To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAV KOMAREK, a citizen of the United States, residing at St.

Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new pertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to car truck side frames, and has for its object to provide a side frame of novel construction which is so designed that the journal boxes or the axles can be removed Without taking down the side frame or disconnecting it from the other parts of the truck.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevational view of a car truck side frame constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged end View of the side frame; Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the removable pedestal columns; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the tie-bar that connects the removable pedestal columns to the main portion of the side frame.

Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, A designates a truck side frame provided with integral pedestal columns 1 and integral portions 2 which extend over the journal boxes B. Removable pedestal columns C are detachably connected to the side frame,

preferably by means of bolts or other suitable fastening devices 3 which pass through said removable pedestal columns and through the portions 2 of the side frame which project over the journal boxes. The lower ends of the removable pedestal column C are also preferably connected to the main portion A of the side frame by means of tie-bars D, and suitable fastening devices such, for example, as bolts 4 which pass through the lower ends of the removable pedestal columns G, through the tie-bars D, and through flanges 5 on the main portion of the side frame arranged adjacent the lower ends of the integral columns 1.

The particular shape of the removable pedestal columns 0 is immaterial so far as my broad idea is concerned, and the particular shape of the main portion of the side frame is also immaterial as my invention consists broadly in a truck side frame having integral pedestal columns and a removable pedestal column cooperating with each of the integral pedestal columns for confining the journal boxes in position, thereby enabling the journal boxes or the axles to be removed without taking down the sideframe or disconnecting it from the other parts of the truck. I

In the construction herein shown which represents the preferred form of my invention, each of the removable pedestal columns C consists of a cast member of approximately channel-shape in cross section provided adjacent its upper end with a horizontal web in which openings 6 are formed to receive the fastening devices 3, and provided at its lower end with an opening 7 for receiving the bolt 4 which passes through the tie-bar D. The tie-bars D also preferably consist of castings of approximately the shape shown in Fig. 6 wherein it will be seen that each tie-bar is provided at one end with an integral channel-shaped part 8 which receives the removable pedestal column C wit-h which it cooperates, and at its opposite end with an integral channelshaped part 8 which receives the depending flange 5 on the main part of the side frame that is arranged in alinement with the integral pedestal column with which the tiebar cooperates. The channel-shaped parts on the tie-bars hold both colunms of each pedestal in alinement and reduce the shearing strains on the fastening devices 4, and,

'if desired, the parts 2 of the side frame to which the removable pedestal columns C are connected, can be provided with depending lugs 9 that bear against the upper ends of the removable pedestal columns C, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus reduce the shearing strains on the fastening devices 3 which connect the upper ends of said removable pedestal colunms to the portions 2 of the side frame. I prefer to provide the portions 2 of the side frame with integral spring seat members E which receive the springs that are arranged between the side frame and the journal boxes, as shown in Fig. 4.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A truck side frame provided with integral pedestal columns and integral horizontally disposed portions which project over the journal boxes, inverted cup-shaped spring seats formed integral with said horizontally disposed portions, removable channel-shaped pedestal columns butting against the under sides of said horizontally disposed portions at points beyond said spring seats and connected to same by fastening devices which are arranged inside of said columns, tie-bars arranged between each removable pedestal column and the integral pedestal column on the side frame with which it cooperates, substantially channel-shaped portions on the ends of said tie-bars that embrace the parts with which the tie-bars cooperate, and long bolts passing through said tie-bars and through the members between which the tieloars are arranged.
