This invention relates to gage attachments for button hole machines. l

- Heretofore, in the operation of sewing button holes in theuppers ofv shoes it has been necessary for one operative to mark the .points where thepbutton holes are to be .15 placed.

The arm 8 extends outwardly andv downwardly and is provided at its' outer end with a lateral leg 11v which is adapted to abut against the adjacent side of the presser arm 3. An extension 12 on the leg is adapted tobe engagedbeneath the presser arm in order tol prevent the leg 11. from rising as will hereinafter be explained. A lateral extension 13 on the leg 11 is provided wth a smooth opening in which is journaled an .adjusting screw 14 whose threaded portion lies within a channel 15 formed .in the outer side of the4 leg 11.

Slidably mountedupon the leg 11 is a pin holding block. 16 having an inwardl projecting ear 17'. which extendsintothe c iannel 15 and is threaded to receive the screw 14 s0 that the block maybe adjusted to and fro on the leg. The outer end of the screw is provided with'amilled nut 18 for turning the same.

Threaded into an extension of the block 16 is a punching pin 19 which is provided with a. pointed end 20 and is operated to adjust its position within the block by a screw driver or like tool which engages the kerf in the upper. end. The adjusting screw '14 moves the block 16 longitudinally of the leg and the screw 19may-be adjusted vertically so as to'secure light and-,heavy punching. As the presser foot is brought down into `90 engagement with the leather upon the friction plate 5, the pin passes through the leather and enters the recess 7 thus marking the position of the'next button hole. When the presser foot is raised the upper is moved until the mark'made by the point 20 is properly positioned vwith"relation. to the presser foot when thepresser foot is again thrown into position to hold the upper for sewing and another mark is made by the point 20. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is v 1. The combination with a'base-plate, of a button hole machine, and a pivoted oscil' 105 latable presser arm and foot, thereon, of an attachment comprising a supporting memyloer, adjustably mounted upon the arm' and having a lateral leg, of 4a punch holdin block adjustably mounted-upon the. latera leg, und :L punch ndjustably mounted n said block substantially in line with the movementy oi the presser foot.

2. The combination with a pVoted oseillntuhle presser arm and foot, of an attachment therefor comprising f1 supporting memlmr mounted upon the presser arm and having u luternl leg', means on the lateral leg to engage the presser arn to prevent raising IO of said leg, a punch holding block adjustably mounted upon the lateral leg, a punch adjustublymounted in said block, and a plate carried by the base plate and having means to receive the punch.
