To allwhom-z't mag concern: I i Be it known that I, IRA J. HoLLENsBE, a citizen, of the United States, residing at Greensburg inthe co11nty;of;. Decatur and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Cooling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to water cooling apparatuses for cooling water supplied to the water-jackets of internal combustion en- 'gines, and the object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the above' charac-..
ter whichrcan' be easily knocked down, taken 1 apart when it is desired to clean and repair same, and can then bereadily re-assemble'd. A further object of the invention'consists in the provision ofa water cooling apparatus of the above character wherein the incoming hot water is so thoroughly distributed through the many; peculiarly shaped pipes that the correspondingly shaped columns ofwater within said pipes enables the air to extract the greatest amount-of heat therefrom'in the shortest period of time;

Referring to the drai vings, the water cooling apparatus, herein shown as used in connection with an internal combustion engine for automobile service, contemplates the use of an intermediate or central section, a base section and a top section, all of which are secured together to form an operative unit structure.

- The upper'section of the apparatus comprises an open bottom box like structure having a top 25, sides 26 and ends 27. This structure fits over the upper end of the central section and overlaps the projecting ribs 16 and is provided on its inner surface near the lower edge with the plate :30, asshown, to form the channel 31'adapted to receive gasket 33 against which the rib 16 on the plate10 bears. The upper section receives thewa'ter direct from the jackets of the engines through a suit able pipe 34. The water passes'from' the.
upper section through the pipes or tubes 15 to the. lower section during which time the largest'amount of heat is extracted from the water on account of the rectangular formation of the tubes 15 in cross section, the closeness of the side walls to each other producing thin columns of water for allowing a maximum radiation to take place. This construction enables the heat to be readily extracted from'the thin columns of water.
The lower section of the apparatus consists of an opentop rectangular box-shaped structure comprising the bottom 37, sides 38 and ends 39, This section fits over the lower end of the central section and overlaps the projecting rib 17 on the plate 11. The lower section is also provided on its inner surface near the upper edge with a plate 460, similar ,to the plate 30, and is bent to form the channel 41 adapted to form a seat for the gasket 42' The channel 41 extends entirely around thelower section enabling the rib 17 on the central section to bear against the gasket 42 in orderto seal the joint between the two sections when they occupy an assembled position. v

The lower section is also provided with the outlet pipe 60 through which the water passes from the apparatus to the water-jackets of the engines.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I desire to secure by Letters 1. A water cooling apparatus of the above comprising a plurality of independent interlocking and communicating sections, an annular groove formed in each of the upper and lower sections of the apparatus adapted to receive the edge of the adjacent section, means lying within said grooves to seal the joints between the secfrom the upper section of the apparatus to the lower section and adapted to draw all Copies of this patent may be obtained for five sections together into operative relation, means arranged within the upper and lower sections for anchoring the ends of the tiemeans, and tubes communicating with the apparatus to form a water inlet and an outlet therefor.
2. A water cooling apparatus of the above specified class comprising a plurality of independent interlocking and communicating upper, central and lower sections, the central section including a top and base plate, ribs formed along the edges of said plates, an upper section provided with an annular groove adapted to receive the rib on the adj acent edge of the central section, a lower section provided with an annular groove adapted to receive the rib on the adjacent edge of the central section, tubes arranged within the central section and communicating with the upper and lower section, tiebars extending from'the upper to the lower section, means arranged within the upper section for securing the upper ends of the bars, means arranged to secure the lower ends of the bars, and tubes communicating with the apparatus to form a water inlet and an outlet therefor.
