sacnusmrs.
Beit known that I, ELennr H. Cannon, a citizen of the United States residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improve ment in Guide-Boxes for Rolling-Mi ls, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings forming a part of the'same, in which-5- r Figure 1 is a front elevation pf a rolling mill housing provided with a guide embody'ing my invention, and F ig. 2'is a section on line 2%2, F ig. 1, on an enlarged scale.
Similar reference figures refer to similar 1 parts in the different views.
My inventionrelates to a method of supporting the guide box of a rolling mill, by which sutficient resistance to the strains of operation may be secured between the guide box and the sup orting bar, and it consists in the construc ion and arrangement of pointed out in the annexed claims. A
Referring to the accompanying drawin 1, 1, are theho'usings and 2,2, a pair of rolls journaled therein.
3 is a guide box, supported on a bar 4,
which .is attached to the front of the hous ings by bolts 5, 5, and vertically adjustable in slots 6, 6. Guide plates 7 and 8 may be used with the guide box, if desired. The
bar 4 extends acrossthe housing and is rovided with longitudinal surfaces 9 an 10 to receive the. aide box, upon which it is horizontally adJustableto bring it into alinement with the circumferentialgrooves 11 of the rolls. The guide box has at its outer end a depending flange or apron 12, which is provided with a slot 13 for the reception of a bolt 14, having a head 15 horizontally adjustable along a longitudinal T-slot 16 in the bar 4, having a central opening 17 in the upper side to allow the bolt 14 to be inserted in the slot 16.
The bearing surface 9 upon the bar 4 for the guide box 3 is located at'the inner side of the bar, and the bearing surface 10 is GUIDE-BOX FOB ROLLING-MILLS.

both si es of any possible horizontal axis of rotation. The upper surface of the guide bar 4.- is also provlded with an'undercut or dovetailed shoulder 18, to receive a corretwistin movement will be provided upon cal, and thereby provide resistance to the twisting movement ofthe guide box upon both sides of. any. possible vertical axis of rotation. The ,.c lovetailed shoulders areat an angle to the" planes of the bearing sur faces 9 and 10 ,anfd wlien the guide box is placed in position "with the dovetailed shoulders 18and 19. engagiii I each other, as shown in Fig. .2, and wit the bolt 14 inserted, the nut 20 is tightened to prevent the disengagement of the shoulders 18and 19. a
The movement of the guide box, when the nut 20 is tightened, is also ap roximately parallel with the planes of the aringsurfaces 9 and 10, so that the surfaces 9 and 10 are drawn more tightly into engagement by the movement of the guide .box, controlled by the dovetailed shoulders 18 and 19, when the nut- 20 is tightened. The bolt 14 may be made breakable under undue strain, thereby affording o portunity for the preservation of the guidb box, which is readily detached from the bar 4 moval of a single nut.
In the strains of ordinary operation, the guide box is held from liftingby the reby the resistance afforded by the dov'etailedfishoul ders 18 and 19, which, arranged at an acute angle to the vertical and extending. the
whole width of the guide box, prevent rotation about a vertical axis rand by the bearing surfaces -9 and 10 which, located at each end of the guide box and equal in length to the width of said box, prevent its rotation about any intermediate horizontal axis and also prevent the disengagement of the shoulders 18 and 19 by any strains less than the tensile strength of the bolt 14. As the surfaces 9 and 10 offer a positive resistance to the twist of the guide box as long as the dovetailed shoulders 18 and 19 are in engagement, the strain upon the bolt 14 is entirely longitudinal, all twisting strains being taken by the bearing surfaces, which enables a comparatively light apron and small J sides of said'guidebox in horizontal planes,
. bar having shoulder, a guide box having t dent.
tightening of bolt a be used,.which, while or a strength sufficient to hold the guide box under the ordinary operation of the machine, will give way when subjected to the strain of an acci- I As the flange 12 is drawn toward the bar by tightening the bolt 14,,the bearing surfaces 9 and 10 serve to support the guidebox, and the inclined shoulders 18 and 19 have a Wedging effect to draw the guide box against the surfaces 9 and 10. Pressure is, therefore, exerted" between the guide box and all three of its contacting surfaces by the a single bolt 14. I claim,
1. The combination of a. rolling inill housing, a-guide'su'pporting bar, a guide box mounted on said bar, bearing surfaces on said guide box and said bar on opposite thereby preventing the rotation of said guide box' aboutahorizontal'axis, and also bearing surfaces on said guide box and said bar in a plane at an acute angle tothevertical, thereby preventing rotation of said 3 guide box about a vertical axis.
2. The combination of a rolling mill housing,- a guide supporting bar, a guide box mounted. on said bar, horizontal bear ing' surfaces on-fsaid guide box and said bar, a longitudinal engaging shoulder at an acute angle to the vertical on said bar, a'
corresponding engagingshoulder on said guide box,.and means for moving said guide.
boxlhorizontally, thereby causing the wedging action of said shoulders and the tighter engagement of said horizontal bearing surfaces.
3. The combination 'of. a guide supporting a "corresponding shoulder arranged to vbe brought into engagement with the shoulder on said bar by a horizontal movement and to cause the approach of said guide 'boxto said bar bysaid engagement, af -bolt holdiing said shoulders incngagement, and bear i-ng surfaces between said barandsaid guide box arranged to prevent during the engagement ofsaid shoulders the rotation to said bar.
of said guide box around'any possible horizontal' axis of rotation. V
- 4. .The combination of a rolling mill housing, a guide supporting bar, a guide box mounted on said bar, said-guide box having a depending flange at its outer end, said guide bar having horizontal supporting surfaces for the lower end of said flange and the inner end of said guide box, and
means arranged horizontally and passing through said flange for detachably'attaching said guide box to said bar.
5. The combination .of -a rolling mill housing, a guide supporting bar, a guide box mounted on 'said bar, said guide box having a depending flange atits outer end, said guide bar having horizontalsupporting surfaces for the lower end of said flange and the inner end of said guide box, a'horizonta-l bolt passing, through said flange with a head inserted in a slot in said bar, and a nut upon the outer side of said guide box.
' .6. A rollingmill having aguide box with a depending flange at its outer end, a guide bar with a horizontal supporting surface for the lower' edge of said flange, a horizontals ppor ng surface for the inner end of said box, bearing surfaces at a slight angle from the vertical on said bar and guide'box, and means for impartinga horizontal movement to said guide box to bring said angular bearing surfaces into engagement by which said guide box iscaused to approach said bar.
7. A rolling mill having a guide box with a depending flange at its outer end, a guide bar having a supporting surface for the lower end of said flange, and interlocking surfaces on said guide box and said bar arranged at a slight anglefrom the vertical, whereby the horizontal movement of said guide box will draw .said guide box nearer 17th adv of June 1908.
