ments and has for its principal object to provide a device whereby a combined rotary and reciprocal motion may be obtained or transmitted from a driving shaft to the driven shaft.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the above specified character whlch is extremely simple and may be produced at an extremely low cost.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means for simultaneously reciprocating and rotating a pump piston rod or plunger.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pump cylinder, showing the piston geared to the driving shaft in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. i illustrates a slight modification for obtaining an interrupted rotary motion of the driven shaft; Fig.5 is a top plan view illustrating a slightly modified form of the invention; and Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line 66 of Fig. 5.
Referring in detail to the drawings 5 designates the driving shaft and 6 the driven shaft or piston to which a combined rotary and reciprocal movement is to be transmitted from the driving shaft. To this end I provide the shaft 5 with a crank 7 and to this crank at one side of its center a bev eled gear 8 is keyed or otherwise rigidly fixed. Upon the end of the shaft 6, a yoke 9.
is arranged, said yoke having a sleeve 10 integrally formed therewith to receive the end of the shaft 6. A collar 11 is fixed upon said shaft to provide a stop and prevent sliding movement of the shaft through the sleeve.
The yoke 9 is formed with one-half of a twopart box or hearing as indicated at 12, the other half or ,cap piece 13 of the bearing being removable. These bearing sections are adapted to embrace the crank 7 of the driving shaft, said shaft being rotatable between the same and providing a support for the yoke 9. To'the end of the driven shaft 6, a beveled gear 14 is keyed and meshes with the gear 8 upon the crank 7. The shaft 5 may be connectedto a motor or any other suitable source of power and as it rotates, itwill be obvious that the shaft 6 will be rotated through the medium of the co-enpenditure of power. The device is very positive and reliable in its operation.
If desired, an intermittent rotary movement of the shaft 6 may be obtained by pro viding a mutilated gear 8 upon the crank shaft to mesh with the gear 14. By having both gears of thesame diameter and provided with the same number of teeth, a complete rotation of the shaft 6 is obtained with each complete revolution of the crank shaft, and the gear 8 may be so mutilated that onehalf of the rotation of the shaft 6 will occur at each end of its reciprocal stroke. In the latter instance the gear 8 will of course be of greater diameter than the gear 14.
In Figs. 5 and 6 there is illustrated a modified form of my invention whereby the direction of rotation of the driven shaft 6 may be automatically reversed with each half revolution of the crank shaft. In this form of the'device I provide upon each end of the removable bearing sections 13, a semicircular plate 15 having a beveled or inclined face 15 for engagement by a lug 16 which is fixed in each of the gears 8 and projects from the face thereof. It will be observed from reference to Fig. 6 that the ends of 7 driven shaft 6 by means of the springs 17 which are arranged between said gears and a collar 18 fixed upon the crank. As the crank shaft rotates in the bearing of the yoke, the lug 16 carried by one of the gears 8 is brought into engagement with the face of the plate 15 at the base of the inclined face 15 thereof. As the shaft 5 continues to rotate, this lug moves upon the inclined face whereby the gear 8 is moved longitudinally upon the crank portion of the shaft 5 against the tension of the spring 17 and disengaged from the gear 14. It will be observed that the lugs 16 carried by the gears 8 are arranged in opposite relation to each other so that when one of them engages with the plate 15 on one end of the bearing at the base of its incline, the lug carried by the other gear is at the highest point of the incline and about to move off of the plate on the other end of the bearing. There is a slight movement of the gear 8 which is engaged with the gear 14, equal to substantially the depth of the gear teeth, before the lug on the other gear 8 moves off of the plate 15 and is forced into engagement with the gear 14 of the driven shaft. This auto matic movement of the gears 8 occurs when the crank of the shaft has made substantially one-half of a revolution and is disposed in a vertical position. The springs 17 which are placed under compression in the sliding movement of the gears 8 in one direction, force said gears into engagement with the gear 14 when the lugs 16 move ofi of the up per end of the inclined faces of the plates 15. In this manner the direction of rotary movement of the driven shaft 6 is automatically reversed with each half revolution of the crank shaft and at the end of each complete reciprocal movement of the driven shaft 6. Such movement might be found highly desirable and extremely useful in machines of various characters.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have devised a mechanical movement whereby combined rotary and reciprocating motion is obtained, such movement being so arranged and constructed to operate with extreme ease and reliability. Owing to the very few number of elements employed in its construction, its durability is manifest, and it will also be obvious that the device can be constructed and applied to a great many useful purposes at an extremely low cost.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is 1.- In a device of the character described, a crank shaft, a reciprocal shaft arranged at right angles to the crank shaft, and coengaged gears upon the crank of the crank shaft and the reciprocal shaft to transmit rotary movement to the latter shaft during its reciprocal movement.
2. In a device of the character described, a crank shaft, a driven shaft extending at right angles to the crank shaft, a yoke arranged upon the end of said driven shaft and engaged upon the crank of the crank shaft whereby said driven shaft is reciprocated during the rotation of the crank shaft, and means arranged upon the crank of the crank shaft and upon said driven shaft to transmit continuous rotary movement to said driven shaft during its reciprocal movement.
3. In a device of the character described, a crank shaft, a driven shaft extending at right angles to the crank shaft, a yoke on the end of said driven shaft having a sleeve to receive said shaft, a bearing arranged on said yoke, the crank of the shaft being rotatable in said bearing whereby said driven shaft is reciprocated during the rotation of the crank shaft, and co-engaged gears upon the crank shaft and the driven shaft to transmit continuous rotary movement from the crank shaft to the driven shaft during the reciprocal movement of the latter Shaft.
4. In a device of the character described, a crank shaft, a driven shaft supported at one end upon the crank of the crank shaft whereby said driven shaft is reciprocated during the rotation of the crank shaft, a gear keyed upon the crank shaft, and a gear keyed upon said driven shaft meshing with the gear on the crank shaft whereby the driven shaft is continuously rotated during its reciprocal movement simultaneously with the crank shaft.
