Be it known that LOscan A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing in- Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Machincs for Castellating Nuts, of which the following is a specification.

Abent lever 18 pivoted-on a bracket 19 has one end engaging a socket 20 on the bolt 17; and the bolt is normally retained in locking position with the head by a spring 21. A disk 22 on the shaft 10 carries a roller 23 that at one position of the rotation will engage the extremity of thelever 18 and swing it to withdraw the bolt 17 and hold it out of en gagement with the socket portions 16 of the head; which roller is positioned relative to the segment gear 14 so that the bolt is with drawn and retained until the segment gear has advanced. the hcadthe unit distance, whereupon the bolt is released and will be drawn inward by the spring 21 to engage the socket and again lock the head.
.The nuts are fed downward by suitable means and inserted into the bushings after each advance of the head; A chute 24 is shown through which the nuts are fed downward by gravity and in their lowermost position therein will be opposite one of the sockets, the socket 9 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
A slide 25 is mounted on the bed 26 of the frame to move parallel with the axis of the head and is shown as operated by a roller 27 on the slide engaged alternately by diagonal straps 28 and 29 carried by the drum SO-fast on the shaft 10, by which means the silde is reciprocated intermittently once for each revolution of the shaft 10,'th e head being advanced one-sixth of a revolution by each straps sixty of sixty degrees with onel and sixty' degrees revolution of the shaft 10. The advance of the head will bring the three uppermost sockets adjacent a fan late 53 fast on red 54 'slidable in the head that is pivoted at the rear to a lever 57 swinging on a bracket 58. The lever 57 is connected with the machine by a spring 59 and presses a roller 60 against-a cam '61 on the shaft 10.. This cam normally engages the roller to position the fan plate 53 to hold the nuts in their sockets; the plate 53 being provided with slots 62, 63 and 64, through which the cutters respectively freely pass to engage the nuts that are held by the plate in their respective sockets. Thercupon the plate is released and drawn slightly back mit indexing of the head when the p ate again engages the nuts to lock them in the sockets.
To automatically eject the nuts, when in the position 9, suitable means are provided, comprising 'p'lu'ngers '65 mounted in sockets opposite each-ofhe bushings 9 and passing thereth'rough, these lungers being engaged by springs 66 to pro1ect slightlyto the rear, but having their forwardends not extend- -for the nuts.' As each of these reaches the position of the bushing 9' it engages a cam plate- 67 fast on the frame for the'head, and is thereby advanced against the pressure of its spring to engage and eject the nut held in the'bushing. As soon as the plunger leaves this position, itis dis-' normal position by the reaction of. its spring. By this construction it will be seen that the nuts are automatically fed from the chute into the, bushings. of the head, and when the head is advanced the bushing is carried upward, and the nut is engaged by the fan plate as soon as the head is again, arrested. In this position the nut has the first diagonal slot cut therein. During this operation the next nut is advanced into its bushing.
