl.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 and 2 represent a 'pair of crossed members pivoted together at 3 and having one end of each member provided with a gripping handle 4. The opposite ends of the members 1 and 2 are formed into jaws 5 and 6, the former of which is provided with a ring receiving anvil 7 and the latter of which is provided with a pivotal extension 8 upon which a ring receiving anvil 9 isksecured.
Pivoted to the member 1 between the handle 1 and the pivotal point is a pawl 10 having an extension 11 at one end adapted to engage a lateral shoulder 12 formed upon the extension jaw 8. The opposite end of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1911.
Serial No. 608,044.
the pawl is provided with a finger 13 which is adapted to be engaged by the adjustably mounted screw 14 carried upon the handle of the member 2. The pawl is normally thrown into engagement with the shoulder by a spring 15 which surrounds the pivotal bolt thereof and has one end in engagement with the pawl and its opposite end in engagement with the member 1.
In the operation of the device a ring is placed in between the jaws 7 and 9 with its ends open in position to engage over the hogs snout, the handles 4 then quickly clamped together, the pawl holding the extension 8 rigid with the member 1 until the screw 14: contacts with the finger 13 at which time the pawl is released from the shoulder and the ring released from the jaws. Thus it will be seen that a ring may be placed upon a hogs nose without even touching the animal, care being taken of course to make the operation as rapid as possible.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is In a tool of the character described, the combination with a pair of crossed pivoted members, one of said members having a rigid jaw thereon carrying a ring anvil, a jaw extension connected to the opposite member, a jaw pivoted on said extension and having an ofiset shoulder, a pawl piv oted to said opposite member and adapted to engage the shoulder to lock the pivoted jaw against movement on its associated member, an extension on the pawl lying between said members, and an adjustable screw carried by the first member and adapted to engage the extension on the pawl to release the same in the operation of closing the jaws.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS J. GRIZZLE.
