ELITE-BLOWER Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. '5, 1911.,
Application filed June 14, 1911. Serial No. 633,185.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. Russnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago Heights, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain ,new and useful Improvements in Flue- Blowers, of which'the following is a specification. I
My present invention relates to devices known as flue blowers for injecting steam into and through boiler. tubes in order to remove soot and other solid products of combustion from the tubes, my object being to. provide a device embodying a movable part carrying a jetting head, so constructed and-arranged'that they may be rotated and moved into, and retracted from, the rear part of the combustion chamber, by means i of thesteam.
Withthi s in mindmy invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement and operation to be hereinafter described (with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a partial vertical section a through the rear portion ,of a boiler furnace,
showing my improved deviceapplied there to. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the jet ting head carried by the moving piston, and Fig. 3 is a. transverse sectionthrough the device taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referringgnow .to these figures, A indicates the rear portion of a. boiler, showing the lines a, between which and the rear wall B of the furnace is the rear portion C of the combustion chamber, the rear wall B having a transverse bore at the Inner end of,
, bly inter-fits the inner surface of the casing collar 6, and on the inner end of which is an internal collai 8 which slidably and rotatably interfits the casing bore. 4 A cham her .9 is thus formed between the outer periphery of the piston 7 and the inner periphery of the casing 6, and extending between the collars 8 and 6 respectively thereof. Upon the opposite endor the piston T is secured the jetting head 10 which is provided with curved and radially extendin steam. openings 1], the inner ends ofwhicli openings communicate with the piston bore, and the formation of which is such that when steam is admitted within the inner steam through the head openings 11 causes rotation of said head and piston. At the same time the admission of steamcauses sliding movement of the piston with respect open end of the piston, the passage of the to the casing 6 in order to project the same within the rear portion C of the combustion chamber with its head 10 adjacent to the rear end A of the boiler. The admission of steam throughthe main pipe 5 is cont-rolled by its valve 12, this valve being opened in order to effect rotation of the piston on its longitudinal axis, when in its inner position, whereby to inject steam through each of the boiler tubes a;
Extending from the main steam pipe 5 at a point beyond its valve 12, is a branch pipe 13, which follows along the outside'of casingll and has its opposite end let into said casing adjacent to its collar 6*. Thus when the flues have been sufficiently cleaned the main steam pipe valve 1.2 is closed-and the valve 14 of the branch pipe 13 is opened in order to deliver steam into the chamber 9 around the piston 7 and against the col1ar 8 of the piston 7 whereby to slide the piston within the casing 6 until the head 10 is Within the wall cavity 3) and out of the rear portion of the combustionchamber. The pipe 13 may also be provided. with an oil cup 15 in' order to deliver a supply of oil within the casing 6 each time the piston is moved.
From the foregoing it will be readily ap parent that I accomplish. sliding and rotary movement of the piston by means which are at the same tiniesimple and of such nature as to be uni iiected by the intense heat of the I chamber, to which they are sub combustion j ected.
I claim: The combination of a tubular casing hav:
ing an internal collar adjacent to one end, a I
hollow piston slidably interfitting the said collar and extending within-the casing, said pistonbeing provided with' an open inner end and a collar surrounding the same and interfitting the. casing, an enlarged head carried by the opposite end of the pistomhaving ing provided with a valve between the 0215- 10 outlet openings extending thereth'rough and communicating with the piston bore, a fiuidpressure supply pipe coupled to the opposite end of the casing, and a branch pipe extending from said supply pipe and into the casing at a point between its collar and the said piston collar, said branch pipe being pro- Vided with a Valve and said S'upply pipe being and the said branch pipe.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses JOHN A. RUSSELL, Witnesses:
HENRY S LAUNSPAOH, ALWIL J. RAB.
