To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. HAR- BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lagro, in the county of Wabash and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Thimbles and Soot-Catchers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

ThlS invention relates to improvements 1n combined stove pipe thimbles and soot catchers.

One object of the invention is to provide a thimble and soot catcher of this character having means whereby a stove pipe may be securely fastened to the thimble when inserted therein or engaged with the outer side thereof.

Another object is to provide means for catching and retaining the soot falling from the stove pipe whereby said soot may be readily removed and prevented from accumulating in the flue.

With these and other objectsin view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly-pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the first three figures of the drawing, my improved thimble comprises a box or casing 2 of any suitable size but larger than the stove pipe, and formed of any suitable material. The box 2 is adapted to be set into a chimney or flue at the desired elevation for receiving a stove pipe. In the front wall of the box or casing 2 is arranged a centrally disposed outwardly projecting cylindrical collar 3which is adapted to engage the end of the stove pipe 1. fastening devices, said devices comprising 7 right angularly formed lugs 4 which are riveted at 15 to -the front wall of the box 2 in any suitable manner. Any desired number of lugs 4. may be employed, said lugs being arranged close to the collar as shown. In the outwardly projecting portion of the lugs are formed threaded passages with which are engaged clamping screws 5, said screws having heads whereby the same may be readily screwed into engagement with the outer sides of the pipe and the latter thus clamped into tight engagement with the collar and prevented from becoming casually disengaged from the latter.

In Fig. 4 of the drawings the stove pipe 1 is shown as being inserted into the collar 3 and when thus arranged the end of the pipe is. fastened and prevented from being pushed too far into the flue by means of a right angularly formed clamping lug and stop member 6 one arm of which is rlveted at 15 to the inner surface of the front wall of the box 2, while the other member is adapted'to project into the collar as shown. By thus arranging the pipe clamping devices it will be seen that the end of the stove pipe may be firmly secured to the thimble and thus prevented from be*-' ing casually withdrawn or working loose and which is also prevented from being inserted too far into-the flue In connection with the thimble I preferably employ a soot catcher comprising a rectangular box 10 open at its upper side and arranged in the chimney or flue immediately below the thimble casing 2 as shown. If desired the box 10 may be formed as a part of the box or casing 2. The inner portion of the box 10 when thus arranged extends across the opening in the flue or chimney and is thus in position to catch any soot or cinders dropping from the smoke passing through the chimney. The soot thus caught by the box is removed therefrom through a suitable opening 11 formed in the front side of the box, said opening being normally closed by a door 12 which is preferably slidably engaged with the front end of the box but which may be connected thereto in any suitable manner to close the opening in the box.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood withoutrequiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus I claim is:

1. In a stove pipe thimble, the combination with a collar adapted to engage one described my invention what side of a stove pipe at its end, a plurality of right angular lugs whose outer arms are adapted to engage the other side of the stove pipe, and set screws through one of said members pressing the stove pipe toward the other; of a box-shaped casing in the chimney. wall larger than said stove pipe and having a flat front wall, its rear end opening into the flue, said collar projecting outward from the wall of the casing, and rivets connecting the radially projecting arms of said lugs with said wall.

2. A stove pipe thimble comprising a boX- shaped casing larger than the pipe and adapted to be arranged in the flue of the chimney, said casing having an open inner end and a flat front wall with an opening therein, a pipe-receiving coll'ar around said opening adapted to receive the end of the stove pipe when inserted therein, right-angular clamping lugs secured to the inner side of said wall and having their outer ends projecting into said collar and recessed on their outer sides to form pipe-receiving spaces and stop shoulders with which is engaged the inner end of a stove pipe when inserted into the collar, and clamping screws threaded through said collar and adapted to be screwed into engagement with the pipe whereby the latter is clamped into engagement with the recessed ends of the lugs.
