Specification of Letters Patent.
' CONVERTIBLE CHAIR.
Patented Dec. 5, 1911.
Serial No. 605,180.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ALBERT DEMERs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Manchester, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Convertible Chair, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to convertible chairs, and it has for an object to provide a. rocking chair which may be readily converted into a cradle, a cradle member being normally disposed under the seat of the chair, which may be erected across the front of the chair to form the side member for the cradle, the sides of the chair being adjustably mounted so that they may be lowered we horizontal position to form the head and the foot of the cradle.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification, in which the preferred form of my invention is described. I
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the invention; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device with the sides of the chair lowered and the cradle member erected to form the cradle; Fig. 4 is a sectional View on the line 44 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view showing the means for holding the sides of the chair erect.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a base 5 is provided having rocker supports 6. Rockers 7 are disposed on the rocker supports 6, corner posts 8 being secured to these rockers 7. Side frame members 9 connect the corner posts 8 ateach side of the chair, and these side frame members 9 are connected at the rear of the chair by a frame member 10. A frame member 11 is disposed across the chair and has its terminals secured to the side frame members 9 at a distance from the rear frame member 10 and near the front of the chair. The plane of the upper surface of the frame member 11 is disposed below the plane of the side frame members 9. The corner posts 8 have grooves 12 in which are disposed pins 13 secured to the side members 14 of the chair. Plates 15 are secured to the corner 7 posts 8, these plates 15 being provided with pins 16 which are adapted to be engaged by pins 17 7 secured to. the side members 14. L1nks 18are pivoted to the corner posts 8,
horizontal members 21 which are in turn connected by vertical-members 22. These and these links 18' are connected with links members 21 and 22 form the rear of the chair? In the front corner posts 8 there are grooves 23 which are disposed to receive pins 24 secured to the cradle member 25. There are also grooves 26 which extend through the upper terminals of the corner posts 27, these grooves 26 being provided for receiving pins 28 which are secured to the cradle member 25.
The chair is provided with a seat 29 which rests on the side frame members 9 and the rear frame member 10, the seat 29 having cut-away port-ions 30 which fit around the corner'posts 8. Flanges 31 are secured to the rocker supports 6, and flanges 32 are secured to the rockers 7. These flanges 31 and 32 are connected by springs 33 respectively.
In using the invention, when it is desired to convert the chair shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings into the cradle shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the sides 14 of the chair are raisedso that the pins 17 will be disengaged from the plates 15, the grooves 12 permitting the pins 13 to move upwardly with the side chair members 14. When the upper portions of the side chair members 14 are disengaged from the corner posts 8, the side chair members are lowered to a horizontal posit-ion where they are supported by the links 18 and 19. These links 18 and 19 are folded together when the side mem- 28 rest at the bottom of the grooves 26. At all times the pins 24 are disposed in the grooves 23, the said grooves 23 being long enough to permit of a suflicient movement of the cradle member 25 to accomplish the adjustment of the pins 28 in the grooves 26.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a convertible chair a frame having a support for a cradle member and four corner posts with grooves, open at their upper ends, and grooves disposed therebelow, there being two additional gooves one over the other in each of the corner posts at the front of the frame, the upper additional grooves extending through the top of the last-mentioned corner posts, a cradle member having pins disposed in the additional grooves, the cradle member being adapted to be raised to free its upper pin from the upper additional grooves, and permit it to be disposed horizontally on the cradle member support, side members having pins disposed for moving in the second-mentioned grooves, and additional pins adapted to move vertically into and out of the firstmentioned grooves, links pivoted to the inner sides of the corner posts, and links pivoted to the first-mentioned links and to the ends of the side members, the links being folded, and being disposed between the ends of the side members and the corner posts, when the side members are disposed vertically with the pins on the side members disposed in the additional grooves.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT DEMERS. Witnesses:
O. R. JACQUES, GEORGE V. RAY.
