MOLD FOR ARTIFICIAL ICE.
Application filed May 2, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD N. BREITUNG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Marquette, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Mold for Artificial Ice, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to ice molds, my more particular purpose being to provide an ice mold having double walls and so shaped that when ice is formed within the mold, it may be readily loosened, and thus removed, by pouring hot water into a predetermined part of the mold.
More particularly stated, I provide a mold having generally the form of a cone frustum and provided with inner and outer walls spaced apart and so arranged that hot water may be readily poured in between the-walls.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, showing my improved mold complete; Fig. 2 is a substantially central vertical section through the same; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the li ne H of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow,
An inner wall 5 and an outer wall 6 made of sheet metal and each having generally the form of a cone frustum, are surmounted by a top plate 7 having generally the form of a disk and provided with a reduced portion 8 and with an annular shoulder 9 bounding said reduced portion. The top plate 7 is provided with a substantially central opening 10. The upper edge of the wall 5 is provided'with a thickened annular portion 11 which fits neatly around the reduced portion 8 of the top plate 7, and also fits against the shoulder 9. The metallic inner and outer walls 5, 6 are each beveled slightly at 12 so that their edges reach to the same imaginary plane-that is, they come out fiush with each other. Spacing blocks 13, 14:, 15 each of a general arcuate form, are disposed between the inner and outer walls 5, 6, the spacing blocks 1 1, 15 being beveled slightly. moldis then filled with water and subjected to intense .cold. The water is thus frozen into ice. In order to loosen and remove the ice in the form of a solid cake, the eye 16 is grasped by the fingers, the mold is inverted, and hot water is poured through the holes 18. It finds its way downwardly between the walls 5, 6 and thus heats the entire metallic surface engaging the cake of ice, the heat reaching to the outermost edges of the portion of larger diameter of the ice cake. The water readily makes its escape between the lowermost spacing blocks 14.
I do not limit myself to the precise construction shown, nor to the use of the mold merely for removing ice. The construction and operation of the device may be varied within reasonable limits, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In an ice mold, the combination of an inner wall made of metal and having substantially a frusto-conical form, an outer wall made likewise of metal and having a frusto-conical form, spacing blocks disposed between said inner wall and said'outer wall,
a top plate having a reduced portion engaging said inner. wall and having a shoulder in engagement with said outer wall, said top plate having holes which merge into the space between said inner wall and said outer wall.
2. In a mold for artificial ice, the combination of an inner wall made of metal and having a substantially frusto-conical form, said inner wall at its end of smaller diameter having a thickened annular portion, an outer wall made of metal and disposed concentric to said inner wall, spacing blocks disposed between said inner wall and said outer wall, said spacing blocks each having a substantially arcuate form, a top plate provided with a reduced circular portion engaging said thickened portion of said inner wall, said top plate being further provided with a shoulder engaging both 7 said thickened annular portion of said inner and said outer wall and provided with holes erg ng i t t e pace b t n s d inn r al and sa out r w l an an, ye p vided with a stem extending through said. p p a e and, s r ng s a hand e f r lifting the entire device.
