PICK.
, Specification of Letters intent. Application filed September 30. 1910. Serial No. 584,679.
TO EUGENE Patented Dec. 5, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, FRANK S. HARRING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picks; and I do declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tains'to make and use the same.
' .My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in picks, but more'particularly has reference to the manufacture of a device of this description in sections so that when a part becomes broken or worn a an elevation showing the parts.of my im-.'
provement assembled with one of the eye sections removed Fig. 3 a section at the line a m, of Fig. 1 Fi .4 a detail enlarged view 'of the interior 0 one of .the eye sections, and Fig. 5 a view. similar to Fig. 2 but showing the parts of my improvement assembled in a sli htly different manner such as wouldbe suitable in the instance of a straight pick.
Similar numerals of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing. 1 are the eye sections which have formed integral therewith curved portions 2 that are complementary of the eye, and interiorof each of these sections and on opposite sides of the portions 2 are wedge shaped o positely disposed recesses 3 WhlCh are per 0- or the purpose presently to be explained.
5 are the pick points of any suitable and approved shape, the heel ends of which are wedge shaped and provided with elongated slots 6.
In the usual form of pick, such as iscommonly used, the pick omts slope'toward the inner end of the ban 1e 7 as shown at Figs.
1 and 2, and in the present instance this is brought about by merely assembling the eye sections 1 and points 5 as is shown particularly at Fig. 2, wherein the inclined walls of the recesses 3 are nearest the inner end of the handle 7, but in case a straight plck is desired, such as iscommonly used 1n coal mlnes, the parts would be assembled as is shown at Fig. 5, wherein the inclined end of the pick.
walls of the recesses 3 are nearest the outer In assembling the parts of my improvement, the wedge shaped heel ends of the pick points are forced within the recesses 3,
and the sections 1 are clamped firmly against these heel ends bymeans of bolts 8-- passed through the perforations 4 and slots 6, these bolts having threaded outer ends which preferablyengage withthe threaded walls of the perforations 4 in one of the sections 1, nuts 9 being threaded on the extremitles of these bolts for the purpose of ,clamping the sections 1 against said heel ends, the thickness of the latter. being slightly greater than the combined de th of the recesses which contain them, so t at the sections 1 may be firmly clamped against said ends.
In Fig. 5, the handle eye is tapered oppositely from that shown in the other form of the invention, necessitating the use of" a handle of special form,
Constant use of the pick will'causethe heel ends to be driven more firmly within the'recesses 3, and this will be accomplished without the slightest shock against the bolts 8 owingto the fact that the latter extend freely through the elongated slots 6 in these heel ends, and this is a very important feature since ifthe' shock occasioned by the use of the pick is sustained either by the bolts or by any part having contact with the latter, these bolts are very apt to become bent or brokenand the pickitself thereby rendered useless.
In my improvement, the pick points, in
the event of breakage or undue wear, are
readil replaced by new points, and the same is true of the eye 8801510118.
Variouskinds of points may be utlllzed in connection with my improvement so that the latter may be employed as amattock,
a millstone hammer, a mill pick, &c., and my invention is therefore not limited in this respect so long as the points are provided with the wedge shaped heel ends. 7
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A pick h'ead composed of a pair of similar sections, each having a central transverse curved portion conjointly forming a handle receiving eye, and with further having a wedge-shaped recess on each side of the curved portion thereof communicating with the latter and extending through the end of said sections, pick pomts having wedgeshaped heels received in said recesses, and formed with longitudinal slots, bolts passed through the sections and extending through said slots, said slots being of considerably greater length than the diameter of the bolt and being arranged so that the bolts extend adjacent the inner end of the slot, to thereby permit the pick points to have an inward movement with respect to the bolts, the inner ends of said wed e-shaped recesses being each closed by the andle, the handle extending inthe eye formed by said sections.
In testimon whereof I aflix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
FRANK S. HARRINGTON.
