Description
ROBERT H. PUFF, 0F ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
:BARREL-EASTENING.
VSpecification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 27, 17911. Serial No..651,654.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT I-I. PUFF., 2L citizen of the United States, residing at 3009 Victor street, St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Barrel-Fastening; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a barrel, and especially to a new and useful lid, cover or closure for one end only of the barrel, in order to take the place of the old style heading. It is to be understood, however, that both ends of the barrel may be similarly closed.
The invention in its broadest scope aims as its primary object to provide a device of this nature, which may be easily and quickly applied, and readily opened.
A feature of the invention is the fact that no hoops or strips, as well as nailing is to be used for holding the cover in place, thus saving considerable time and labor.
A further object of the invention is to provide a barrel, in which the hoops between the ends of the barrel remain at all times undisturbed, which not only retains the strength, but also prolongs the use of the barrel, thus enabling it to be reshipped in good condition.
A further object of the invention is the eliminating the old custom of jamming in the head or cover, and removing the hoops, thereby loosening the staves, and consequently weakening the barrel.
In the drawings there is disclosed a certain construction of closure, but in practical fields this structure may necessitate alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barrel having the improved cover or closure applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through one end of the barrel, showing the cover or closure applied. Fig. 3 is a plan view partly in section of the two parts of the cover or closure. Fig. 4L is a detail view of one of the bolts for holding the cover or closure in place.
Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates a barrel of the usual construction, with the exception that the chimes of the staves are eliminated.
Passing through the staves of the barrel, and arranged opposite one another are angular bolts 2, there being washers 3 and nuts 4, for securing the bolts rigidly in position. Arranged on the upturned portions 5 of the bolts are washers 6. These washers 6 are threaded on the portions 5 in order to support the cover or closure 7. The upturned portions 5 of the bolt pass through the openings 8 of the cover or closure 7. The cover or closure 7 is removable or applicable to the barrel in two sections 9. Each section is constructed of two pieces of wood 10, of the shape shown in Fig. 3. The two pieces of wood of each section are securedtogether by the wire rods 11 having the heads 12. When the two sections of the cover or closure are in place in the end of the barrel, the projecting ends of the wire rods penetrate the barrel staves. The projecting ends are designated by the character 13. The cover or closure rest upon the washers 6, that is, when the cover is arranged in the end of the barrel. Vhen the cover is thus arranged the washers 14 are subsequently on the portions 5 of the bolt, after which the nuts 15 are screwed on, thus securely holding the closure or cover in place. The upper extremities of the portions 5 of the bolts are provided with eyes 16, to receive a wire or the like as shown at 17 with a seal 18, to lock the barrel. The seal, however, is for the purpose of indicating whether or not the cover or closure has been tampered with.
n The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a barrel, a'closure therefor, bolts arranged oppositely at one end of the barrel having upturned portions, washers on the portions to support the closure, and means threaded on the portions to clamp the closure against the washers.
2. In a barrel, a sectional closure, means carried by the barrel for supporting and holding two opposite sides of the closure, wire rods penetrating the sections at right angles to the means and having their projecting ends penetrating the barrel, for supporting two other opposite sides of th closure.
Patented Nov. 28, 1911.
3. In a barrel, a sectional closure, each section comprising two pieces, means carried by the barrel for supporting and holding two opposite sides of the closure, wire headed rods penetrating the two pieces of each section and arranged at right angles to the means and having their projecting ends penetrating the barrel staves,v for sup- .porting two other opposite sides of the closure at right angles to the first opposite 10 sides.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
