To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LOVE, a sub ect of the King of. Great Britain, resid ng at Toronto, Province of Ontario, Dominlon of Canada, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Saw-Sets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in saw sets, more particularly to devlces of this character designed to be -operated by hand power, and has for one of its ob ects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efiiciency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device of this character whereby a plurality of the teeth of a saw may be set from opposite sldes, so that the whole setting operation may be accomplished by moving the device once only over the saw.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device which may be adjusted to fit saws having different slzes of teeth.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinaftershown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim; and, in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the inven tion, Figure 1 is an end view of the improved implement, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the improved implement with the parts arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are perspective views of the members forming the joint of the compression members. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the handle members illustrating the construction more fully.
The improved device comprises in general a pair of compression members somewhat resembling a pair of pliers and carrying adjustable dies adapted to engage against the teeth of a saw from opposite sides, and a guide or guard to control the position of the saw, while the teeth are being set, and means whereby the amount of the set may be controlled.
The compression portion of the improved device comprises two handle members 10l1 pivotally united at 12 and with. laterally extending terminal bars 1314, the bars de slgned to move toward and away from each other when the handles are correspondingly moved, in the same manner as an ordinary members to maintain the handles yieldably in their open position. Formed through the handle member 11 is a relatively large opening 17 and mounted to swing at 18 in this opening is a swivel nut 19 through which a threaded rod 20 operates, the rod having a .finger disk 21 to facilitate its operation.
The threaded rod extends through the spring 16 and serves to prevent lateral movement of the latter. At its inner end the rod 20 terminates near the stud l5, and thus operates to control the movement of the bars 1314 and correspondingly control the amount of the set which is to be imparted to the saw teeth, as hereinafter explained.
The pivot 12 which unites the handle members 10-11 is formed with a square aperture therethrough, and engaging in this aperture is a square stud 22 having a head 23 at one end and a threaded portion 24 at the opposite end, the threaded portion being provided with a wing nut 25. The square rod 22 forms a support for a saw guide and this saw guide is represented at 26 and formed from a single strip of plate metal bent into rectangular shape as shown in Fig. 2 and with downturned bifurcated portions 27-28 to engage overthe projecting portions of the square rod 22. means the member 26 is adjustably supported upon the handle members, while at the same time the handle members may be actuated independently of the member 26. Thus the member 26 may be adjusted within the range of the downturned portions 27-281 without interfering with the movement of the handle members and the saw setting attachments. The upper portion of the member 26 is divided by a slot or recess represented at 29 in which the saw blade indicated at 30 is disposedto receive the setting action. 7

Two or more of the dies may be employed, but preferably four will be used, two at each side of the saw, and for the purpose of illustration two of the dies are located upon each of the bars l314. Each die consists of a jaw 31 having an internal guide opening slidably engaging over the bars 13-14: and arranged to be clamped thereto by a set screw 32. At
their inner ends the dies are reduced as shown at 33 to correspond to the teeth of the saw with which they are to be engaged. Depending from the body portion of the dies is a threaded lug 34 through which a threaded rod 35 extends, the lugs being right and left threaded, and the rod being correspondingly right and left threaded and provided with a finger grip 36 to facilitate the operation of the rod. By this arrangement it will be obvious that by rotating the rod 35 by its grip portion 36 the die members 31 may be moved toward or away from each I other along the bars 131t, and thus adapt the dies to the size of the teeth of the saw.
The improved device is simple in con struction, can be inexpensively manufactured and of any required strength and of any required size.
\Vhat is claimed is A saw set comprising two members crossing each other intermediate their ends and with laterally extending jaws at one end, a pivot pin extending through said members at their crossing point and with a square aperture therethrough, a square pin extending through said pivot aperture, a saw guard including downwardly directed slotted portions engaging over said square pin at the ends of the pivot pin, means for clamping said square pin to said saw guard, and dies adjustably engaging said jaws.
